Question 1 of 10
1. A singer/songwriter who grew up in Berkley, this Michigander has written and performed music for more than 30 years. He got his first big break playing John Lennon in a stage production of "Beatlemania", and he played Buddy Holly in the 1987 film "La Bamba. He's been looking for a "Cynical Girl", and has released many noteworthy songs, including "Whenever You're on My Mind" and "You're My Favorite Waste of Time". Can you name this performer of "Someday, Someway"? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. A Detroit native, this "Queen of Motown" recorded numerous singles for the legendary Detroit label. Her signature song was "My Guy", but her other hits included "Two Lovers" and "You Beat Me to the Punch." What's her name? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. A husband and wife founded this group from Detroit, though for years this duo claimed that they were brother and sister. If you've ever attended a sporting event in the U.S., you've probably heard their anthem, "Seven Nation Army" -- can you name the band? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The pride of Flint, Michigan, this band was enormously popular nationally during the early seventies. They told us that "We're an American Band" and begged us to do "The Loco-Motion". Sure, claiming that they were "Some Kind of Wonderful" may have been overstating it a bit, but it was fun while it lasted. What is the name of this group? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. One of the biggest Motown groups, these Detroiters had numerous hit singles in the sixties. Fronted by lead vocalist Levi Stubbs, some of their most popular songs include "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)", "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Standing in the Shadows of Love", and "Bernadette". Can you name this group that on more than one occasion made it to the "Top" of the charts? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This band's debut album reached number one in the pop charts in 1979, but they were unable to follow that album up with much in the way of commercial success. Yes, they claimed that "Good Girls Don't", and yes, they were "Frustrated", but they were able to parlay that sexual angst into (short-lived) rock stardom. Lead singer, Doug Fieger, from Oak Park, Michigan was inspired by his relationship with his girlfriend, Sharona Alperin, when he wrote the lyrics of their first hit single -- do you remember the name of his band? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Known in recent times more for his pro-hunting advocacy and his right wing politics, this Detroiter was a founding member of the Amboy Dukes, as well as a popular solo recording artist in the seventies and eighties. If you've ever had "Cat Scratch Fever", or tried to "Wango Tango", you probably remember his guitar playing, but can you give me his name? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The original singer of the hit "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher", this Detroit singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and was ranked Number 69 in "Rolling Stone" magazine's list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. While on stage singing another one of his big hits, "Lonely Teardrops", he collapsed on stage with a heart attack -- and the world never saw him perform again. Can you name this legendary musical artist? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. This band was formed by guitarist Jimmy McCarty and drummer Johnny "Bee" Badanjek, two alumni of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. They told their audience to "Turn Up The Radio" in 1979, and they released an album in 1980 that had "No Ballads." Even though they failed to sustain national musical prominence, Detroiters continued to have a "Desire" to hear them play. If I tell you that they also covered Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well", would you be able to name this group? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. I'm going to make the last question a little more difficult, if you're up for a challenge. This former resident of Detroit is one of the greatest bass players of the rock and roll era, yet very few people have heard of him. He moved to the Motor City while in high school, and eventually became a member of the "Funk Brothers", which was a group of session musicians that played on all of the Motown hits of the sixties. He played on on "nearly 30 number one pop hits" (according to a story in the Detroit Free Press), and if you have seen the movie "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown," you understand the awe that his fellow brothers felt about him. Do you know his name? Hint

He's been looking for a "Cynical Girl", and has released many noteworthy songs, including "Whenever You're on My Mind" and "You're My Favorite Waste of Time". Answer: Marshall Crenshaw

Marshall Crenshaw also co-wrote the song "Til I Hear It from You," which was released by the Gin Blossoms.
2. A Detroit native, this "Queen of Motown" recorded numerous singles for the legendary Detroit label. Her signature song was "My Guy", but her other hits included "Two Lovers" and "You Beat Me to the Punch." What's her name?

Answer: Mary Wells

"My Guy", the most popular song that Mary Wells sang, was written by Smokey Robinson in 1964. Later that year, he also wrote The Temptations classic "My Girl".
3. A husband and wife founded this group from Detroit, though for years this duo claimed that they were brother and sister. If you've ever attended a sporting event in the U.S., you've probably heard their anthem, "Seven Nation Army" -- can you name the band?

Answer: The White Stripes

Jack White was ranked by "Rolling Stone" magazine Number 70 in their 2010 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time." He and drummer Meg White divorced in 2000.

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

Cartoon rock critic Homer Simpson is a huge fan of Grand Funk Railroad -- in "The Simpsons" episode entitled "Homerpalooza", Homer expressed outrage that his kids, Bart and Lisa, didn't know about GFR. He exclaimed, "You kids don't know Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drumwork of Don Brewer? Oh, man!"

Answer: The Four Tops

The Four Tops performed together for more than forty years without any changes in personnel. Levi Stubbs voiced the alien plant Audrey II in the movie "Little Shop of Horrors".

Answer: The Knack

Doug Fieger's brother, Geoffrey Fieger, is a Detroit area based attorney who is most famous for representing Jack Kevorkian and being the Democratic Party's gubernatorial candidate in 1998.

Answer: Ted Nugent

While I'm not a big fan of either his music or his politics, there's no denying that Ted Nugent has had a knack for keeping himself relevant to a large segment of the American public. Even though he has consistently stated his anti-drug views, its interesting to note that his first big song with the Amboy Dukes was "Journey to the Center of the Mind" -- a song about drug use that was written by another member of the band.

Answer: Jackie Wilson

In 1985, the Commodores recorded the song "Nightshift", which was a tribute to Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, who had both died the previous year. Three years after Wilson's death, a fundraiser was held to raise funds for a headstone to be placed by his then unmarked grave.

Answer: The Rockets

The Rockets broke up in 1983, though in 2010 they played a couple of reunion shows, and in 2013 they released a four song EP, "Greetings From Detroit."

Answer: James Jamerson

James Jamerson died in 1983 at the age of 47, just months after the broadcast of the NBC special "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". This reunion celebrated Motown's illustrious past, and performers such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and The Supremes were all honored for their achievements. Yet Jamerson, like his fellow Funk Brothers, was not even mentioned in the show, even though they created the ACTUAL MUSIC that was played behind these great Motown vocalists.

In 2000, he was received some of the recognition that he long deserved when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
