Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the #10 hit of 1967? "Good sense, innocence, cripplin' mankind. Dead kings, many things I can't define. Occasions, persuasions clutter your mind. Incense and peppermints, the color of time."

Answer: Incense and Peppermints

"Incense and Peppermints" was the only real hit for 60's psychedelic band, The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Written by band members Mark Wertz, Ed King and John Carter, it did reach number one on the charts. Interestingly enough, the lead vocal on the recording was provided by Greg Munford, who was actually a member of the group Shapes of Sound.
2. What was the #9 hit of 1967? "I can't imagine anything that's better. The world is ours whenever we're together. There ain't a place I'd like to be instead of . . . __________ . . . down a crowded avenue. Doin' anything we like to do."

Answer: Groovin'

Written by Cavaliere and Brigati, "Groovin'" was the second number one hit for The Rascals. Their first number one was "Good Lovin'" in '66, which was released when the band called themselves The Young Rascals. They must have aged a bit in that first year of success!
3. What was the #8 hit of 1967? "I can't see me lovin' nobody but you, For all my life. When you're with me, baby the skies'll be blue, For all my life."

Answer: Happy Together

The Turtles underwent a few years of changing names and band members before they released this song in '67. There is some speculation that the band would have folded completely if this song hadn't become their first number one hit. It was written by Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, who were part of the group The Magicians.
4. What song was #7 in 1967? "I know I stand in line until you think you have the time to spend an evening with me. And if we go some place to dance I know that there's a chance you won't be leaving with me. Then afterwards we drop into a quiet little place and have a drink or two. And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like "I love you."

Answer: Something Stupid

Written by Carson Parks, "Something Stupid" was a number one hit for crooner Frank Sinatra and his daughter Nancy. It has often been referred to as "The Incest Song" though, because it was seen as a bit inappropriate for a father/daughter song.
5. What song was #6 in 1967? "You know that it would be untrue, You know that I would be a liar, If I was to say to you, Girl, we couldn't get much higher. Come on baby, light my fire."

Answer: Light My Fire

"Light My Fire" was the first number one hit for The Doors. The song was essentially written by Robbie Krieger, with only a line or two added by Morrison. This song contains the famous lyric "girl we couldn't get much higher", that caused such controversy on the Ed Sullivan Show. Asked to change the word "higher" for their performance, Morrison refused, and The Doors never again appeared on that show.
6. Which song was #6 in 1967? "It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day. I was out chopping cotton and my brother was baling hay. And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat. And Mama hollered out the back door "y'all remember to wipe your feet." And then she said "I got some news this morning from Choctaw Ridge, Today, Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge."

Answer: Ode to Billie Joe

"Ode to Billie Joe" was the first number one hit for Bobbie Gentry, who also wrote the song. It was originally released as the B side to "Mississippi Delta", but was played more by DJs who found that they liked it better.
7. What was the #4 song of 1967? "Who's peeking out from under a stairway, Calling a name that's lighter than air? Who's bending down to give me a rainbow? Everyone knows it's Windy."

Answer: Windy

Written by Ruthann Friedman, "Windy" was the second number one single for The Association. Their first number one hit, "Cherish", reached #2 on the BRI's countdown for 1966.
8. What was the #3 hit of 1967? "I thought love was only true in fairy tales, Meant for someone else but not for me. Love was out to get me, That's the way it seemed. Disappointment haunted all my dreams. Then I saw her face, now ___________."

Answer: I'm a Believer

"I'm a Believer" was the second number one hit for The Monkees. It was released during the first season of their hit television show, which ran for only 58 episodes. The very talented Neil Diamond wrote this catchy tune.
9. What was the #2 hit in 1967? "Give me a ticket for an aeroplane, I ain't got time to take a fast train. Lonely days are gone, I'm going home, Because my baby just wrote me a letter."

Answer: The Letter

This was the first, and I believe only, number one hit for The Box Tops, which sold over 4 million copies within weeks of its release. The band members were Alex Chilton, Bill Cunningham, John Evans, Danny Smythe and Gary Talley.
10. What was the #1 hit of 1967? "Those schoolgirl days of telling tales and biting nails are gone. But in my mind I know they will still live on and on. But how do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume? It isn't easy, but I'll try. If you wanted the sky I would write across the sky in letters, That would soar a thousand feet high ________________."

Answer: To Sir With Love

"To Sir With Love" hit number one on the American charts for five weeks running. Written by Mark Landon and Don Black for the movie of the same name, it was performed by Lulu. Lulu also had a role in this amazing film which starred Sidney Poitier.
Lulu had been in and around the British music scene since she was about 13 years old. In 1965, Britain's rock paper, "Melody Maker" named her Most Promising Newcomer in Show Business, when she was only 17 years old.
