Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On January 26th 2009 a set of octuplets were born to Nadya Suleman. At the time of their birth these babies were only the second set of living octuplets to be born within the United States. In addition to sharing a birthday, the Suleman octuplets have another thing in common but what is it?

Answer: They all have the same middle name

In their birth order the Suleman babies are: Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Makai, Josiah, Jeremiah and Jonah - who all share the middle name Angel. At the time of their birth the babies weighed between 3lb 1oz and 1lb 12oz, with the biggest baby being Isaiah and the smallest Makai.

The octuplets are not the only set of multiples in the family. Nadya Suleman also has a set of fraternal twins, Caleb Kai and Calyssa Arielle, who were born in 2006.
2. When the Suleman babies turned one week old, they surpassed the previous record holders for the longest surviving complete set of octuplets. The previous holders were born in December 1988 but their status as a complete set was lost when one of the babies passed away aged one week. Can you name the previous record holders?

Answer: Chukwu

The Chukwu octuplets were born in Texas to Nkem Chukwu and Lyke Louis Udobi. The octuplets are: Chukwuebuka Mkemjika (Ebuka), Chidinma Anulika (Chidi), Chigecherem Nwabugwu (Echeram), Chimaijem Otito (Chima), Chijindu Chidera (Odera), Chukwubuikem Maduabuchi (Ikem), Chijioke Chinedum (Jioke) and Chinagorom Chidiebere (Gorom).

The first of the octuplets, Ebuka, was born December 8th 1998 - 15 weeks premature. Ebuka was not joined by her siblings until December 20th when they were delivered via a c-section. A week later, on December 27th, Odera passed away.

In 2002 the Chukwu octuplets were joined by a baby sister Divine Favour. Her name was chosen by her mother who believed that God did her a favour by giving her back the daughter she had lost.
3. On November 19th 1997, the first set of septuplets to survive past infancy were born, nine weeks prematurely. By the end of her pregnancy, the mother of these babies was carrying around 19lb of baby weight. Which septuplet set is this?

Answer: McCaughey

The McCaughey parents, Bobbi and Kenny, already had a daughter Mikayla Marie, who was born in 1996, at the time of the septuplets birth. The babies were conceived with the aid of fertility treatment, and, when it was discovered that Bobbi was carrying seven babies, a selective reduction was offered to the couple. They refused.

The McCaughey septuplets are: Kenneth (Kenny) Robert, Alexis May, Natalie Sue, Kelsey Ann, Nathan Roy, Brandon James and Joel Steven. With multiple births there is an increased risk of Cerebral Palsy which Alexis and Nathan both had. Nathan underwent spinal surgery in 2005 in order to help his ability to walk.

Occasionally Bobbi and Kenny speak at pro-life events as well as opposing selective reduction. Bobbi McCaughey has been quoted as saying "Well, come to our house, and tell me which four I shouldn't have had!" when discussing selective reduction.
4. One set of sextuplets have been the center of a television show from a very early age. These babies were born in 2004 and joined not only their parents but also a set of twin girls. The babies were given a group nickname by the doctors and nurses who delivered them but what was it?

Answer: Hershey Kisses

The sextuplets were nicknamed the Hershey Kisses because they were born in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Of course these babies are a part of the Gosselin family who appear in the show "Jon and Kate Plus Eight".

The older Gosselin girls are Madelyn Kate and Cara Irene Gosselin who were born on October 20th. The sextuplets in their birth order are: Alexis Faith, Hannah Joy, Aaden Jonathan, Collin Thomas, Leah Hope and Joel Kevin.

The sextuplets were delivered via c-section in a time span of three minutes with more than 50 specialists in attendance.
5. In 2009, Ireland saw its first recorded sextuplet birth when Nuala and Austin Conway delivered their six babies. The babies were conceived after Nuala took a mild fertility drug in order to stimulate her ovaries. It was originally believed that she was expecting twins and it wasn't until three months before the birth that the additional four babies were discovered. Sadly at just two months old one of the babies passed away but which one?

Answer: Kerrie

Baby Kerrie Mae had been transferred, alongside one of her siblings, to a local hospital as she had been gaining weight and was considered to be one of the strongest of the Conway babies before she sadly lost her fight for life.

Kerrie's siblings were Ursula, Shannon, Karla, Austin and Eoghan. At birth the babies weighed between 1lb 7oz and 2lb 2oz.
6. The Dionne quintuplets were the first set of identical female quintuplets on record, as well as being the first documented set of five to survive their infancy. When the girls were only four months old they were removed from the care of their parents and were made wards of the provincial crown until the age of eighteen. The government had realised there was a great interest in the sisters and, as such, proceeded to set up a tourist industry. The sisters were placed in to compound with a outdoor playground designed to be a public observation gallery. What was the name of the Dionne's compound?

