Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Since their formation in 1998, Rupam Islam and Deep Ghosh have been the driving forces behind which Indian rock band?

Answer: Fossils

Fossils have been at the cutting edge of the growing Bangla rock movement since it started, and continue to release great rock music as well as putting on brilliant live shows.
Bangla rock is the term given to bands that combine Bangladeshi classical music with British or American rock influences. For a good example, check out the live version of "Ekla Ghar"(2002) from Fossil's first self titled album.
2. Formed in 1980, Armando and Carlos de Castro have been the constant members of which Spanish metal band who, in 1985, had a young band called Metallica as support on several gigs?

Answer: Baron Rojo

The importance of Baron Rojo (Red Baron) on the Spanish rock and metal scene can not be underestimated. Success came quickly after forming in 1980, with the band being invited to use Ian Gillan's London studio to record their second album, "Volumen Brutal" (1982). During the recording of this album, they also worked for the first time with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and the same year, they played the Reading festival in UK, along with Twisted Sister, Marillion and Iron Maiden.
Unfortunately, as is often the case, success brings its own dangers and by 1989, the band had imploded, leaving just the De Castro brothers, who to their credit have carried on with a variety of musicians, but never quite recreating the original raw sound the band had.
What of that young support act, Metallica? Well they went on to become global superstars but have never forgotten the debt they owe to Baron Rojo, often playing Rojo tracks at gigs, with an especially fine version of "Los Rockeros van al Infierno" from "Volumen Brutal" (1982) being a firm fan favourite.
3. Hei Bao are one of the finest Chinese rock bands and have been around since 1987. How does their name translate into English?

Answer: Black Panther

Black Panther, not surprisingly for a band that has been around for over 30 year, have undergone a few line up changes, but through it all, guitarist Li Tong and bass player Wang Wenjie have been the rock at the heart of their rock music.
"Shameful" (1992) is one of the band's best known releases outside China and has drawn comparisons with Judas Priest, while the rock ballad, "Don't Break My Heart" (1992) is also fairly well known.
4. "Dalmacijo" (2007) is the much loved run out song of Croatian football club, Hajduk Split. Which great Croatian band recorded this track?

Answer: Tutti Frutti

"Dalmacijo" (2007) translates as Dalmatia, and as Split is largest city in the Dalmatia region of Croatia, the song was a perfect choice for the football club to adopt.
The band is also well known for tracks such as "Ne Bojim Se Drugova Tvoga Frajera" (I'm Not Afraid Of Your Boyfriend's Pals) (1987) and "Stvari Lagane" (Easy Things) (1988).
Tutti Frutti disbanded in 1996, but reformed in 2010 and released a new album "Pivo i tekila" (Beer And Tequila).
5. Which German rock band released their first album in 1972 but had to wait until 1992 for an album to make the top ten on the Billboard 200 in USA?

Answer: Scorpions

Quite possibly the best known band in this quiz, Scorpions have been around since 1965 when they were formed by Rudolf Schenker.
Despite amassing a legion of fans over the decades, the band has never really had the success or recognition that they deserve.
They had to wait a quarter century for their first number one on the album chart in their homeland, which was "Crazy World" (1990) and it wasn't until 1991, when ballad, "Wind Of Change" became a hit, that they achieved success on the singles chart of many countries.
Forget about this power ballad for a moment and remember some of the great rock tracks from the band instead, such as the live version of "We'll Burn The Sky" from 1978, "Dynamite" (1982) and of course 1984s "Rock You Like A Hurricane".
6. Jasper Steverlinck is a successful Belgian artist, having had a number one on the country's Flemish chart. He has also, since 1995 been vocalist for which alternative rock band?

Answer: Arid

Steverlinck topped the Flemish chart in Belgium in 2003 with a cover of David Bowie's hit "Life On Mars" and also had a solo top ten hit with "Here's To Love" in 2017.
With Arid, he has had singles chart success with "Seven Odd Years" (2010) which reached the top ten, but it their albums where the band has been most successful.
Debut album, "Little Things Of Venom" (1999) was a top 20 hit, while the follow up, "All Is Quiet Now" (2002) reached the top three and later releases such as "Under The Cold Street Lights" (2010) reached the top five.
Arid have toured Europe as support band for UK indie rockers Suede, as well as for American band, Counting Crows, building up a strong fan base in doing so.
7. Which Russian folk rock band, formed in 1972 has experimented with reggae, punk and indie through the years, but always with Boris Grebenshchikov at the helm?

Answer: Aquarium

Boris Grebenshchikov, often called "BG" and usually referred to as the 'Grandfather of Russian Rock' has been a huge force in Russian rock, yet is largely unknown outside his homeland. That almost changed for him when Michael Apted directed the movie, "The Long Way Home" in 1989. This was a documentary about BG, and released to coincide with / promote his first English language album, "Radio Silence".
The lead single, also titled "Radio Silence" was a hit outside Russia, hitting number seven on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Chart in USA but the film largely sank without trace.
For BG and Aquarium at their best Dylan-esque Russian, take a listen to tracks such as "Train On Fire" (1987).
8. Which Japanese rock band have a long history, releasing their first album, "Moon Gold" back in 1991 and having their biggest success on the Japan Hot 100 in 2009 with "Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi"?

Answer: The Pillows

"Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi" (2009) reached number four on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and was the only single released from the band's 16th album, "OOPArts" (2009), which was a top ten album in their homeland.
Band members, Sawao Yamanaka, Yoshiaki Manabe and Shinichiro Sato have all been with the band since they formed in 1989, and The Pillows are well known in Japan for their logo, Buster-kun, who first appeared in 1998 and is described as a kind of cute but kind of scary, grotesque, creepy-looking teddy bear.
Just in case you were wondering, "Ameagari ni mita Maboroshi" translates as "Hybrid Rainbow After The Rain".
9. Which Italian prog rock band formed in 1972 and are best known for their soundtrack work, including that for George A. Romero's 1978 film, "Dawn Of The Dead"?

Answer: Goblin

Goblin are well known for their movie soundtrack work, especially on horror movies, which include "Suspiria" (1977), "Patrick" (1978), "Contamination" (1980)and "Phenomena" (1985) as well as the afore mentioned "Dawn Of The Dead" (1978).
The band have undergone several incarnations since forming in 1975 and past members now front several bands including Goblin, Goblin Rebirth, Claudio Simonetti's Goblin and Cherry Five, which was also the original name of the band.
10. Which Dutch band had a Canadian number one hit in 1981 with "Sausalito Summernight"?

Answer: Diesel

"Sausalito Summernight" was Diesel's only Canadian hit and the track also reached number 25 in USA on the Billboard Hot 100, giving them their only top 100 track there.
In their native Netherlands, the band had hits with "Sausalito Summernight" (1981) as well as "Down In The Silvermine" (1980) and "Samantha" (1988). "Samantha" was their first comeback track after disbanding in 1985, and although the band broke up again shortly after, they continue to reform at sporadic intervals.
