He was born in Dallas October 3, 1954. His older brother Jimmie, an outstanding blues guitarist in his own right, was a major influence in Stevie's development as a guitarist.

He was a passenger in one of four helicopters ferrying performers from the concert site to Chicago. The crash occurred less than a mile from the concert site. The NTSB report indicated no malfunction, but there was some fog and the pilot failed to gain enough altitude, crashing into a hillside.
SRV was buried in his home town of Dallas with many music greats (Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Stevie Wonder to name a few) attending his funeral.
