Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. THONLYEE

Answer: Only in Thee

Cyberhymnal.org reports Thomas O. Chisholm was a Methodist minister who wrote more than 1,200 poems with about 800 of them being set to music.
"Chisholm was educated in a small country school, and became its teacher at age 16," the Website reports. "At age 21, he became associate editor of the weekly newspaper, The Franklin Favorite."
The Website goes on to report Chisholm became a Christian in 1893 and moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he served as editor of the Pentecostal Herald. He also served as a minister for a while in Scottsville, Kentucky.

Here are the words to the hymn 'Only in Thee':

"Only in Thee, O Savior mine,
Dwelleth my soul in peace divine,
Peace that the world, though all combine,
Never can take from me.
Pleasures of earth, so seemingly sweet,
Fail at the last my longings to meet;
Only in Thee my bliss is complete,
Only, dear Lord, in Thee!

Only in Thee a radiance bright,
Shines like a beacon in the night,
Guiding my pilgrim bark aright,
Over life's trackless sea.
Only in Thee, when troubles molest,
When with temptation I am oppressed,
There is a sweet pavilion of rest,
Only, dear Lord, in Thee!

Only in Thee, when days are drear,
When neither sun nor stars appear,
Still I can trust and feel no fear,
Sing when I cannot see.
Only in Thee, whatever betide,
All of my need is freely supplied;
There is no help nor helper beside,
Only, dear Lord, in Thee!

Only in Thee, dear Savior, slain,
Losing Thy life my own to gain,
Trusting, I'm cleansed from ev'ry stain;
Thou art my only plea.
Only in Thee my heart will delight,
Till in that land where cometh no night
Faith will be lost in heavenly sight,
Only, dear Lord, in Thee!"
2. I WILL PASS YOU

Answer: I Will Pass Over You

Daniel W. Whittle was born in 1840 in Chicopee Falls, Mass. After serving in the American Civil War, Whittle became treasurer of the Elgin Watch Company in Chicago, according to Cyberhymnal.org. "In less than ten years, though, he entered the evangelism field," the Website reports. "During this period, he worked with musicians Phillip Bliss and James McGranahan."

He is credited with writing a number of hymns with one of the most popular being 'I Know Whom I Have Believed'.

'I Will Pass Over You' is based on events documented in Exodus 12, which led to the Israelites celebrating Passover.

Here are the words to the Gospel hymn 'I Will Pass Over You':

"When God of old the way of life
Would teach to all His own,
He placed them safe beyond the reach
Of death, by Blood alone.

Refrain

It is His Word, God's precious Word,
It stands forever true;
"When I the Lord shall see the blood,
I will pass over you."

By Christ, the sinless Lamb of God,
The precious blood was shed,
When He fulfilled God's holy Word,
And suffered in our stead.

Refrain

O soul, for thee salvation thus
By God is freely giv'n;
The blood of Christ atones for sin,
And makes us meet for Heav'n.

Refrain

The wrath of God that was our due,
Upon the Lamb was laid;
And by the shedding of His blood,
The debt for us was paid.

Refrain

How calm the Judgment hour shall pass
To all who do obey
The Word of God, and trust the Blood,
And make that Word their stay!

Refrain"
3. FOUNDED THEE

Answer: Founded on Thee

Samuel F. Smith was born in Boston in 1808 and graduated in an arts program at Harvard. The Website Hymnary.org reports in 1832 he became a Baptist pastor and served as editor of the Baptist Missionary Magazine.

"With Baron Stow he prepared the Baptist [hymn] collection known as The Psalmist, published in 1843, to which he contributed several hymns," Hymnary.org reports. "The Psalmist is the most creditable and influential of the American Baptist collections to the present day."

Here are the words to the hymn 'Founded on Thee':

"Founded on Thee, our only Lord,
On Thee, the everlasting Rock,
Thy Church shall stand, as stands Thy Word,
Nor fear the storm, nor dread the shock.

For Thee our waiting spirits yearn,
For Thee this house of praise we rear;
To Thee with longing hearts we turn:
Come, fix Thy glorious presence here.

Come, with Thy Spirit and Thy power,
The Conqueror, once the Crucified;
Our God, our Strength, our King, our Tower,
Here plant Thy throne, and here abide.

Accept the work our hands have wrought;
Accept, O God, this earthly shrine;
Be Thou our Rock, our life, our thought,
And we, as living temples, Thine."
4. FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS ME FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS FRIENDS

Answer: Friends All Around Me

According to the Website Hymntime.com, Harry D. Loes was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1892. Hymntime.com reports Loes studied at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, the American Conservatory of Music, the Metropolitan School of Music and the Chicago Musical College. "From 1927-39, he served in musical positions in Baptist churches in Okmulgee and Muskogee, Oklahoma," Hymntime reports. "From 1939 to retirement, he served on the music faculty at the Moody Bible Institute."

