Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Listen as the wind blows from across the great divide."

Answer: Possession

Though Sarah McLachlan's music career commenced in the late 1980s she never hit her stride in here home country of Canada until, at the very least, the release of her third full album, "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy", in 1993. The album would go five times platinum in Canada (and three times platinum in the U.S.), mostly based off the popularity of the preceding record. "Possession" is perhaps the most lasting track from the album. Said to be about the terrifying letters from fans and stalkers she received after her second album, it would appear on five different Billboard charts in the U.S., peaking at number four on the Billboard Alternative Airplay Chart over the course of four years.
2. "The life I've left behind me is a cold room."

Answer: Sweet Surrender

Though "Building a Mystery" kicked off McLachlan's "Surfacing" album, "Sweet Surrender" was the track that reaped the benefits of her hit. Though it didn't top the charts, the track hit number two on both the Canada Top Singles and Canada Adult Contemporary charts (it hit number three, as well, on the Canada Rock/Alternative chart) and appeared on seven different Billboard charts in the U.S. over a span of five years.

It would have been six, but the track received a dance remix that brought it back to a new audience in 2001.
3. "It's a long way down to the place where we started from."

Answer: Ice Cream

Though Sarah McLachlan included "Ice Cream" as a track on her third album, "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy", it never gained its popularity until 1999 when it was pushed as a single from her live album, "Mirrorball", and this popularity didn't extend too far beyond her home country. Though the album's top single, "I Will Remember You", would top the Canada Adult Contemporary chart, "Ice Cream" would hit number twelve. "Mirrorball" would go three times platinum in the U.S. and five times platinum in Canada.
4. "You live in a church where you sleep with voodoo dolls."

Answer: Building a Mystery

"Building a Mystery" was a colossal hit for McLachlan, appearing on contemporary radio for several years in the mid-to-late-1990s. It topped three Canadian charts and the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart in the U.S. between 1997 and 1998 (it would get number thirteen on the Hot 100).

The track was one of a handful that made her fourth album, "Surfacing", a major success at both the Juno Awards in Canada and the Grammys; she would win the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1998.
5. "...you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see."

Answer: Stupid

The second single to come from the "Afterglow" album, "Stupid" was a popular track in Canada, appearing on several national charts (topping out at number two on the Canada Hot AC Top 30) and receiving more radio play than the alternatives from this disc.

It helped McLachlan's album top the Billboard Canadian Albums chart altogether in 2003 and 2004; it would reach number two on the Billboard 200 in the U.S.
6. "You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie."

Answer: Angel

Perhaps the most enduring of McLachlan's songs, "Angel" is known for placing McLachlan's mournful vocals over little more than piano and stand-up bass. It was the fourth and final single to release from "Surfacing" and it's appeared on radio charts all the way through to the mid-2010s. "Angel" topped three Billboard charts in the U.S. and peaked at number four on the Hot 100 (only "Adia" would top it at number three earlier in 1998). Famously, the song featured heavily in commercials for pet adoption through the ASPCA, a cause in which McLachlan was heavily invested.
7. "It's funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word."

Answer: I Will Remember You

Originally written for the soundtrack of the Edward Burns film "The Brothers McMullen", McLachlan featured the song as a part of her first B-sides album, "Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff", in 1996. It would gain new life when it was rereleased in 1999 as a single from McLachlan's live album "Mirrorball".

The track that would win her a second Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The "Mirrorball" album would reach number three on the US Billboard 200 chart and number two on the Billboard chart in Canada; the song would go on to appear on four singles charts in the U.S.
8. "I got caught up in all there was to offer."

Answer: Fallen

The first single from McLachlan's fifth album, "Afterglow", "Fallen" was a return to form for the singer/songwriter, allowing her to showcase her distinctive vocals with a backdrop of sweeping strings and the typical band elements. The track allowed McLachlan to receive another Grammy nomination (for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance), her fourth, and it would appear on five Billboard charts (including the dance charts courtesy of the remixes that followed).

It would be her only single from the album to show on the Hot 100.
9. "'Cause we are born innocent."

Answer: Adia

Hitting number three on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Adia" was a popular down-tempo track for McLachlan and her third single from "Surfacing". Hitting the radio in early 1998, it would be her top-charting release south of the Canadian border and likely would have been a second consecutive Grammy for McLachlan if not for the release of Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On".
10. "Stay close to me while the sky is falling."

Answer: World on Fire

"World on Fire" was another classic McLachlan track from "Afterglow", and it was another opportunity for the musician to give back. The director of her music video, Sophie Muller (who also did her videos for "I Will Remember You", "Ice Cream", and "Stupid"), spent $150,000 to create it, but the catch was that only $15 was spent on recording McLachlan performing the song in a bedroom; $145,985 was donated to nearly a dozen charities (including War Child, Engineers Without Borders, and CARE USA), the effects of which are shown during clips presented in the video.
