Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1965, what popular duo had the number one hit "I Got You Babe" that was later covered by Beavis and Butthead in 1993?

Answer: Sonny and Cher

"I Got You Babe" was written by Sonny Bono and released as a single in July 1965. The Sonny and Cher version of the song was very successful in the United States peaking at the number one spot on the Billboard Charts and finished the year off at number sixteen. Since its release, there have been various cover versions of the song that include the 1985 rendition by UB40 ft. Chrissy Hynde as well as the 1993 version with Cher ft. Beavis and Butthead.

The UB40 version charted in the US Top 40.
2. Nino Tempo and April Stephens released their only top ten hit in November 1963 with a cover of what song composed by pianist Peter DeRose?

Answer: Deep Purple

"Deep Purple" was first published and composed as an instrumental song in 1933 by American jazz musician Peter DeRose. In 1938, lyrics were added to the song by American-Lithuanian lyricist Mitchell Parish. In 1963, Nino Tempo and his sister Carol LoTempio (using the stage name April Stephens) released their version of the song which charted at the number one spot on the US Billboard charts and had sold over a million copies by the following year.

The song would be the only charting single by the sibling duo in the United States.
3. Between 1957 and 1959, The Coasters released six Top Ten hits with Atco Records. Which of those hits had a title similar to that of a popular comic book character?

Answer: Charlie Brown

Contrary to the belief that "Charlie Brown" is thought to be about the popular Peanuts character, music historians have stated that due to the fact that the "Charlie Brown" comic had not yet reached its popularity, this simply was not the case. It is more likely that many of the references from the song came from the 1955 social commentary film "Blackboard Jungle". Some of the lines from the song including "Who calls the English teacher Daddy-o" appear in the film. The song peaked at the number two spot on the US Billboard charts in February 1959. The Coasters released five other Top Ten hits between 1957 and 1959:

- "Young Blood" went to number eight in 1957.
- "Searchin" went to number three in 1957.
- "Yakety Yak" reached the number one spot in 1958.
- "Along Came Jones" went to the number nine spot in 1959.
- "Poison Ivy" went to number seven in 1959.
4. During his career, singer Bobby Darin released seven Top Ten hits with Atco Records and three with other record labels. Which of the following hits was not released while under contract with Atco?

Answer: You're the Reason I'm Living

Between 1958 and 1962, Bobby Darin released seven Top Ten hits with Atco records including the popular "Mack the Knife" that peaked at the number one spot on the US Billboard charts and "Splish Splash" which peaked at number two in 1959. In 1963, he switched record labels and joined Capitol Records.

The single "You're the Reason I'm Living" became his first US Top Ten hit with another label peaking at the number three spot. The single "18 Yellow Roses" would peak at number ten also for Capitol Records in 1963. By 1966, Darin had signed with yet another record label, Atlantic Records, and had one final Top Ten single with "If I Were A Carpenter" that same year. Sadly, Darin suffered from various health ailments his entire life and by 1973 they would take their toll on his life. On December 20, 1973 he would sadly die following heart surgery, without ever regaining consciousness.
5. What instrumental song charted at the number one spot in May 1962 by Mr. Acker Bilk was used for the theme song of a popular British drama?

Answer: Stranger on the Shore

Prior to his life as a musician, English clarinetist and musician Acker Bilk worked in a cigarette factory, the British Army, and as a blacksmith. While in the military, he had acquired a clarinet from a friend and learned to play with a unique style as he was missing part of a finger due to an accident suffered as a child. Bilk played in the local jazz circuit in both Bristol and London in the United Kingdom during the 1950s.

It was not until 1962 that Bilk became known at the international level. "Stranger on the Shore" spent fifty-five weeks on the charts in the United Kingdom and earned popularity in the United States peaking at the number one spot in May 1962. During his career, he released five Top Ten songs in the United Kingdom, but never again succeeded in cracking the Billboard charts in the United States.
6. What song from the album "Trafalgar" released in 1971 became the first Billboard number one single for The Bee Gees?

Answer: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?

Between 1968 and 1970, The Bee Gees released three Top Ten singles in the United States with "I've Gotta Get A Message", "I Started A Joke", and "Lonely Days". In 1971, they would release their first of nine number one hits on the US Billboard charts with "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?" which peaked in August 7 and remained there for four straight weeks.

After this initial success, they would begin releasing music during the popular disco craze of the 1970s. Six of their number one singles were disco tracks and included "Jive Talkin" (1975), "You Should Be Dancing" (1976), "Stayin' Alive" (1977), "Night Fever" (1978), and "Tragedy" and "Love You Inside Out" (1979).
7. In 1979, what singer and former member of the band Tubeway Army released his only Top Ten Billboard single "Cars"?

Answer: Gary Numan

British musician Gary Numan had seven Top Ten hits on the UK Singles chart between 1979 and 1982, but only one of those charted in the United States. "Cars" peaked in at the number nine spot on the US Billboard charts spending a total of 17 weeks on the Billboard charts.

The song would reach the number one spot in both the United Kingdom as well as in Canada. Gary Numan and The Tubeway Army released a number one UK single with "Are Friends Electric?" in 1979. As Numan was the sole songwriter and producer of the band, it was decided that the name "Tubeway Army" be dropped in 1979, but he chose to keep remaining members from the band to be his backup musicians and "Cars" was their first single released under the name "Gary Numan".
8. In 1970, a short lived rock band from Tampa, Florida had a Top Ten single with the song "Ride Captain Ride". Who were they?

Answer: Blues Image

Blues Image were active as a band from 1966 to 1970 and released three albums, "Blues Image" in 1969, "Open" in 1970, and "Red White and Blues Image" also in 1970. "Ride Captain Ride" was released in April of 1970 from the "Open" album and peaked in at the number four spot on the US Billboard charts that year.

It would be their only Top 40 hit. Following their breakup shortly after their final album release in 1970, various members of the band went on to have careers with other rock bands including Iron Butterfly, Alice Cooper, Three Dog Night, and Steppenwolf.
9. The popular British rock band Yes only had one US Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 single during their tenure with Atco Records.

Answer: True

"Owner of a Lonely Heart", released in 1983, was not only the only number one charting single for English band Yes, but also their only Top Ten hit in the United States. Many have assumed that the 1972 single "Roundabout" charted in the Billboard Hot 100 Top TEn, but in actuality, it fell short peaking in at number thirteen - and was released with Atlantic Records. Between 1983 and 1994, they released nine Top Ten singles on the US Mainstream Rock charts, but only "Owner of a Lonely Heart" charted on Billboard Hot 100 as well.

The singles "Love Will Find a Way" and "Rhythm of Love" peaked in at number one and number two in 1987 on the Mainstream charts with Atco Records. Their final number one Mainstream charting song "Lift Me Up" was released with Arista Records in 1991.
10. By the 1990s, Atco Records had pretty much become stagnant in the music industry. One all-female R&B group however, spawned multiple hits with Atco Records during the early '90s including "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and "Free Your Mind". Who were they?

Answer: En Vogue

In 1992, En Vogue released their Platinum album "Funky Divas" under the label Atco/EastWest Records that spawned three US Billboard Top 10 hit singles. "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" peaked at the number two spot, "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" went to number six, and "Free Your Mind" peaked at the number eight spot. Both the "Funky Divas" album along with their third album "EV3", peaked at the number eight spot on the US Albums chart in 1992 and 1997 with Atco/EastWest Records.
