Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first record label that Rick recorded for?

Answer: Verve

Rick's first single, "I'm Walkin" was backed with "A Teenagers Romance." His second single, "You're My One and Only Love" was backed with an instrumental called "Honey Rock" by another Verve artist. These were Rick's only recordings on the Verve label. Rick's dad, Ozzie, signed Rick to Imperial where Rick remained through 1962.
2. In 1958, Rick had his first #1 record. Which one is it?

Answer: Poor Little Fool

This song was written by the late Sharon Sheeley who wrote this lament about the very married Don Everly (Everly Brothers) with whom she was having an affair. It has been said that Rick was reluctant to record the song but boy, I am glad that he did.
3. Which song did Johnny Cash pen for Rick to sing in the film "Rio Bravo?" (The song never made it into the movie)

Answer: Restless Kid

Though the song did not make it into the film because of the singing talents of Dean Martin, Rick did record the song and it appears on "Ricky Sings Again."
4. Who penned, "It's Up To You?"

Answer: Jerry Fuller

Rick recorded many of Jerry Fuller's songs, including the million seller, "Travelin' Man." Later, in the mid-sixties, more of Fuller's songs appeared on the Top 40 Charts as recorded by Gary Puckett and The Union Gap.
5. From which song do these lyrics come from, "Throw a nickel in the jukebox, then we start to rock?"

Answer: Waitin' In School

This is just one of Rick's songs quoted in the Brad Pitt film, "Johnny Suede."
6. Who wrote, "Don't Leave Me This Way?"

Answer: Ricky Nelson

This is Rick's first original penned song that he recorded. He would not record his own material again until the late 1960's.
7. Two huge hits came of the LP, "Rick Is 21." One of those hits was "Travelin' Man." Which is the other?

Answer: Hello Mary Lou

The record released with "Travelin Man'" as the A side became a two-sided smash with the success of "Hello Mary Lou" one of the most creative recordings of the day.
8. Who wrote, "Today's Teardrops?"

Answer: Gene Pitney

Pitney's, "Hello Mary Lou" was such a success he and Nelson followed it up with "Today's Teardrops" on Rick's next LP, "Album Seven." It peaked at #27 on the charts.
9. Which album featured the hit, "Lonesome Town?"

Answer: Ricky Sings Again

Baker Knight, sulking poolside because a film deal fell through, penned "Lonesome Town."

Answer: #5

"Teenage Idol," a term Nelson never really wanted attached to him, peaked at #5 in the summer of 1962.
