Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This album, entitled "(Artist's Name) In Concert" was recorded from a 1962 concert tour. Some of the songs are "Kumbaya," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "Ate Amanha," "Danger Waters," "Copper Kettle," and "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You." Who is the artist?

Answer: Joan Baez

The jacket notes describing Baez and her performance on the songs in this album quote Heinrich Heine and Percy Bysshe Shelley. On the back, the title is expanded to add "accompanying herself on the guitar." Perhaps the quintessential American folk singer, born in New York City (Staten Island), her father was born in Mexico and her mother in Scotland.
2. The next album was released in 1972 and its title is simply the artist's name. It includes "Mother and Child Reunion," "Duncan," "Armistice Day," "Peace Like a River," and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." This was his first album after leaving behind a very successful duet career.

Answer: Paul Simon

Simon was born the same year as Joan Baez, in 1941. This album has only ten songs, but it was not recorded in one sitting. "Mother and Child Reunion," the title of which was reportedly inspired by a chicken and egg dish in a Chinese Restaurant, was recorded in Jamaica, while "Duncan" and "Hobo's Blues" were recorded in Paris, and "Paranoia Blues" was recorded in Los Angeles. Simon also did a video of "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" which included New York Yankee great Mickey Mantle.
3. Album three is by Arlo Guthrie, son of legendary folksinger Woody Guthrie. The cover shows Arlo seated at a table, set with two candles, a plate, and two glasses. He has a fork in his left hand and a knife in his right. He is shirtless, but has a napkin on his chest, and he's wearing a bowler hat. What is the name of this album?

Answer: Alice's Restaurant

"Alice's Restaurant Massacree," an anti-draft talking blues ditty about Thanksgiving in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, takes up the entirety of side one on the album and has a running time of 18:20. Side two has six songs, including "The Motorcycle Song" and "Ring-Around-a-Rosy Rag."
4. Album four is by the iconic Bob Dylan; interestingly enough, another folk singer born in 1941. Released in 1964, this was his third album and included such political bombshells as "Only a Pawn in Their Game," "With God on Our Side," and "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll." Name this album.

Answer: The Times They Are a-Changin'

"Blood on the Tracks" (1975), "Knocked Out Loaded" (1986), and "Under the Red Sky" (1990) all came much further along in Dylan's career. "The Times They Are a-Changin" was released a year before the first album in which Dylan used electronic instruments, the 1965 release "Bringing it All Back Home." From then on Dylan moved more into rock star status than his folk singer origins of the earlier Sixties.
5. It could be argued if album five is by a folk singer or not, but at least some of his work has been identified as folk. Released in 1972, it was recorded in concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Among the songs on the two-disk album are "Solitary Man," "Red Red Wine," "Song Sung Blue," and "I Am...I Said." Who is the artist and what is the album?

Answer: Neil Diamond - "Hot August Night"

Born in Brooklyn in 1941, the same year as Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Paul Simon, how could anyone doubt that Neil Diamond would qualify as a folk singer?
6. On the back of the cover for album six, "Reflections," a subtitle says the album contains "A very special collection of (artist's name)'s most requested songs of the 'folk years,' recorded from 1963 through 1965." Songs include folk classics like "The Bells of Rhymney," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Early Morning Rain," and "Turn! Turn! Turn!".

Answer: Judy Collins

Collins is probably best identified with two songs not on this album: "Both Sides Now" and "Send in the Clowns." Clearly in the same generation as most of the other folk singers in this quiz, Judy was born just a smidge too soon, in 1939.
7. Originally released in 1970, my seventh album was renamed shortly after its release. Originally titled "Sit Down Young Stranger," name the Canadian-born artist and the title of my album which includes the songs "Me and Bobby McGee," "Minstrel of the Dawn," and "Cobwebs & Dust."

Answer: Gordon Lightfoot - "If You Could Read My Mind"

Lightfoot wrote all of the songs on this album except for "Me and Bobby McGee." A December 1, 2011 article in the "Winnipeg Free Press" by Allison Mayes referred to him as "the nation's (Canada's) greatest songwriter," while reporting that he heard his own obituary on the car radio while passing a cemetery in Toronto.
8. My next album is pure folk music with such songs as "Michael," "Greenback Dollar," "Blowin' in the Wind," "Lemon Tree," "We'll Sing in the Sunshine," and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright." As a matter of fact, the album's title is "The Folk Album." Can you name this Dallas native whose "Lemon Tree" single reached number two in the US?

Answer: Trini Lopez

"The Folk Album" did not include perhaps Trini's biggest hit, "If I Had a Hammer," which the album notes identified as having "reached No. 1 hit status in 21 countries at the time of (the album's) going to press..." Eventually it got to the top in 36, although it only got to number three in the US.
9. Album nine is the oldest on the quiz and, like album two, bears the artist's name as its title. Released in 1956, it includes "Scarlet Ribbons," "Unchained Melody," "Waterboy," "Sylvie," and "Matilda." Name the album and the artist, also known as the "King of Calypso".

Answer: Belafonte

Another native of New York City, Harry Belafonte was born in Harlem in 1927. Probably best known for "Banana Boat Song," Belafonte was also very active in civil rights and humanitarian activities and movements in the USA.
10. Released in 1970 and titled "Jubilee," this album was the 22nd by this artist. Songs included are "Honey Wind Blows," "San Francisco Bay Blues," and "Baby, the Rain Must Fall." Can you name this former lead singer with The Limeliters?

Answer: Glenn Yarbrough

Glenn was born in Milwaukee in 1930. Although he recorded a solo album in 1951, the rest of his solo albums came after leaving The Limeliters, beginning with "Come Sit by My Side" in 1957.
