Nicknamed "The Colonel," Steve Cropper was a producer for Stax records and a guitarist for Booker T. & the M.G.'s. As a member of the Stax records house band, he backed numerous musicians in recordings, including Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and Johnnie Taylor. Later, he became a member of the Blues Brothers Band.

The song was released in January of 1968. Just a few days after completing the song with Steve Cooper, Otis Redding died in a private plane crash on Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. Rolling Stone magazine reports, "While divers searched for Redding's body, Cropper kept his mind busy by mixing 'Dock of the Bay.' On December 11th, 1967, the plane was pulled out of the lake, with Redding's body still strapped into the co-pilot's seat." The song was the first posthumously released song to top the charts in the United States.
