Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which KC and The Sunshine Band song stood at number 2000?

Answer: That's The Way I Like It

As the Top 2000 is always played from the bottom upwards, this was the first song to be heared, and one of only two KC songs. The other one was "Please Don't Go" at number 1852.
2. Skipping 200 places we arrived at number 1800, where we met a rocker still going strong and a dead reggae legend. Who performed "Don't Look Back"?

Answer: Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh

This hit from 1979 was up 9 places. The other three mentioned combinations never were, as far as I know.
3. The list did not only contain pop music. The big bands also had a say. One of them was the Billy Vaughn Orchestra. What song slipped down from 1452 to 1805?

Answer: Sail Along Silvery Moon

This 1958 song was their only record in the Top 2000.
4. Jimi Hendrix (or should I say Jimi Hendrix Experience) should be in a list like this. Four of his songs were in the top 2000. Which one of them reached the highest spot?

Answer: All Along The Watchtower

It landed on number 146. 'Hey Joe' was at number 163, 'The Wind Cries Mary' at number 379 (his only record slipping down this list), and 'Purple Haze' was back at number 570.
5. Halfway across the list we see those old rockers who are still very much in it. The Rolling Stones, that's right. Which one of their 31 songs in the charts stood exactly at number 1000?

Answer: Time Is On My Side

The highest spot in the chart for the Stones was 'Angie' at number 12.
6. Dire Straits had only eight songs in the Top 2000, but it was the only group to have two songs in the Top 10. The first, at 9, was my personal choice, 'Brothers In Arms'. But what song ended higher up in the charts?

Answer: Private Investigations

'Brothers In Arms' dropped two places and was replaced by this song, which had landed at no 14 in the 2001 edition of the Top 2000.
7. The Beatles, of course, were best represented in these charts, with a staggering 54 songs. Yet, no song ended up in the Top 10. What was the highest spot for these Fab Four?

Answer: 15

It was 'Hey Jude'. Their second highest song was 'Yesterday' at number 30.
8. The 2000 songs were performed by 997 different artists or groups, of which 637 had just one song in the list. One of them was the oldest of the bunch: 'Summertime'. Which tragic female artist performed it?

Answer: Billie Holiday

It was a song from the opera 'Porgy and Bess'. From 1938, it means that there are 63 years between the oldest and the youngest song (Overcome from Live at number 107)!
9. Most songs in the Top 2000 were in English, quite a few in Dutch. What was the language of the first foreign-language song we got to hear shortly after the start of the 24-7 program?

Answer: Italian

Riccardo Cocciante had a hit with 'Sincerita' in 1984. It dropped 153 places to number 1993.
10. Down 219 places from 789 to 1008 from the year 1982 goes the song '1999'. Who was the artist?

Answer: Prince

Prince had a modest number of five songs in last year's Top 2000. In three songs he was with his Revolution ('Purple Rain', 'When Doves Cry', and 'Kiss'). In the other two he was on his own, performing '1999' and 'Sign O' The Times'.
11. One song I chose was a hit from 1977: 'Cherchez La Femme'. Who performed it?

Answer: Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band

'Cherchez La Femme' got to number 1201. DBOSB was the predecessor of Kid Creole and The Coconuts.
12. ABBA had 23 songs in these charts. Which one of them got to the highest spot?

Answer: Dancing Queen

At number 41, to be exact. 'The Day Before You Came' (my favorite) reached number 65, 'Fernando' got to 422, and 'Waterloo' reached number 607.
13. Every participant could add only one song that wasn't in the original list. I chose 'Jump (They Say)' from David Bowie. Where did this song end up?

Answer: It did not reach the Top 2000

David Bowie had 13 songs on his own in the Top 2000, the highest being the 1977 hit 'Heroes' at number 63. Apart from that, he had songs with Mick Jagger ('Dancing in the Streets'), Pat Metheny Group ('This Is Not America'), Queen ('Under Pressure'), Tina Turner ('Tonight'), and Lulu ('The Man Who Sold The World') in these massive charts.
14. What sixties song ended up in the highest position?

Answer: The House Of The Rising Sun

It got to number 6. In fact, this Animals' song is the oldest of the above-mentioned as it is from 1964, my year of birth, by the way. 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' from Procol Harum ended up at number 20. 'Yesterday' (Beatles!) got to number 30, and 'Satisfaction' got to number 75.
15. And finally: can you put these groups in the right order from third to first place?

Answer: Eagles, Deep Purple, Queen

And the songs were (not surprisingly): 'Hotel California', 'Child In Time', and 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. And they were stationary compared with the 2001 edition. This was the rest of the top 10: 4. Led Zeppelin: 'Stairway To Heaven' 5. Meat Loaf: 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light' 6. Animals: 'House Of The Rising Sun' 7. Dire Straits: 'Private Investigation's 8. Alan Parsons Project: 'Old And Wise' 9. Dire Straits: 'Brothers In Arms' 10. Doors: 'Riders On The Storm'. Thanks for taking this quiz!
