Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the hardest of Beethoven's sonatas is Piano Sonata No. 29 in B Flat Major, Op. 106. But what is the name of this extremely difficult sonata?

Answer: Hammerklavier

The "Hammerklavier" Sonata takes about 40 to 50 minutes to play. During Beethoven's time, the pianos had wooden frames. The "Hammerklavier" Sonata was so long and strenuous that the pianos had to be tuned after every performance of this sonata. (This does not happen nowadays as modern pianos can endure much more playing.)

The "Hammerklavier" was written in 1818. It was probably named that because of its length and ferocity.
2. Written in 1801, Beethoven's fourteenth sonata has a very calm first movement and is only 15 to 20 minutes long. What is the name of this very famous sonata?

Answer: Moonlight

The "Moonlight" Sonata is one of Beethoven's most famous compositions. It was written at the time when Beethoven was starting to compose different music and was starting to create the Romantic era of music.
3. One of Beethoven's most famous funeral marches is the second movement of his seventh symphony. However, he also composed a sonata which was named "Funeral March". What number was given to this sonata?

Answer: Piano Sonata No.12 (opus 26)

The sonata takes about 20 to 25 minutes to play. It has four movements which was unusual for that time. However, Beethoven had already written six sonatas with four movements. Piano Sonata No. 12 was composed in 1801.
4. In 1809, Beethoven composed his 25th sonata. What name was given to this sonata that takes flight?

Answer: Cuckoo

Piano Sonata No. 25 (opus 79) is the shortest sonata ever composed by Beethoven. It only takes eleven minutes to play all three movements. Compared to his longest sonata, the "Hammerklavier", it is about four times shorter.
5. Beethoven's fourth sonata (opus 7) was the first to receive a name. Interestingly, this name makes this sonata look like the best. What is the name of this composition?

Answer: The Grand Sonata

The "Grand Sonata" lasts between 25-30 minutes, making it one of the longest sonatas composed by Beethoven. Beethoven actually named it "Great Sonata". He did not do this to gain popularity, but because it was published on its own, which was strange for that time period.
6. Only 13 out of 32 of Beethoven's sonatas have names. Which one of these sonatas does NOT have a name?

Answer: Piano Sonata No. 22 (opus 54)

Piano Sonata No. 21 was composed in 1803 and takes about 25 minutes to play. It is one of the hardest sonatas of Beethoven to play. It is named "Waldstein".

Piano Sonata No. 22 was composed in 1804. It only has two movements and is one of Beethoven's least famous sonatas.

Piano Sonata No. 23. "Appassionata", was composed in 1805 and takes about 25 minutes to play. It is the second hardest piano sonata composed by Beethoven.

Piano Sonata No. 24, "à Thérèse", was composed in 1809 and is one of the shortest sonatas composed by Beethoven. It also consists of two movements.
7. What is the name of Beethoven's eighth sonata? It is the second sonata composed by Beethoven to receive a name.

Answer: Pathétique

The sonata was composed in 1798 and takes 15-17 minutes to play. Beethoven named the sonata himself. However, he named it "Grande Sonate Pathétique" (The Pathetic Grand Sonata) but it was shortened to "Pathétique".
8. This unusual symphony of Beethoven's composition was named "Pastoral" and was composed in 1808. Which symphony is this?

Answer: Symphony No. 6

This symphony has five movements which was extremely unusual as symphonies have four movements almost all the time. It was also one of the only symphonies ever where each movement was named, like a chapter in a book. An average performance of this symphony lasts about 40 minutes.
9. Beethoven's twenty-fourth sonata was named after a Hungarian Countess. What is the name of the sonata?

Answer: A Thérèse

Piano Sonata No. 24 was composed in 1809 and is one of the shortest sonatas composed by Beethoven. It consists of two movements which was quite unusual for that time as a piano sonata usually had three movements.
10. Only Beethoven's third and sixth symphonies were named. What is the name of the third symphony?

Answer: Eroica

Beethoven's third symphony was written during his transition from the Classical Era to the Romantic Era. It has many elements of both. The performance of this symphony can take between 40 minutes and 1 hour.
