Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Morisot born?

Answer: Bourges

Berthe Morisot was born on January 14, 1841, in Bourges, France. Her family was quite well-off, and her father, Edme Tiburce Morisot, was a high-ranking civil servant.
2. Name one of Morisot's two sisters?

Answer: Edma

Berthe and Edma showed talent in drawing, and in 1855, Morisot's mother decided to further their knowledge of art.
3. Who was Morisot's FIRST art teacher?

Answer: Geoffrey-Alphonse Chocarne

Chocarne, an advocate of neo-classicism, taught the girls briefly and almost bored them away from art entirely.
4. Who was Morisot's SECOND art teacher?

Answer: Joseph Guichard

His interest in Romanticism and penchant for teaching new students allowed the girls to begin their artistic growth. He had them make drawings from casts of classical sculptures and took them to the Louvre to copy old master works. Berthe focused on the works of the Veronese. Guichard recognized the girls' immense talent and even wrote a letter to the Morisots' mother warning her of the implications of having her upper-class daughters becoming painters.
5. Who was Morisot's THIRD art teacher?

Answer: Achille Oudinot

The girls wanted to paint en plein air, so Guichard, their second art teacher, turned them over to Oudinot, who quickly turned Berthe and Edma over to Camille Corot (their fourth).
6. Who was Morisot's FOURTH art teacher?

Answer: Camille Corot

Corot was a pupil of Ingres and his calm, beautiful landscapes were very successful.
7. With what art movement is Morisot associated?

Answer: Impressionism

She was called the First Lady of Impressionism.
8. Who introduced Morisot to Edouard Manet?

Answer: Henri Fantin-Latour

Manet's art was very avant-garde, and works like 'Olympia' created quite an uproar in the Salon. Manet's art freed Berthe's art from Salon conventions, and for a while she was even dismayed by her art's similarity to Manet's.
9. Who did Morisot marry in December 1874?

Answer: Eugene Manet

Eugene was the brother of Edouard Manet. He was also a painter, but he did not agree with art that went against the establishment (like his brother's, and his wife's).
10. Why did Camille Pissarro punch a man out at an auction of Impressionist work?

Answer: the man called Morisot a whore

Yes, this really happened...it caused a huge brawl, and the paintings sold at horrible prices (surprisingly enough, Morisot's art did the best).
11. What was the only Impressionist exhibition that Morisot missed?

Answer: 4th

She missed it because she was giving birth to her daughter, Julie.
12. Morisot's favorite model was her daughter. Name her daughter?

One of Morisot's masterpieces was 'Julie Daydreaming.' The portrait of her daughter showed how Morisot perceived her child as growing up.
13. Morisot was good friends with an American Impressionist. Name her?

Answer: Mary Cassatt

At the 6th Impressionist exhibition, which was the first without many of the central Impressionists (like Monet and Renoir), Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot were considered the new leaders of the {avant-garde;} this was the first time women held that position.
14. Which of these did Morisot NOT paint?

Answer: In The Loge

In The Loge was by Mary Cassatt. Jeanne Pontillion was Morisot's niece.
15. What did Berthe Morisot die of?

Answer: pneumonia

Her death certificate stated that she had 'No Profession' because she was a woman. Even today, her central role in the Impressionist group is widely ignored.
