Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which opera would you find the characters Susanna, Cherubino, Don Basilio, and Doctor Bartolo?

Answer: The Marriage of Figaro

Mozart really was a genius - he composed a sequel to "The Barber of Seville" thirty years before Rossini got round to the original! Don Basilio and Doctor Bartolo also appear in "The Barber"; the other two don't.
2. Which opera features the characters Vasek, Marenka, Kecal and Jenik?

Answer: The Bartered Bride

Smetana's delightful opera. Marenka is the "bride" of the title, apparently "bartered" by her sweetheart, Jenik, for 300 crowns.
3. The characters Golaud, Arkel, Yniold and Genevieve appear in which French opera?

Answer: Pelleas et Melisande

Debussy's only completed opera is a tragic story of adulterous love. There are many operas about this subject manner.
4. Which opera includes the characters Steva, Kostelnicka, Laca and Jano?

Answer: Jenufa

Janacek's first great masterpiece: a tale of thwarted love and infanticide that still manages to end in a spirit of forgiveness and optimism.
5. Which opera would you be watching if you saw the characters Anne Trulove, Nick Shadow, Mother Goose and Baba the Turk?

Answer: The Rake's Progress

By Stravinsky, with a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, inspired by Hogarth's series of paintings.
6. Which famous tear-jerking opera features the characters Rodolfo, Musetta, Marcello and Mimi?

Answer: La Boheme

By Puccini - and also by Leoncavallo, whose earlier version is justifiably eclipsed by Puccini, but is nevertheless worth a look if you ever get a chance.
7. Which opera's characters include Leonore, Florestan, Rocco and Marzelline?

Answer: Fidelio

Beethoven's only opera; unless you count the early draft "Leonore", occasional performances of which only serve to indicate why Beethoven was right to keep working on it.
8. Don Jose, Escamillo, Frasquita and Micaela appear in which opera?

Answer: Carmen

This is by Bizet. A failure at its first performance, now arguably the most popular of all operas.
9. Which opera includes such characters as Sid, Nancy, Florence Pike and Miss Wordsworth?

Answer: Albert Herring

By Benjamin Britten. A sharp, funny satire on morals and manners in an English village.
10. Which Wagner opera features the characters Siegmund, Wotan, Hunding and Fricka?

Answer: Die Walkure

All four choices together make up Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen". Wotan and Fricka appear in more than one of the operas, but Siegmund and Hunding are in "Die Walkure" only.
11. You may be surprised to hear that there is an opera featuring Mao Tse-Tung, Henry Kissinger, Chou En-Lai and Chiang Ch'ing. What is it called?

Answer: Nixon in China

John Adams' highly successful and much-performed modern opera, rare in taking recent history as its subject.
12. In which opera would you find Octavian, Faninal, Sophie and Baron Ochs?

Answer: Der Rosenkavalier

By Richard Strauss. Although set in Vienna and infectiously soaked in waltz tunes and rhythms, "Rosenkavalier" should not be confused with anything by his namesake Johann.
13. Leonora, Azucena, Manrico and Count Luna appear in which popular opera?

Answer: Il Trovatore

Verdi's opera, to perform which you simply need, in Enrico Caruso's words, "the four best singers in the world".
14. Which opera features the characters King Arthur, Morgan le Fay, The Green Knight and A Fool?

Answer: Gawain

By Harrison Birtwistle. Even if you've never seen it (and you should if you ever get a chance), you ought to have got the answer by a process of elimination!
15. In which opera do the characters Countess Geschwitz, Doctor Schon, Alwa and Schigolch appear?

Answer: Lulu

By Alban Berg. Incomplete at the time of his death in 1935, the last act was later orchestrated by Friedrich Cerha and the completed opera first performed in Paris in 1979.
