Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend, Just what you want to be, you will be in the end", are lyrics to which Moody Blues song?

Answer: Nights in White Satin

Sorry to the fans out there, but this song seriously makes me cringe. Bad memories, which is in no way a criticism of this talented band. Interesting fact I found was that The Moody Blues were invited to play at Woodstock in 1969. They showcased a concert in Paris instead. There reportedly are some original posters that show them as performers. Wow, to have one of those would be a find!
2. Verse 3 of which song contains the lyrics, "Stay with me while we grow old, And we will live each day in Springtime"?

Answer: Lovin' You

Keeping with the title of this quiz, this is another song I really disliked. Recorded by the talented Minnie Riperton, whose vocal ability was amazing, this song is probably a favorite of many. For the few out there who are unaware, Minnie was the mother of Maya Rudolph.

In fact, Minnie chants, "Maya, Maya, Maya", at the end of the song in the unedited and album versions. The song was recorded in 1975, and sadly one year later Ms Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away in 1979 at the age of 31. RIP Minnie.
3. "I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon, And cut through all this red tape", are lyrics from which song released in 1979?

Answer: Escape (The Pina Colada Song)

Seriously, when this song plays on the radio, I have to change the station STAT! Songwriter Rupert Holmes states that the first line of the chorus originally was written "If you like Humphrey Bogart". Perhaps I would have liked the song better with that line. I did have a giggle, however, when the song played during "The Dating Game" segment of "Shrek." Genre; soft rock, the B-side song was "Drop it".
4. "You take the grey skies out of my way (hoo, hoo), You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day", are lyrics from what 1984 runaway hit?

Answer: Wake Me Up Before You Go Go

This hit by the duo WHAM! is another song I hate, while it is no doubt enjoyed by thousands. The song was written and produced by George Michael (RIP) and was soon platinum in the US. The music video, however, was listed in "NME's" 50 worst music videos. The song was showcased in a very funny scene in the movie "Zoolander".
5. "You can tell your mom I moved to Arkansas, You can tell your dog to bite my leg", are lyrics from what 1992 hit country song?

Answer: Achy Breaky Heart

The signature hit for Billy Ray Cyrus is yet another one of my most hated songs. Sorry to the fans, but I call them like I see them, or in this case, hear them. The song did quite well in the charts, not to mention as a theme song for the line dance craze.

It is noteworthy that the song was offered to The Oak Ridge Boys, but lead singer Duane Allen didn't like the words, "achy breaky". Good call, Duane! One of my favorite movies, "Needful Things", based on the book by Stephen King, did have a hilarious scene in a tavern, when a customer kicked the stuffing out of a jukebox that was playing this song. Funny!
6. Richard Harris recorded a 1968 rendition of what song that included the lyrics, "I recall the yellow cotton dress, foaming like a wave, on the ground beneath your knees."

Answer: MacArthur Park

Yep, hate, hate this song. No offense to the gifted Richard Harris, who I adored in "Camelot". Surprisingly, the song was also recorded by Donna Summer, Waylon Jennings, and The Four Tops. Written and composed by Jimmy Webb, whose inspiration came from a real-life breakup with his girlfriend in the mid 1960s.

They often met for lunch at MacArthur Park in LA. Webb stated this same breakup moved him to write another one of his hits, "By The Time I Get to Phoenix."
7. In 1971 British group T.Rex included the lyrics "Well, you're windy and wild, You've got the blues in your shoes and your stockings," from which of their songs?

Answer: Get it On

Not only do I dislike this tune, it really doesn't make much sense to me. It was renamed "Bang a Gong (Get it On)" for release in the US. The song was recorded by Blondie in 1978 and Witch Queen in 1979, which was a disco version. It is also on the list for one-hit wonders of the 1970s.
8. This should be an easy one, especially for anyone who remembers the songs of the 70s. Name the song that laments; "I wish I've never met you, girl, You'll never come again."

Answer: Feelings

Perhaps I hate this song because it seemed to be so overplayed on the radio at the time. Written and performed by Morris Albert of Brazil, the song did very well internationally. Unfortunately for Albert, the song is now credited to songwriter Louis Gaste as well as Albert. Gaste sued Albert in 1986 for plagiarism. Gaste won the lawsuit and the writers now share credits. Shirley Bassey recorded the song in 1976. Once during a lecture, Julie Andrews stated she considered the song too difficult to sing because it had no meaning behind it. Oh, Julie, how I concur! She said this during a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution.
9. Another cringe-worthy addition to the songs I hate contain the lyrics; "And they whirl and they twirl and they tango; singing and jinging a jango".

Answer: Muskrat Love

Released in 1976 by Captain and Tennille, "Muskrat Love" flew to number four on Billboard Hot 100 chart. This tune had been previously recorded by the rock band America. Captain and Tennille performed this song for Queen Elizabeth at a dinner at the White House in 1976. I wonder if Her Highness enjoyed it anymore than I did?
10. For the final song I hate, I must include these lyrics; "Do you know the meaning? I've been sanctified, girl, you give me a good feeling, I've been sanctified."

Answer: Let's Get It On

Released in 1973 by the one and only Marvin Gaye, this record was written by Gaye and Ed Townsed and became his most successful single for Motown. I think my dislike of the song was due to a boss of mine who used to sing it all the time during working hours. Again, no offense to fans!
