Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Verdi's last opera "Falstaff" was not his only comedy. Name Verdi's other comedy.

Answer: Un Giorno di Regno

It's a shame that Verdi waited until the end of his life to compose another comedy; "Un Giorno di Regno", while hardly a masterpiece, exhibits an engaging and playful sense of fun.
2. The name of the hero in "Il Trovatore" is

Answer: Manrico

One of Verdi's more rigorous tenor roles, Manrico's famous cabaletta "Di Quella Pira" did not contain the famous high C now demanded of any mortal foolish enough to try it.
3. "Un Ballo in Maschera" was originally set in what country before the infamous Austrian censors got their hands on it?

Answer: Sweden

Verdi's theme of the assasination of a king was deemed unacceptable, so the action was switched to colonial America, where the king was demoted to a humble count. Most productions today, however, switch the setting back to the original Sweden.
4. Another example of a king being demoted in rank, thanks to the censors, is the Duke of Mantua in which opera?

Answer: Rigoletto

Next to "Don Giovanni", the Duke is the most celebrated libertine in all opera. Even though he's a rat, how can you really hate someone who sings such great music as "La Donna e Mobile"?
5. Which of the following authors did not write a play which Verdi adapted to music?

Answer: Manzoni

Ever the perfectionist, Verdi spent almost as much time on the words to his operas as the music. He constantly harangued his librettists until the drama of the words fit his vision. Manzoni, while a great poet, and greatly admired by Verdi, never had the honor of having one of his works set by the master.