Answer: Dafoe Hospital and Nursery

It is estimated that around 6,000 people a day would visit the observation gallery in order to view the Dionne sisters. The girls father, Oliva, ran a concession and souvenir store opposite the compound. During their time in the compound the quints appeared in four Hollywood films.

The death of Yvonne Edouilda Marie, aged 67 in 2001, from cancer, left just two of the Dionne sisters still living - Annette Lillianne Marie and Cécile Marie Emilda. The first of the sisters to pass away was Émilie Marie Jeanne who was just 20 years old. She was a postulant at a convent and suffered from seizures. It was decided that she should not be left unattended but a nun, believing Émilie to be asleep, left her in order to attend mass. During the time she was away, Émilie suffered a seizure which caused her to roll on to her stomach and to suffocate herself. Almost fifteen years later Marie Reine Alma passed away alone in her apartment from an apparent blood clot to her brain. Marie's family became concerned about her when they did not hear from her for several days, it was only when her apartment window was broken by one of her brothers-in-law that her body was discovered.

In 1998 the sisters reached a monetary settlement with the Ontario government as compensation for what was perceived to be their exploitation.
7. In September 1998 in Woodland Hills, California, Shawna and Tony Brino became parents to quadruplets, Lorenzo, Zachary, Myrinda and Nikolas. The four youngsters were cast, aged five months old, as twin boys on a television show. Which television show featured the Brino quads?

Answer: 7th Heaven

For their first two seasons on the show, the Brino quads were used interchangeably in the roles of Sam and David Camden. However, by their third season on the show the children were all developing their own distinct looks. As a result it was decided that Lorenzo and Nikolas would be the main children in the roles with Myrinda and Zachary occasionally standing in if the twins were only supposed to be in the background of scenes. For the majority of episodes, Lorenzo appears in the role of Sam while Nikolas appears as David.

In 2007 Zachary appeared in two episodes of the television show "What About Brian" alongside Barry Watson who played Matt Camden in "7th Heaven".
8. There have been instances where a set of nine infants have been born at one time. When Zurina Mat Saad gave birth to a set of nontuplets on March 26th 1999 there had never been a recorded set of living nontuplets. Sadly, Zurina's nine did not survive either. In which country were these babies born?

Answer: Malaysia

The Saad nontuplets were Adam, Nuh, Idris, Soleh, Hud, Aishah, Khadijah, Fatimah and Umi Kalsom. Sadly the babies all passed away within six hours of their birth. The father of the Saad nontuplets is unknown.

In 1971 in Australia, Geraldine Boderick gave birth to nine babies on June 13th. Within this set there was five boys and four girls. All of the babies passed away within six days of their birth with baby Richard living the longest.
9. In 2008 Ghazala Khamis gave birth to septuplets. The babies are considered to be the fifth surviving set of seven babies in the world. However, prior to their birth the doctor involved with the case actually heard nine heartbeats meaning that two of the babies were lost in utero - as such it could be considered that these babies were actually a nontuplet set. The mother of these babies took fertility treatment in order to conceive. Why?

Answer: She wanted a son because she already had three daughters

The Khamis septuplets were born prematurely at 34 weeks and had to be placed in incubators in four separate hospitals. There is a lot of discrepancy regarding the birth weights of these septuplets, with some reports say that the largest baby weighed around 6lb 15oz and others stating the largest was only around 4lb 10oz.

The Khamis septuplets are: Mohammad (Hosni), Kareem (Mubarak), Bilal (Jamal), Yassin (Ala'a), Israa (Suzanne), Habiba (Khadija), Do'a (Jihan). For Ghazala Khamis wanting one son resulting in her getting four and another three daughters bringing her brood to ten children.
10. The first wife of Feodor Vassilyes, whose name is unknown, set the record for the most children born to a single woman - a total of 69, of which 67 survived infancy. Between 1725 and 1765 she gave birth a total of 27 times. She had 16 sets of twins and four sets of quadruplets. Based on this information how many sets of triplets did this woman have?

Answer: 7

I feel rather sorry for this woman because her name hasn't been recorded, yet her husband's has been. He was a peasent from Shuya, Russia who was alive between the years of 1707 and 1782. Following the wife that gave him his 69 children, Feodor married again. Evidence suggests that his second wife also gave birth to numerous sets of multiples. Mr Vassilyes must have been an extremely fertile man given he appears never to have conceived a single singleton!
