Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin with, the name "Fleetwood Mac" comes from the rhythm section: drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. Before joining Peter Green to form "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac", they worked briefly with John Mayall and Eric Clapton in a band. What was the name of this band?

Answer: The Bluesbreakers

British Blues at its finest. Mayall and the Bluesbreakers continued touring into the 21st century, and some of the finest British musicians have come through the Bluesbreakers.

But it is perhaps most amazing to consider that the roots of Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie) and Cream (Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce) both came out of the Bluesbreakers in the mid-1960s. Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones and the great drummer Aynsley Dunbar (Jefferson Starship, Frank Zappa) have also been Bluesbreakers.
2. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, lead guitarist Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were working on their first and only album together before Fleetwood Mac. What was the name of this treasure?

Answer: Buckingham Nicks

"Buckingham Nicks" was the name of the group and the album. "Crystal", "Long Distance Winner", and "Frozen Love" were some tracks on the album. Lindsay's and Stevie's voices are young and raw, and the overall sound is unpolished, but the album is definitely a worthwhile listen to fans of Fleetwood Mac's music. "Long Distance Winner" was released on the Stevie Nicks "Enchanted" box set.

It was this album that attracted the members of Fleetwood Mac to Buckingham and Nicks as they needed to replace Bob Welch. The first album they came out with that included Buckingham and Nicks was "Fleetwood Mac" (aka "The White Album"), ranked number 183 by Rolling Stone on the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The second one? "Rumours", number 25 on the same list.
3. The fifth piece of Fleetwood Mac's most common lineup is keyboardist Christine Perfect, better known by her married name Christine McVie. Her original band Chicken Shack is too obscure for me to feature even in this quiz, so I will instead ask what was the title of her song that hit #10 on the US charts in 1984?

Answer: Got a Hold On Me

"Got a Hold on Me" was a catchy tune, "I Got a Love (I Got Somebody) This Love (Got a Hold on Me)" that fit in well in mid 1980s.

"Everywhere" is a track off the "Tango in the Night" album. It was a hit (#14, 1988), and it was written and sung by Christine, but it was a Fleetwood Mac song.

"Songbird", off the Fleetwood Mac album "Rumours", was a solo Christine McVie piece that would usually close the final encore of a Fleetwood Mac concert. Beautiful song: "And the songbirds keep singing like they know the score. And I love you, I love you, I love you like never before, like never before, like never before."

"Nightingale" is a parody of Christine McVie by Sandra Bernhard. Actually, surprisingly good.
4. Before Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, there was Bob Welch, lead singer and guitarist. He wrote and sang a song that was a minor hit for Fleetwood Mac, then after leaving and going solo, redid the song in 1977. What was this great song that started out with the lyrics "You are here and warm, but I could look away and you'd be gone"?

Answer: Sentimental Lady

In 1977, music was Fleetwood Mac. The "Rumours" album, "Go Your Own Way", "Second Hand News", "The Chain", "You Make Lovin' Fun", "Gold Dust Woman".

And there was this song. "Sentimental gentle wind, blowing through my life again, sentimental lady, gentle one."

Some had no idea it had once been a Fleetwood Mac song, appearing on the album "Bare Trees" in 1972.
5. During the early 1980s, Stevie Nicks was incredibly busy. Not only was she working with Fleetwood Mac, she was also making a name for herself as a solo artist. She also recorded many hit duets. With which of the following singers did she NOT record a song?

Answer: Peter Cetera

Some of the greatest duets of the 1980s involved Stevie Nicks. Don Henley joined her with "Leather and Lace", Kenny Loggins did "Whenever I Call You Friend", and Tom Petty did "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".

Peter Cetera did several duets as well, but none with Stevie Nicks.
6. Mick Fleetwood also fronted a band on the side when not working with Fleetwood Mac. What was the simple name of this band?

Answer: Mick Fleetwood's Zoo

I always thought Mick Fleetwood resembled "Animal" from "The Muppet Show". The Zoo did an album in 1983, "I'm Not Me", and another in 1992, "Shakin' the Cage".

"The Fleetwoods" were a group from the 1960s that did "Come Softly to Me". "The Chain" was a Fleetwood Mac song off "Rumours" that some would consider to be the group's signature song.
7. After Stevie Nicks left Fleetwood Mac, in 1995, Bekka Bramlett was brought on board as the female lead singer for the album "Time". She was the daughter of a 1960's musical duo. What singers were Bramlett's parents?

Answer: Delaney & Bonnie

Bekka Bramlett played with Mick Fleetwood's Zoo before joining Fleetwood Mac.

Delaney & Bonnie were a marginally successful rock/soul duo who were overshadowed by the company they kept. They frequently performed with "guest stars" like Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Duane Allman. Since they always had headliners as guests, the focus was more on the guests than on them, and as such, they were never able to draw much attention to themselves.

Another child of a 1960's musician also made the jump from the Zoo to Fleetwood Mac. Billy Burnette, the son of 60's Rockabilly guitarist Dorsey Burnette, was one of two guitarists who replaced Lindsay Buckingham, doing so in 1990 for the "Behind the Mask" album.
8. "We Are The World, We Are The Children. We Are The Ones Who Make A Brighter Day, So Let's Start Giving." "We Are The World", USA For Africa, the great 1985 charity project, included one member of the classic 12-year Fleetwood Mac lineup. Which one?

Answer: Lindsay Buckingham

Only two of the performers in USA for Africa were not American (USA was "United Support of Artists"), Dan Aykroyd and Bob Geldof. Only two members of Fleetwood Mac were American, and Stevie Nicks wasn't there. Lindsay Buckingham sings in the chorus, but is not one of the soloists.
9. Lindsay Buckingham was known also for penning and and performing the soundtrack song for an Anthony Michael Hall movie. What song and movie was this?

Answer: "Holiday Road", from "National Lampoon's Vacation"

"Weird Science" is done by Oingo Boingo, "Don't You Forget About Me" is Simple Minds, and "Love Will Turn You Around" is Kenny Rogers.

"Holiday Road" is a simple, catchy, fun tune that fits the mood of the movie perfectly.
10. Stevie Nicks evokes the image of a classic fairy tale in one of her great solo singles. Which fairy tale provides the title for her song?

Answer: Beauty and the Beast

An absolutely beautiful ballad that she notes in the liner notes of her "Timespace" greatest hits album is written for Mick Fleetwood. Slow, rumbling, haunting, soothing, beautiful instrumentation, a definite change from her usual style both as a solo artist and with Fleetwood Mac.
