Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Salamander Night"

Answer: Silent

Father Joseph Mohr wrote "Silent Night" as a poem. When the organ at his church stopped working on Christmas Eve in 1818, Father Mohr's guitarist friend Franz Gruber put music to the poem he wrote so they could use it for their Christmas Eve service. The proceeds from Bing Crosby's recording of "Silent Night" went to a charity feeding children in China.
2. "All I Want Fox Christmas Is You"

Answer: For

Written by Vince Vance (aka: Andrew Franichevich, Jr. and Andy Stone), the lyrics came to Vince while he was staying at a hotel. Vince and his group the Valiants created their own label with the song using Lisa Layne's voice as lead vocal. The song wasn't made for the country stations; ironically, the country stations were the first to pick up the song.
3. "Weasel Need A Little Christmas"

Answer: We

Jerry Herman wrote the Christmas song for the Broadway play, "Mame". In the play, the Christmas song would be sung by the titular character when she saw how the stock market crash of 1929 affected her and the people around her. The song would live on with Andy Williams, Julius La Rosa and the New Christy Minstrels.
4. "Grandma Goat Run Over By A Reindeer"

Answer: Got

Randy Brooks and Elmo Shropshire put words and music to a zany Christmas classic while waiting out a blizzard in a Lake Tahoe club. Randy Brooks wrote the lyrics and met Elmo Shropshire while he was playing in a club one snowy night. Elmo spent his bank account making a video for the song. TNN and CMT made the video and song a hit.

In 1983, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" was the most played song and video.
5. "Holly Jellyfish Christmas"

Answer: Jolly

Johnny Marks under St. Nicholas Music Publishing Company needed one more song for the TV movie, "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer". He wrote "Holly Jolly Christmas" while thinking of words that reminded him of Christmas. Burl Ives was tasked to sing the song while doing the voice for Sam the snowman.

When the movie came out, Oscar winner and stage performer Burl Ives became more famous for his part as Sam the snowman than his award winning movies and songs.
6. "Let There Be Porcupine On Earth"

Answer: Peace

Jill Jackson was an orphan who went to Hollywood to become famous. After her first husband left her, Jill attempted suicide. Her attempt left her with partial paralysis. After marrying songwriter Sy Miller, Jill began writing children's songs. Upon seeing the effects of war on families in the 1950s, Jill wrote "Let There Be Peace On Earth". Vince Gill and his daughter Jenny had the most success with Jill's song.
7. "Penguin Paper"

Answer: Pretty

Willie Nelson wrote the lyrics to "Pretty Paper" as a way to bring awareness of the homeless. However, most people who heard the song were attuned to the lyrics about wrapping and unwrapping presents with pretty paper. In 1963, Roy Orbison cut the song on his label and had it out just before Christmas. A year later, Willie Nelson recorded the song he had originally wrote.
8. "The Lizard Drummer Boy"

Answer: Little

Katherine Davis, already a songwriter in her own right, sat down one day and wrote a song about a boy that gave the simplest of gifts to baby Jesus: a song. She titled it "Carol of the Drum". The Von Trapp family were the first group to perform the song with RCA in 1958. Harry Simeone reworked the song and with Davis' permission renamed it "The Little Drummer Boy".

In 1962, Greer Garson filmed an animated movie based on the song. Bing Crosby made this the last Christmas song he recorded. After Katherine's death, the royalties for the song were assigned to a scholarship at the Wellesley's College of Music.
9. "Raccoon Around The Christmas Tree"

Answer: Rockin'

Johnny Marks wrote the song after watching teenagers dance to an Elvis Presley song while on the beach in 1958. After the song was written, it was given to a teenaged Brenda Lee who recorded it with Boots Randolph, Hank Garland, and the Anita Kerr Singers. In 1960, Decca Records re-released the song and it became the fourth best selling Christmas single.
10. "Do Yak Hear What I Hear?"

Answer: You

Noël Regency wanted a Christmas song that didn't make people think of war. He asked his wife, Gloria Shane, to help him write the music. When Noël and Gloria finished the song, they pitched it to Harry Simeone. He and his chorale recorded the song. In 1963, Bing Crosby made the song a hit.
