On her way to perform at the Grand Ole Opry on August 30, 1991, Dottie West was in a car accident. She died in surgery on September 4. Her funeral brought a crowd of over 600 people including Johnny and June Carter Cash. A part of Highway 56 in McMinnville Tennessee was renamed the Dottie West Highway.
