Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original 1969 Woodstock festival took place in Bethel, New York. Where did the 1994 event take place though?

Answer: Saugerties, New York

Although both the original 1969 event and this 1994 reincarnation went under the name Woodstock, neither actually took place in Woodstock.
Of the two though, Woodstock '94 was closer, as Saugerties is just nine miles from Woodstock, while Bethel is actually 46 miles away.
Woodstock '94 was not the first brush with music fame for the town of Saugerties, as in 1967, Ric Danko of The Band rented a house here which was affectionately known as "Big Pink" due to its colouring.
This house was where Bob Dylan and The Band recorded the album, "The Basement Tapes" (officially released 1975) and the house became a part of rock history thanks to The Band's 1968 album, "Music from Big Pink".
2. On day one of Woodstock '94, which band known for tracks such as "Far Behind" (1994) and "It's Alright" (1998) played a cover of the Jimi Hendrix song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" (1968)?

Answer: Candlebox

Seattle based Candlebox, led by Kevin Martin, put in many hours gigging before success came their way. On the road to playing Woodstock '94 they were the support act on tours by Metallica and Rush as well as guesting at shows from Aerosmith and Radiohead.
At the Woodstock gig, the band played hits such as "You", "Far Behind" and "Cover Me" (all 1994) before closing with their Hendrix tribute.
3. On day two of Woodstock '94, Shannon Hoon took to the stage wearing his girlfriend's dress and wearing barrettes in his hair. For which band was Hoon the frontman?

Answer: Blind Melon

Many commentators have speculated that Hoon was possibly under the influence of something when he took to the stage, and he didn't do much to dissuade them in post performance interviews, although he did claim he got the dress from Lemonheads vocalist Evan Dando.
Whatever Hoon was on, the band turned in a great set including "Tones of Home" (1992), "No Rain" (1993) and a cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" (1970).
Sadly, just 14 months after Woodstock '94, Hoon died aged 28 from a cocaine overdose.
4. Which band, who also played at Woodstock '69, had a sense of deja vu as they sang "Deja Vu" (1970)?

Answer: Crosby, Stills and Nash

"Deja Vu" (1970) was originally a track by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young but missing Neil Young wasn't going to stop CSN performing all the tracks that the crowd expected. John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful proved to be an adequate replacement and provided some fantastic harmonica accompaniment.
CSN also played tracks such as "Wooden Ships" (1969), "Southern Cross" (1982) and of course "Marrakesh Express" (1969) before closing their set with what else but a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" (1970).
5. With a setlist that included several songs from Bad Company and Free, who led an all-star band on the Woodstock '94 south stage on Sunday night?

Answer: Paul Rodgers

Paul Rodgers was vocalist for both Bad Company and Free, and his bandmate from Free, bass player Andy Fraser, was part of his band at Woodstock '94.
Other members of the band, dubbed the Paul Rodgers Rock and Blues Revue included Neal Schon and Jason Bonham and guitarist Slash who played on their covers of "I Don't Live Today", originally done by Jimi Hendrix in 1967, and Albert King's "The Hunter" (1967).
6. Invited to appear at the original Woodstock, which artist declined but did play one of the stand out sets of Woodstock '94? "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", you can get this.

Answer: Bob Dylan

All listed were invited to play Woodstock '69 and all turned it down for various reasons, but in 1994, Bob Dylan finally played Woodstock.
With a huge back catalogue to choose from, I have often wondered how an artist such as Dylan manages to choose the dozen or so songs to make for a memorable performance, but he managed it perfectly.
His set list included "Just Like a Woman" (1966), "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" (1965), "Highway 61 Revisited" (1965) and "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" (1966) and in typical Dylan fashion, the day was all about the music.
He walked onto the stage (an hour and a half late) and proceeded to play with incredible intensity for just over an hour before leaving again. No words of greeting at the start and no words of thanks at the end, just an hour of great, solid musicianship.
7. On the Sunday of Woodstock '94 six year old Clara Balzary sang the start of the American national anthem, dressed as Jimi Hendrix was at Woodstock '69. Clara's dad is a member of which band, who were all also dressed as Hendrix?

Answer: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Clara's famous dad is Michael Balzary, better known as Flea, bass player for Red Hot Chili Peppers.
When RHCP initially took to the stage, they were dressed in lightbulb costumes, which were bright enough to light up the mosh pit activities, although they discarded these outfits after performing "Give It Away" (1991).
They took to the stage for their encore all dressed as Hendrix, circa Woodstock '69, complete with afro wigs, and after destroying their guitars in a manner reminiscent of The Who, Flea led Clara out to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" (1814).
8. Gospel group The Sisters of Glory, performed on Sunday at Woodstock '94. Where was their next gig after Woodstock '94?

Answer: The Vatican in front of Pope John Paul II

The Sisters of Glory comprised legends of music Thelma Houston, CeCe Peniston, Phoebe Snow and Albertina Walker and were brought together by author and vocalist Lois Walden who also sang with the group.
They were formed originally to perform a one-off gig to benefit charity as part of a programme entitled "Gospel Music: From the Church to the Charts" but after turning in a much lauded performance, were contacted by Woodstock '94 organisers to appear at the festival.
Their performance at Woodstock '94 was just as good as their debut, and the call came through from the Vatican, leading to the ladies taking part in "Christmas at the Vatican II" in front of the pontiff in December 1994.
The Sisters of Glory released their debut album, "Good News in Hard Times" in 1995.
9. Which artist performed last on Sunday night to close Woodstock '94?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

All of the artists listed played at Woodstock '94 but it was the wonderful Peter Gabriel who was given the honour of closing the show.
"Red Rain" (1986), "Solsbury Hill" (1977) and "Sledgehammer" (1986) were all aired and there were two fantastic duets with Youssou N'Dour on "Shakin' The Tree" (1989) and "In Your Eyes" (1986) before "Biko" (1980) closed the set.
Gabriel's set was praised by many music critics as one of the highlights of the whole weekend and the chants of Biko went on well into the wee hours, long after the steam coming from the front of the stage has dispersed.
10. Which official clown of the Grateful Dead not only was an announcer at the original Woodstock but was also the MC at Woodstock '94?

Answer: Wavy Gravy

Wavy Gravy, birth name Hugh Romney Jr, is quite probably the most famous hippie/counter culture clown ever. As well as making announcements at the 1969 event, he also headed up the security team known as the "Please Force" in reference to their polite interactions with festival goers.

In 1999, at Woodstock '99, he once again acted as master of ceremonies to become the only person to appear at all three Woodstock festivals.
