Born Robert Ritchie on January 17, 1971, in Romeo, Michigan. He realized when he was a small boy that he wanted to be in the music industry, but just how he would accomplish this, he had no idea. Although he received poor grades in his normal academic subjects, the one class that he excelled in was music.

He tried to emulate his music idols Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank Williams, Jr. He hired himself out as a disc jockey for parties, weddings, and local school dances. By the time he was sixteen, he gained recognition as the best disc jockey in his hometown.

At one of the dance parties that he worked at, one of the chaperones said "Boy that kid rocks." He liked the sound of Kid rocks, and decided that is what he wanted to be called. So he dropped the letter 's' off of the word 'rocks', and the rest as they say is history. Kid Rock was on his way to becoming one of the fastest growing music legends of his time.

The grand prize was a $100,000 recording contract with Jive Records, and he became the opening act for the group Boogie Down Productions.
