Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. General Knowledge: What is another name for Yasgur's farm? (Hint: it was mentioned in a song later sung by one of day 3's performers)

Answer: the Garden

The song "Woodstock", written by Joni Mitchell (who was not at Woodstock herself) and performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, states:
"...we are stardust/we are golden/and we've got to get ourselves/back to the Garden..."
2. Here's a tricky one: What was the original time set for the music to begin on Friday?

Answer: 4:00 pm

According to a handbill handed out advertising the festival, music was slated to begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, August 15. It actually began at 5:07 pm (the stage wasn't even ready by then!) and ran until mid-morning on Monday, August 19. (www.woodstock69.com)
3. It was day 1, the first set. No other acts were ready. How long did Richie Havens end up playing?

Answer: 3 hours

Richie Havens ended up playing for 3 hours. Since the New York Thruway was closed, the next acts could not get to the site. Chip Monck forced impromptu performances by Country Joe McDonald (who performed his infamous "Gimme an F" cheer) and John Sebastian (who was tripping out at the time). The rest of the performers had to be flown in on helicopters.
4. Who was not one of the announcers at Woodstock?

Answer: Wood Chuck

Wavy Gravy is known for his statement, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000."
Chip Monck is famous for his warning, "The brown acid that is circulating around us isn't specifically too good."
John Morris was the voice of reason during the deluge of rain that fell on day 3.
Wood Chuck doesn't exist (although it would be a pretty groovy nickname).
5. Which of the following songs was not performed by Arlo Guthrie?

Answer: Birthday of the Sun

"Birthday of the Sun" was performed by Melanie Safka, just prior to Arlo Guthrie's performance. "Amazing Grace", "Walking Down The Line" and "Coming Into Los Angeles" were the only songs performed by Arlo at Woodstock.
6. Who was the last to perform before the rainstorm kicked up?

Answer: Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker had just finished "With a Little Help From my Friends". The storm clouds blew in, and people were urged away from the stage and away from the towers. It was John Morris who attempted to calm the crowd as the rainstorm began. It rained for over an hour.
7. How many people did Yasgur expect to go to Woodstock?

Answer: 40,000

Yasgur said of the festival in 1971: "The worst thing about Woodstock was that there were just too many. I wouldn't have done it if I knew there were going to be half a million instead of 40,000...I have no right to have any kind of affair that would block vital services from reaching my neighbors." (www.yasgurroad.com) The organizers were expecting up to 100,000.
8. According to an article in the New York Times, as read by one of the announcers, how many people were arrested?

Answer: 75

The announcer, Muskrat, recited the article, "'The crowd was well behaved, even though about 75 persons in the area were arrested mostly on posessing narcotics' ...oh, bummer, bummer."
9. Into how many days did Woodstock last (that is, what was the actual duration of the event)?

Answer: 4 days

The peace and music at Woodstock lasted into four days. Day Four featured three groups: the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Sha-Na-Na and Jimi Hendrix. The festival ended mid-morning.
10. What were the last words uttered at Woodstock, according to the "Woodstock Nation" LP?

Answer: "Brother, this is far out."

According to woodstockproject.com, as well as the 'Woodstock Nation' LP, the final words spoken at Woodstock were "Brother, this is far out." After many thanks to the organizers of the concert and a round of applause, the words concluded the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Fair. These words summarize the mood of the concert that was beyond imagination from the start.
