Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please fill in the missing word from the title of the first King Crimson album: "In the _____ of the Crimson King"

Answer: court

The full title of the album is "In the Court of the Crimson King an Observation by King Crimson". This is the first studio album by King Crimson, released in 1969. The lineup consisted of Robert Fripp (guitar), Ian McDonald (reeds, woodwind, vibes, keyboards, mellotron, vocals), Greg Lake (bass guitar, lead vocals), Michael Giles (drums, percussion, vocals), and Peter Sinfield (words and illumination). All this taken from the liner notes of the 2004 original master edition cd. Here is an excerpt of the title track "The Court of the Crimson King" containing the title:

"On soft grey mornings widows cry,
The wise men share a joke;
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax.
The yellow jester does not play
But gently pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the crimson king."
2. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this classic Yes album: "Close to the _____"

Answer: edge

The lineup on this record consisted of Jon Anderson (vocals), Bill Bruford (drums), Rick Wakeman (Keyboards), Steve Howe (guitar), and Chris Squire (bass). The album itself from 1972 consists of only three tracks: "Close to the Edge", "And You and I", and "Siberian Khatru".

The track "Close to the Edge" takes up an entire album side, but has been performed live on many occasions. You can find live versions of it on "Yessongs" (1973), "An Evening of Yes Music Plus" (1994), and "Keys to Ascension 2" (1997). Note that "An Evening of Yes Music Plus" is Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe, so it's actually not Yes.
3. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this Jethro Tull album: "Songs from the _____"

Answer: wood

The album "Songs from the Wood" came out in 1977. Lead singer Ian Anderson in the liner notes of the 2003 remastered cd talks about the characterization of the album as "folk-rock":

"Really, it just seemed a natural progression from the previous albums and, while inspired by folk tales, it in no way took on the true folk credentials of the Fairports, Steeleye Span and the other stalwarts of the Traditional Folk scene of the seventies. More a case of folky window dressing in a prog-rock shop-front. But, all in all, one of the best ever Tull albums in my opinion."
4. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this Peter Gabriel era Genesis album: "Selling _____ by the Pound"

Answer: england

Released in 1973, this is the second to last Genesis album that contains Peter Gabriel on vocals. This album contains two of their longest tracks - "The Battle of Epping Forest" and "The Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty". Both are over eleven minutes long. The track "More Fool Me" has Phil Collins on vocals. The album title appears in the lyrics of the first track "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight":

"'Paper late!' cried a voice in the crowd.
'Old man dies!' The note he left was signed
'Old Father Thames' - it seems he's drowned;
selling England by the pound."

The book that comes with the Genesis boxset "1976-1982" says that the song "Paperlate" took its title from this lyric. From the book (notes by Michael Watts):

"'Paperlate!' then became a phrase Collins used at soundchecks to test the reverb: 'I used to repeat the phrase over and over, and then one day the band joined in.'"
5. Please fill in the missing word from this live Emerson, Lake and Palmer album: "Pictures at an _____"

Answer: exhibition

This is a live recording from 1972. The first eleven tracks are "Pictures at an Exhibition", followed by "Nutrocker". The album is based on Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition". The band would in the nineties record a much shorter studio version (approximately fifteen and a half minutes) for their "Return of the Manticore" boxset.
6. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this Pink Floyd album: "A Mometary Lapse of _____"

Answer: reason

This was the first Pink Floyd studio album without Roger Waters. It was released in 1987. The album title appears in the lyrics of the song "One Slip":

"One slip, and down the hole we fall,
It seems to take no time at all
A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life for life
A small regret, you won't forget
There'll be no sleep in here tonight"

As of 2008, this is the second to the last Pink Floyd studio album released, the last being "The Division Bell".
7. Please fill in the missing word from the title of the following Dream Theater CD: "Systematic _____"

Answer: chaos

This album was released in 2007. The track "Repentance" lists the following as "special guest voices": Mikael Akerfeldt, Jon Anderson, David Ellefson, Daniel Gildenlow, Steve Hogarth, Chris Jericho, Neal Morse, Joe Satriani, Corey Taylor, Steve Vai and Steven Wilson.
8. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this album by Marillion that has lead vocals by Fish: "Misplaced _____"

Answer: childhood

The album was released in 1985 and is known for the tracks "Kayleigh" and "Lavender". This album has Fish on lead vocals. The title itself appears in the lyrics of the track "Blind Curve":

"Perimeter walk.
There's a presence here.
I feel could have been ancient,
I could have been mystical.

There's a presence,
A child, my child
My childhood, misplaced childhood,
Give it back to me, give it back to me.
A childhood, the childhood,
Oh please give it back to me."
9. Please fill in the missing word from the album title of this Spock's Beard CD: "Beware of _____" As a hint, the title is the name of a song that appears on a solo Beatle's album from 1970.

Answer: darkness

This CD is from 1996. It consists of seven tracks, including "thoughts", "waste away", and "time has come". All tracks are written by Neal Morse except the title track, which is a George Harrison song that appears on "All Things Must Pass". Here are some of the lyrics from the title track:

"Watch out now take care beware
of thoughts that linger
winding 'round inside your head
and the pain that often lingers
in the dead of night
in the dead of night
beware of darkness"

The cover version differs from the original in many respects - the instruments, Neal Morse's vocals, and it is longer (about five and a half minutes). In my opinion, it's a good cover, but I'm very biased since I love the George Harrison version.
10. Please fill in the missing word from the title of this Porcupine Tree CD: "The _____ Moves Sideways"

Answer: sky

The 2004 2 disk remastered version of this album contains a continuous thirty-four and a half minute version of "The Sky Moves Sideways" on the second disk, along with the tracks "Stars Die" and "Moonloop". From the liner notes to this edition: "Througout most of the recording sessions for The Sky Moves Sideways the plan was that the album would contain only the title track as one 50 minute long piece of music. A version of this length was never completed, but the alternate version here is a work in progress mix that contains some music that was eventually cut from the final album, as well as an earlier set of lyrics."