The hymn 'Friends All Around Me' is also known as 'All Things in Jesus'.

Here are the words to 'Friends All Around Me':

"Friends all around me are trying to find
What the heart yearns for, by sin undermined;
I have the secret, I know where 'tis found:
Only true pleasures in Jesus abound.

Refrain

All that I want is in Jesus.
He satisfies, joy He supplies;
Life would be worthless without Him;
All things in Jesus I find.

Some carry burdens whose weight has for years
Crushed them with sorrow and blinded with tears.
Yet One stands ready to help them just now,
If they will humbly in penitence bow.

Refrain

No other name thrills the joy chords within,
And through none else is remission of sin.
He knows the pain of the heart sorely tried.
Both need and want will by Him be supplied.

Refrain

Jesus is all this poor world needs today.
Blindly they strive, for sin darkens their way.
O to draw back the grim curtains of night,
One glimpse of Jesus and all will be bright!

Refrain"
5. T S I R H C F O S R E I D L O S

Answer: Soldiers of Christ Arise

Charles Wesley wrote more than 6,000 hymns and along with his brother John founded the Christian movement that became known as the Methodist Church. He was born in 1707 in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England and died in 1788 in London, England. According to the Website Hymntime.org, Wesley is buried at Marylebone Parish Church, London.

Here are the words to the hymn 'Soldiers of Christ Arise':

"Soldiers of Christ, arise, and put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies through His eternal Son.
Strong in the Lord of hosts, and in His mighty power,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts is more than conqueror.

Stand then in His great might, with all His strength endued,
But take, to arm you for the fight, the panoply of God;
That, having all things done, and all your conflicts passed,
Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone and stand entire at last.

Stand then against your foes, in close and firm array;
Legions of wily fiends oppose throughout the evil day.
But meet the sons of night, and mock their vain design,
Armed in the arms of heavenly light, of righteousness divine.

Leave no unguarded place, no weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace, and fortify the whole;
Indissolubly joined, to battle all proceed;
But arm yourselves with all the mind that was in Christ, your Head.

But, above all, lay hold on faith's victorious shield;
Armed with that adamant and gold, be sure to win the field:
If faith surround your heart, Satan shall be subdued,
Repelled his every fiery dart, and quenched with Jesus' blood.

Jesus hath died for you! What can His love withstand?
Believe, hold fast your shield, and who shall pluck you from His hand?
Believe that Jesus reigns; all power to Him is giv'n:
Believe, till freed from sin's remains; believe yourselves to Heav'n.

To keep your armor bright, attend with constant care,
Still walking in your Captain's sight, and watching unto prayer.
Ready for all alarms, steadfastly set your face,
And always exercise your arms, and use your every grace.

Pray without ceasing, pray, your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey and call upon the Lord;
To God your every want in instant prayer display,
Pray always; pray and never faint; pray, without ceasing, pray!

In fellowship alone, to God with faith draw near;
Approach His courts, besiege His throne with all the powers of prayer:
Go to His temple, go, nor from His altar move;
Let every house His worship know, and every heart His love.

To God your spirits dart, your souls in words declare,
Or groan, to Him Who reads the heart, the unutterable prayer:
His mercy now implore, and now show forth His praise,
In shouts, or silent awe, adore His miracles of grace.

Pour out your souls to God, and bow them with your knees,
And spread your hearts and hands abroad, and pray for Zion's peace;
Your guides and brethren bear for ever on your mind;
Extend the arms of mighty prayer, in grasping all mankind.

From strength to strength go on, wrestle and fight and pray,
Tread all the powers of darkness down and win the well fought day.
Still let the Spirit cry in all His soldiers, 'Come!'
Till Christ the Lord descends from high and takes the conquerors home."
6. MYHEGODBEAD

Answer: God Be In My Head

H. Walford Davies was a British composer who was knighted in 1922. He did everything from serving as a professor of music to doing special radio broadcasts for the BBC, according to Wikipedia. The Website reports Davies held the title Master of the King's Music from 1934 until 1941.

Here are the words to the Gospel hymn 'God Be in My Head':

"God be in my head, and in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes, and in my looking;
God be in my mouth, and in my speaking;
God be in my heart, and in my thinking;
God be at mine end, and at my departing."
7. SUNSOUTHINE

Answer: Out in the Sunshine

When it comes to old-time Gospel hymns, Fanny Crosby is the queen. According to Wikipedia, she wrote more than 8,000 hymns, but some other Websites suggest the total is higher as a large number of her songs were published under pseudonyms. Crosby lost her eyesight when she was only six weeks old. She is quoted as saying a gigantic gift awaited her because when she got to Heaven, her sight would be restored and the first face she would see would be that of Jesus.

