That 70s Music--Classic Rock Edition Quiz

This quiz is the last of my "That 70s Music" series. It celebrates "Classic Rock". Edgier than soft rock but not as edgy as heavy metal, classic rock is primarily a group genre with a few solo artists. Enjoy!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When this group flew into the music scene they gave us a "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and encouraged us to "Take It Easy". Who were they?

Answer: Eagles

During the 1970s, The Eagles outsold every other American band. In "Rolling Stone" magazine their album "Hotel California" was ranked number 37 in their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
2. According to one of their hits, what can't Bad Company "Get Enough Of"?

Answer: Your Love

The original Bad Company formed in 1973 with Paul Rodgers as lead vocalist. The group continued to perform despite several personnel changes, but the original group got back together after attending the funeral of their former manager Peter Grant. They went into the studio shortly afterwards and cut four new songs to add to a compilation album of their hits.
3. Epic Records released REO Speedwagon's first live album. What was its title?

Answer: Live: You Get What You Play For

REO Speedwagon joined with Styx and Journey for a concert tour in 2003 entitled "Classic Rock's Main Event Tour". Altogether the band had 13 Top 40 hits including "Keep On Loving You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling".
4. What band had a hit with their cover version of the Little Eva hit "The Locomotion"?

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

Grand Funk Railroad formed in Flint Michigan in 1969. Their third album "Closer to Home" which featured their hit "I'm Your Captain" went multi-platinum in 1970.
5. What classic group's hit invited us to "Listen To The Music"?

Answer: The Doobie Brothers

The song was written by Tom Johnston who once said he wrote it as a "call for world peace". In recent years it has been used in commercials for Branson, Missouri to promote tourism to that area.
6. "Southern rock" is almost a genre in itself. What group paid homage to their roots with a song called "Sweet Home Alabama"?

Answer: Lynyrd Skynyrd

"Sweet Home Alabama" peaked at number eight in 1974 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was covered by the country group "Alabama" on a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute album called "Skynyrd Friends" in 1994 and was also the title song of a movie of the same name.
7. What group had a hit with "Roundabout"?

Answer: Yes

Yes was a British band formed in 1968 in London. They were the opening band for legendary group Jethro Tull on their first North American tour.
8. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are essentially a three piece group with an occasional fourth member. Which one is the "fourth wheel"?

Answer: Neil Young

Neil had worked with Stephen Stills in Buffalo Springfield. After they broke up he became a solo artist. He continued his solo career with great success while performing and recording with Crosby, Stills and Nash.
9. Even though there is a heavy emphasis on horns rather than guitars, Chicago would have to be considered one of the great classic rock bands. Before they shortened their name, they were known as Chicago Transit Authority. But that was not their original name. What was it?

Answer: The Big Thing

"The Big Thing" began as a six piece cover band in Chicago. But when they began writing original songs, adding tenor singer and bassist Peter Cetera, they collectively decided to move to Los Angeles and pursue a recording contract. After signing with Columbia Records they changed their name to Chicago Transit Authority which was eventually shortened to Chicago after they were threatened with a lawsuit by the actual Chicago Transit Authority.
10. Before Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Randy Bachman was with another very successful band. Who were they?

Answer: The Guess Who

The Guess Who continued to record and perform, scoring several hits after Randy left the group. Bachman-Turner Overdrive was originally known as Brave Belt. Their biggest hit "Taking Care Of Business" has been a staple of garage bands. I can attest to that.
