Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the first model guitar produced by Fender?

Answer: 'Broadcaster'

Leo Fender produced the 'Broadcaster', which was a prototype of the 'Telecaster', in 1951.
2. What was unusual about the first Gibson 'SG' guitars made?

Answer: They were advertised as the "new 'Les Paul' model".

Around 1959 the "Les Paul" model was discontinued and Gibson launched their SG model one or two years later as the second version "Les Paul" with a "Les Paul Model" decal on the headstock. By 1962 Les Paul's endorsement contract was up for re-negotiation and he objected to the new model bearing his name. Eventually he sued Gibson to have them remove his name from the SG, which then became known under that very name.

Gibson later relaunched the 'Les Paul' in the late 1960s.

(Thanks for that information Martin).
3. Which company makes the highly-collectable 'White Falcon' semi-acoustic guitar?

Answer: Gretsch.

The 'White Falcon' has Dave Stewart and Billy Duffy among its devotees.
4. How can the original 'Squier' guitars, made by Fender, be distinguished from the later models?

Answer: The serial numbers begin with 'JV'.

The 'Squier' series provides professional standard instruments at a budget price. The headstock design was soon changed to prevent any confusion.
5. The Ibanez Destroyer was patterned after which other guitar?

Answer: Gibson Explorer.

Sadly, the Destroyer no longer seemes to be a part of the Ibanez range, at least, it is no longer featured on the official web site.
6. Which model guitar has a highly prized variety nicknamed 'Black Beauty'?

Answer: Gibson Les Paul.

The 'Black Beauty' is a 1957 'Les Paul Custom' which has three humbucking pick-ups and is finished in black. A truly beautiful guitar.
7. In 1957, Gibson began using 'PAF' pick-ups on their guitars. What does 'PAF' stand for?

Answer: 'Patent Applied For'

The 'PAF' is a 'humbucker' which uses two coils to minimise unwanted sound from the guitar.
8. In which year did Fender introduce the 'Stratocaster'?

Answer: 1954.

The 'Stratocaster', or 'Strat' as it is affectionately known, is probably the best selling guitar of all time.
9. What was unusual about Ray Dietrich, the designer of the Gibson 'Firebird'?

Answer: He was an automobile designer.

The 'Firebird' was introduced in 1963 following the success of the 'SG' series.
10. Who designed the Steinberger 'M Series' guitars?

Answer: Mike Rutherford.

The Steinberger 'M Series' is the first Steinberger to feature a 'normal' guitar body. It is also the first design to originate from outside the company.