Here are the words to the hymn 'Out in the Sunshine':

"Out in the sunshine of infinite love,
Breathing the fragrance of Eden above;
I am so happy, O Savior divine,
Living or dying, to know I am Thine.

Refrain

Yes, I am Thine, Lord, I am Thine,
Living or dying, I know I am Thine.

Out in the sunshine, though shadows may fall,
Yet will I thank Thee and praise Thee for all;
Never, no, never my heart shall repine,
Living or dying, I know I am Thine.

Refrain

Out in the sunshine sweet music I hear,
Tenderly wafting a song on my ear;
Oh, what a blessèd assurance is mine,
Living or dying, I know I am Thine.

Refrain

Out in the sunshine by faith I can see,
Mansions in glory preparing for me;
O my Redeemer, what rapture is mine,
Living or dying, I know I am Thine.

Refrain"
8. HIAMHAPPYIM

Answer: I am Happy in Him

According to Wikipedia, Edwin O. Excell was born in 1851 and was a star in the evangelical church community. Wikipedia describes him as "a prominent American publisher, composer, song leader, and singer of music for church, Sunday school, and evangelistic meetings during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries." The Website goes on to state Excell's "1909 stanza selection and arrangement of Amazing Grace became the most widely used and familiar setting of that hymn by the second half of the twentieth century." He is credited with writing more than 2,000 hymns.

Here are the words to 'I am Happy in Him':

"My soul is so happy in Jesus,
For He is so precious to me;
His voice it is music to hear it,
His face it is Heaven to see.

Refrain

I am happy in Him,
I am happy in Him;
My soul with delight
He fills day and night
For I am happy in Him.

He sought me so long ere I knew Him,
When wand'ring afar from the fold;
Safe home in His arms He hath bro't me,
To where there are pleasures untold.

Refrain

His love and His mercy surround me,
His grace like a river doth flow;
His Spirit, to guide and to comfort,
Is with me wherever I go.

Refrain

They say I shall some day be like Him,
My cross and my burden lay down;
Till then I will ever be faithful,
In gathering gems for His crown.

Refrain"
9. I BUILDED THE ROCK

Answer: I Builded on the Rock

It appears not much is known about C. Rice. In fact the Website Cyberhymnal.org invites readers to submit information if they know her first name or when the hymn 'I Builded on the Rock' was published.

The hymn is believed to have been inspired by Matthew 7:24-25 in which Jesus is quoted as saying, "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock."

Here are the words to the hymn 'I Builded on the Rock':

"I builded on the Rock, on the Rock of God,
Builded on the Rock, Christ Jesus;
I dug down deep and builded on the Rock,
Builded on the Rock of God.

Refrain

I hold not the Rock, but the Rock holds me,
The Rock holds me, the Rock holds me;
I rest on the Rock, and the Rock holds me,
Resting on the Rock of God.

Why should I fear when the winds sweep by?
Builded on the Rock, Christ Jesus;
Or shaken be when the waves roll high?
Builded on the Rock of God.

Refrain

Hush, raging billows at His command,
Builded on the Rock, Christ Jesus;
Oh, peace be still 'neath His loving hand!
Builded on the Rock of God.

Refrain

Praise God for our foundation sure!
Builded on the Rock, Christ Jesus;
No storms can harm our home secure,
Builded on the Rock of God.

Refrain"
10. I LAY MY SINS JESUS

Answer: I Lay My Sins On Jesus

Horatius Bonar was born at Edinburgh, in 1808. He wrote more than 100 hymns, many of which are still performed in evangelical churches around the world. Some of the more popular titles include 'Come, Lord, and Tarry Not'; 'I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say' and 'Thy way, not mine, O Lord'. Bonar died in Edinburgh in 1889.

Here are the words to the hymn 'I Lay My Sins On Jesus':

"I lay my sins on Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God;
He bears them all, and frees us from the accursèd load;
I bring my guilt to Jesus, to wash my crimson stains
White in His blood most precious, till not a stain remains.

I lay my wants on Jesus; all fullness dwells in Him;
He heals all my diseases, He doth my soul redeem:
I lay my griefs on Jesus, my burdens and my cares;
He from them all releases, He all my sorrows shares.

I rest my soul on Jesus, this weary soul of mine;
His right hand me embraces, I on His breast recline.
I love the Name of Jesus, Immanuel, Christ, the Lord;
Like fragrance on the breezes His Name abroad is poured.

I long to be like Jesus, strong, loving, lowly, mild;
I long to be like Jesus, the Father's holy Child:
I long to be with Jesus, amid the heavenly throng,
To sing with saints His praises, to learn the angels' song."
