Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kids in America"
Answer: The Muffs
Originally released in 1981 by Kim Wilde as her debut single, "Kids in America" was covered by American punk rock band The Muffs in 1995. The song plays right at the start of the movie as the Paramount logo forms, and continues through the opening credits and montage that introduces us to the main character of the movie, Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone.
2. "Fashion"
Answer: David Bowie
"Fashion" was the second single to be released from David Bowie's fourteenth studio album "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)". The song plays as we see Cher getting herself ready for school, which includes her using a computer system to "pick out her school clothes" by confirming which outfit combinations are a good match.
3. "Just a Girl"
Answer: No Doubt
Originally released in 1995, "Just a Girl" was No Doubt's first commercial success, although it was outdone by their massive hit "Don't Speak" the following year. We hear the song playing very quietly in the background over "breakfast", before increasing in volume as we see Cher driving to school in the "loqued out" (cool) Jeep that her Daddy got her, knocking over a plant pot and picking up her best friend Dionne, played by Stacey Dash, on the way.
4. "Shoop"
Answer: Salt-N-Pepa
"Shoop" was the lead single from American hip-hop/rap group Salt-N-Pepa's fourth studio album "Very Necessary". We hear the song as Dionne's boyfriend Murray (played by Donald Faison), who likes to wear his pants very low, meets Cher and Dionne as they are walking through the school grounds.
5. "Fake Plastic Trees"
Answer: Radiohead
The British alternative rock band Radiohead released "Fake Plastic Trees" as a single from their second studio album the critically acclaimed "The Bends" in May 1995. An acoustic version of the track is heard in the movie as Cher is applying her lipstick having changed after school, and we are introduced to her step-brother Josh, played by Paul Rudd.
6. "Change"
Answer: The Lightning Seeds
Formed by Ian Broudie in 1989, The Lightning Seeds are a British alternative rock band who are perhaps best known for their collaboration with comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel on the 1996 single "Three Lions", which was released to celebrate England's hosting of the UEFA European Football Championship in England that year.
Their 1995 single "Change" is heard in the movie as we see the relationship between Mr Hall (Wallace Shawn) and Miss Geist (Twink Caplan) start to blossom following Cher and Dionne's intervention in an attempt to earn the student body better grades ... a tactic which seems to have worked rather well!
7. "Supermodel"
Answer: Jill Sobule
Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule was born in Denver, Colorado in 1961, and is best known for her single "I Kissed a Girl" released in 1985. Her song "Supermodel" is played in the movie during the montage where Cher and Dionne are giving the new girl Tai Frasier (played by Brittany Murphy) a makeover.
8. "Alright"
Answer: Supergrass
The English rock band Supergrass were active between 1993 and 2010, and consisted of brothers Gaz and Rob Coombes (vocals/guitar and keyboards respectively), Mick Quinn (bass), and Danny Goffey (drums). "Alright" is probably the band's best-known hit, and it plays during a scene in the movie where Cher is photographing the group of friends and trying to get Elton Tiscia (played by Jeremy Sisto) interested in the newly made-over Tai.
9. "Rollin' With My Homies"
Answer: Coolio
Known professionally as Coolio, American rapper Artis Leon Ivey Jr. was born on 1st August 1963. His song "Rollin' With My Homies" is playing during the party in the Valley at which Tai is hit in the head by a flying shoe, and is tended to by Elton, suggesting that Cher's plan to get them together is working, however we find out in the very next scene that Elton actually has designs on Cher.
10. "Away"
Answer: The Cranberries
Written by the late Dolores O'Riordan, who died aged just 46 on 15th January 2018, "Away" was included as a bonus track on The Cranberries' 1994 single "Zombie". The song is playing in Elton's car as he drives Cher home from the party, and he sings along to the lyrics before trying (unsuccessfully) to seduce Cher.
