Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. _ _ was born in London in 1933. He is famous for playing both the guitar and the lute, and as well as playing the traditional guitar repertoire, he has commissioned works from Benjamin Britten, Lennox Berkeley and Stephen Dodgson, among many others.

Answer: Julian Bream

Bream is known for his emotive style of playing, as compared with the more detached (in my opinion!) style of John Williams.
2. The Bach D minor '-' is one of the greatest (and most difficult) works in the guitar's repertoire, although it was originally written for the violin. It lasts for over 10 minutes.

Answer: Chaconne

Almost every famous guitarist has recorded a version of the D minor Chaconne, which originates from the Partita No. 2 for solo violin. I can testify from personal experience that it is very hard to play!
3. The serial piece 'Sequenza XI' was written for the US guitarist Eliot Fisk by Luciano -.

Answer: Berio

It is a frankly perplexing piece, but then what do you expect from Berio? The 'Sequenza' series contains pieces for solo accordion and bassoon as well as for guitar. P.S.: R.I.P. Luciano Berio (1925-2003).
4. Hans Werner _'s 'Royal Winter Music' is a gigantic guitar sonata based on Shakespearean characters.

Answer: Henze

Henze writes using the (less and less fashionable!) twelve-tone method, but don't let this put you off listening to 'Royal Winter Music', which is actually quite compelling. It was commissioned by Julian Bream.
5. The _ serialist composer Denis ApIvor has written works called 'Discanti' and 'Saeta' for the guitar.

Answer: Welsh

ApIvor was actually born in the Republic of Ireland, and lived there until he was 5. In addition to his many compositions, ApIvor has also written a book introducing serial composition to guitarists, which includes several pieces written using the method.
6. Heitor Villa-Lobos wrote _ preludes and _ etudes for the guitar, which are some of the most popular pieces of the 20th century.

Answer: 5, 12

These pieces were championed by Segovia, who compared them to the work of Scarlatti and Chopin as being totally idiomatic to the guitar. The etudes in particular are very challenging to play.
7. Another landmark work for guitar in the 20th century was _ _'s 'Quatre Pieces Breves', which contained quasi-serial writing as well as a very tonal 'Air' (the 2nd piece).

Answer: Frank Martin

Martin was a Swiss composer who lived from 1890 to 1974. His Pieces were rejected by Segovia, who was more traditional in his tastes, but they were later played and recorded by Julian Bream, who brought them into the regular repertoire.
8. Going back to the Classical/early Romantic era... Mauro Giuliani (1781-1827) wrote several pieces for guitar and____, including 'Grand Duo Concertant', 'Potpourri' and several Serenades.

Answer: Flute

These pieces work extremely well. Giuliani's Viennese style is made even more attractive by his penchant for Rossinian whimsy. I personally prefer his music to that of his more well-known contemporary, Fernando Sor. Another underrated composer from this era is Dionisio Aguado, who wrote three stunning rondos.
9. Now we move to the mid-Romantic era. The 'Bardic Sounds' (English translation!) by _ _ are a collection of character pieces written in a Schumann-esque style.

Answer: Johann Kaspar Mertz

Mertz (1806-1856) was born in the city of Pressburg, now Bratislava, and is considered one of the four most important guitar composers of the late 19th century (along with Coste, Regondi and Tarrega). The 'Bardenklaenge' are supposedly inspired by the Gaelic bard Ossian. Mertz's 'Fantasie Hongroise' is also popular.
10. The archives of Andres Segovia were recently opened, to reveal a 'Sonatina' for guitar by the English composer Cyril _, the first movement of which Segovia had played in concert.

Answer: Scott

Scott was a bit of a polymath - as well as being a composer (dubbed 'the English Debussy'), he was interested in the occult and in health foods. Scarily, he is an ancestor of mine (he was a cousin of my grandmother's)... Anyway, thanks for doing my second guitar quiz!
