Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Brown Eyed Girl": "Hey where did we go Days when the rains came Down in the _____ Playin' a new game"

Answer: hollow

Van Morrison just cracked the Top 10 with this classic track. It was his first solo effort after his first group Them broke up. He would have to wait until 1971 however for his highest charting U.S. single, which was the #9 hit "Domino".
2. "Dandelion": "Dandelion don't tell no lies Dandelion will make you wise Tell me if she laughs or cries _____ away dandelion"

Answer: blow

This #14 Rolling Stones' song is probably the closest they ever came to the "bubblegum" sound, but they pull it off quite nicely.
3. "For What It's Worth": "Paranoia strikes deep Into your life it will creep It starts when you're always _____"

Answer: afraid

Stephen Stills wrote this #7 Buffalo Springfield song as a response to the 1966-1967 Sunset Strip youth "riots" (not as a protest to the Vietnam War as many peope think). By the way, if you can't quite place the song, you may know it better as "Stop, Hey What's That Sound?"
4. "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)": "Saw a man walkin' upside down My TV's on the blink Made _____ look like a Boy Scout Sorry 'bout that, let it all hang out"

Answer: Galileo

This Hombres' two minute and six second #12 almost-novelty single was inspired by Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". John Cougar Mellencamp included "Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)" as a hidden bonus track on his 1989 "Big Daddy" release.
5. "A Whiter Shade Of Pale": "And so it was that later As the _____ told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly Turned a whiter shade of pale"

Answer: miller

Procol Harum's #5 international hit is considered by many to be the first progressive rock song. The fact that the song was based on a Johann Sebastian Bach composition, and has slightly cryptic lyrics would seem to support that view.
6. "Happy Jack": "Happy Jack wasn't old, but he was a man He lived in the _____ at the Isle of Man"

Answer: sand

The Who first cracked the Top 40 in the U.S. with "Happy Jack" which peaked at number 24. Listen for Pete Townshend saying "I saw ya!" to Keith Moon at the tail end of the song.
7. "San Franciscan Nights": "Strobe light's beam creates dreams Walls move, _____ do too On a warm San Franciscan night"

Answer: minds

Yes, Eric Burdon and the Animals' #9 hit "San Franciscan Nights" does remind us that the Summer of Love happened in 1967. Still a pretty groovy song though, don't you think?
8. "Incense And Peppermints": "Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind Dead kings, many things I can't _____"

Answer: define

Strawberry Alarm Clock (how's that for a 60's name?) went all the way to the top of the charts with this song. Chris Mumford who sings the lead vocal wasn't even a member of the band, he just happened to be at the session when it was recorded.
9. "Soul Man": "Coming to you On a dusty road Good loving I got a _____ load"

Answer: truck

Isaac Hayes co-wrote "Soul Man" with David Porter (he's not the Dave of Sam & Dave). The song stalled out at #2 on the pop chart but Sam & Dave stayed at #1 for seven weeks on the R&B chart.
10. "Itchycoo Park": "I feel inclined to blow my mind Get hung up feed the ducks with a bun They all come out to _____ about While I search for fun in the sun"

Answer: groove

The Small Faces ode to the Summer of Love went to #16. So that's it for the groovy year of 1967. "What a long strange trip it's been..." Oops! That's actually a lyric from 1970. Hmmm... that gives me an idea for my next quiz.
