Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1955 Elvis Presley US Country Number Five single from his "A Date with Elvis" album contained the lyrics "Well, you may go to college, you may go to school. You may have a pink Cadillac, but don't you be nobody's fool"?

Answer: Baby Let's Play House

Arthur Gunter composed and recorded "Baby Let's Play House" in 1954 on the Excello label. Elvis Presley released a single of the song the following year on the Sun Records label. Elvis rearranged the song and changed the lyrics from "You may get religion" to "You may have a Pink Cadillac", perhaps a reference to a car he had recently purchased.
Georgia native Arthur Gunter's original recording reached number 12 on the US Billboard Rhythm and Blues charts. After Elvis released his single Buddy Holly recorded a cover of the song that failed to chart.
"I Want You, I Need You, I Love You" and "Don't Be Cruel" were US Number One singles for Elvis in 1956. "My Baby Left Me" went to Number 31 the same year.
2. Which Country artist had his last US Country Number One single with a song about a Cadillac titled "One Piece at A Time" in 1976?

Answer: Johnny Cash

"One Piece at A Time" from the album of the same name was Johnny Cash's final Number One Country single. When it reached Number 29 it was his final Top Forty crossover single on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song lyrics relate how an assembly line worker at a Cadillac plant stole Cadillac parts over several years and built a composite Cadillac from all the parts because he couldn't afford one himself. A Nashville salvage yard actually built a car described in the song and it ended up at The House of Cash for several years.
The lyrics of the tune make reference to the CB radio craze by calling the car a "psychobilly Cadillac".
Singer/songwriter Wayne Kemp composed the song. He also composed "Love Bug" for George Jones (1965). Kemp released a self-titled album in 1971. His highest charting Country single was "Honky Tonk Wine" (1973).
"Drinkin' My Baby (Off My Mind)" went to Number One for Eddie Rabbitt in 1976. Marty Robbins took "El Paso City" to the top of the charts the same year and Red Sovine's "Teddy Bear" also topped the Country charts in 1976.
3. "Beep Beep" is a 1958 single from The Playmates that tells of a competition between a Cadillac and which other vehicle?

Answer: Nash Rambler

During the song the tempo accelerates as the Cadillac and the Nash Rambler go faster. At the end of the song we learn that the driver of the Rambler couldn't figure out how to get the car out of second when they get to 120MPH. "Beep Beep" made it to Number Four in the US and while "Beep Beep" was popular The Playmates appeared on television shows promoting the song.
In 1958 The Playmates were the first vocal group to sign with Roulette Records. They released the Number 19 "Jo-Ann" and the Number 22 "Don't Go Home" before having their biggest chart success with "Beep Beep". Their final entry into the US Top Forty was the Number 15 "What Is Love". The group disbanded in 1965.
Because the UK did not allow the promotion of brand names the vehicles were changed to "bubble car" and "limousine".
4. Which 1955 Chuck Berry hit song relates how he chased his girlfriend around town in her Coupe DeVille while driving a Ford?

Answer: Maybelline

The first verse of "Maybelline" begins "As I was motervatin' over the hill
I saw Maybellene in a Coupe de Ville." Chuck Berry wrote and recorded "Maybellene" for Chess Records in 1955 and it became his first hit, reaching Number Five on the US charts and topping the Rhythm and Blues chart.
It was originally intended to be called Ida May but Chess Records suggested that he change the name. It has been titled "Maybelline" and "Maybellene" on different pressings. The single began a string of hits for the St Louis resident through the fifties and sixties until he finally had a Number One single in 1972 with "My Ding-a-Ling" from his "The London Chuck Berry Sessions" album.
"Too Much Monkey Business", "You Can't Catch Me" and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" were released the following year.
5. Which song is a Bruce Springsteen recording that was recorded for Springsteen's "The River" album in 1980?

Answer: Cadillac Ranch

"Cadillac Ranch" was not released as a single in the US but became a popular song at his concerts and a live rendition was included on the "Live/1975-85" LP. Inspiration for the song came from the legendary Cadillac Ranch off of Interstate 40 near Amarillo, Texas, where people can stop and write graffiti on Cadillacs that are buried halfway in the ground.
Status Quo released a version of "Cadillac Ranch" on their 1999 "Back to the Beginning" album.
"Cadillac Boogie" was done by Jimmy Liggins in 1948. Quiet Riot recorded "Slick Black Cadillac". "Cadillac Baby" was recorded by Colin James.
6. Aretha Franklin had a 1988 hit with her cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac".

