Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the flag generally associated with pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries?

Answer: The Jolly Roger

The Jolly Roger usually consists of a skull and two diagonal bones, but some pirates used more elaborate versions including various red flags and versions of the Jolly Roger with up to three skulls. There have also been occasional reports of ships (especially submarines) in regular navies sometimes flying the Jolly Roger, usually as an act of triumphalism or in a dare-devil spirit.
2. Which pirate hunter later became a pirate himself?

Answer: Sir Francis Drake

Operating under the English flag, Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596) was hired to hunt down notorious pirates and later pillaged along the Spanish Seas. He was also the first Englishman to sail round the world. He was second-in-command of the English fleet that fought the Spanish Armada (1588).
3. What was the nickname of the notorious buccaneer who scourged the West Indies?

Answer: Blackbeard

Blackbeard was dreaded in the West Indies for consistently robbing the rich shipping ships that would travel along its sea.

His real name is unknown but he is most commonly known as Edward Teach and not much is known about him during his early life.
4. Which former pirate burned down Panama in 1665?

Answer: Sir Henry Morgan

Sir Henry Morgan was an admiral, pirate hunter, and a pirate himself, most notoriously known for raiding the Spanish settlements and burning down Panama. His father was descended from the Tredegar Morgans (of South Wales) and much of his family consisted of high-ranking personnel in the English army.
5. Which of the following was a female pirate in the 18th century?

Answer: Anne Bonny

The notorious "Calico" Jack did not know at first when Anne Bonny and Mary Read joined his pirate crew disguised as males.

When he did find out, he did not kick them off the ship but rather embraced and accepted them, mostly due to their fearlessness and skills in combat.
6. Which of the following holidays involving pirates is real?

Answer: International Talk Like a Pirate Day

Arghhhh me hearties! You'd better be talking like me on International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It comes every September 19th.
7. A pirate's telescope was called a peep glass.

Answer: False

The actual term was spyglass! The term "spyglass" referred to when the pirates would observe or "spy" on other ships that were potential targets for plunder.
8. Piracy is a broad term for stealing anything.

Answer: True

The answer is true (obviously). There are many forms of piracy, from illegally downloading songs onto your iPod to hijacking ships, it all considered piracy.
9. What was considered the 'golden age of piracy'?

Answer: 1650's to 1730's

1650 to 1730 contained the most outbreaks and thievery of all the years of pirating. This is mostly due to many valuable cargo ships operating in the ocean and the ineffective government protection of ships.
10. On a treasure map, what would tell you where the treasure is. (You will see this in most TV shows and movies about pirates).

Answer: An X

I'm sure you heard it before, "X marks the spot"!