Answer: False

Aretha Franklin released "Freeway of Love" in 1985, not 1988. "I Live For Your Love" and "Pink Cadillac" were selected for inclusion on Natalie Cole's 1987 "Everlasting" album. "Pink Cadillac" was the third single release from the LP and reached Number Five in the US matching a previous single "I've Got Love on My Mind". A remix reached the top of the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.
Composer Bruce Springsteen intended to include the song on his 1984 "Born in the U.S.A" album but it was bumped and released as a single. He admired Cole's rendition of the song even though he had blocked Bette Midler from releasing a version in 1983 because he didn't believe it should be done by a female singer.
Jerry Lee Lewis recorded a version for his 2006 "Last Man Standing" album.
7. What was Dwight Yoakam singing about along with Cadillacs in the title of his 1986 US Number Four Country single?

Answer: Guitars

Kentucky native Dwight Yoakam wrote and recorded "Guitars, Cadillacs" and released it as a single from his "Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc." album, the first of three consecutive US Number One Country albums. The first single release was a cover of a Johnny Horton song titled "Honky Tonk Man" which reached Number Three. The video for "Honky Tonk Man" became the first Country video played on MTV. "Guitars, Cadillacs" was the second release.
In 1988 Yoakam hit the top of the charts when he recorded a duet with Buck Owens titled "Streets of Bakersfield".
In 1992 Dwight began his film career in "Red Rock West" playing a truck driver and in 1994 he was nominated by the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his role as abusive Doyle Hargraves in "Sling Blade".
8. What color was the Cadillac in the lyric of the Stray Cats' 1984 US single "Look At That Cadillac"?

Answer: Black

The song's first verse says "Well, I wake up in the morning, I brush my teeth and comb my hair. There's a big black Cadillac parked on the street over there." "Look At That Cadillac" by The Stray Cats peaked at Number 68.
In 1979 guitar player Brian Setzer teamed up with bassist Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom to form the band in Massapequa, New York. They relocated to England to check out a resurgence of Rock-A-Billy music and in 1981 released "Rock This Town" and "Stray Cat Strut" from their eponymous debut album. They released a second album in Britain and in 1982 a compilation of tracks from their first two albums was released in the US as "Built for Speed".
By 1984 conflicts and solo project resulted in the breakup of the group but they reformed two years later and worked until 1993. Brian went on to form The Brian Setzer Orchestra and the other members pursued various solo efforts as well as session work.
9. Which 1992 Brooks and Dunn chart-topping US Country single contains the lyrics "Whoa Cadillac black jack, baby meet me outback we're gonna boogie" in the chorus?

Answer: Boot Scootin' Boogie

The entire line is "Whoa Cadillac black jack, baby meet me outback we're gonna boogie. Oh get down, turn around go to town boot scootin' boogie." "Boot Scootin' Boogie" was one of the Country genre songs responsible for a resurgence of Country line dancing.
Before teaming up in 1991 Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn were established songwriters and had each released solo projects. They went on to put 20 singles on the top spot from their over 50 single releases. In 2009 the duo announced an amicable breakup after their "The Last Rodeo" tour.
"Brand New Man" from their debut album of the same name was the duo's first Number One single. In 1995 "Little Miss Honky Tonk" went to the top of the charts. "Honky Tonk Truth" was released in 1997
10. Which artist released "Willie The Wimp" in 1986 about burying Willie in a Cadillac coffin?

Answer: Stevie Ray Vaughan

The lyrics to Stevie Ray Vaughan's single "Willie the Wimp" include the lyrics "Talkin' 'bout Willie the Wimp and his Cadillac coffin" along with several references to Cadillacs.
After releasing a few uncharted singles Vaughan had success in 1983 with singles from his "Let's Dance" album including "Let's Dance" and a duet with David Bowie titled "Cat People". In 1989 "Crossfire" topped the US Rock charts. In 1986 "Willie The Wimp" made it to Number 19 on the same chart.
Dallas native Stevie Ray Vaughan formed Double Trouble in the late seventies and in 1982 his "Texas Flood" album made Number 38.
"R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." was a 1986 hit by John Cougar Mellencamp. Eddie Money released "Take Me Home Tonight" the same year. "Major Tom (Coming Home)" was a 1984 single by Peter Schilling.
