Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in a melting glacier in British Columbia, this iceman's name, 'Kwaday Dan Ts ìnchi', translates literally to what?

Answer: Long Ago Person Found

'Kwaday Dan Ts ìnchi' is the southern Tutchone language of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations name for the remains of the iceman discovered in the traditional territory of those peoples. The find was made in the Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Wilderness Park in British Columbia, near the Yukon. Three sheep hunters come across him, along with a walking stick and a fur (made from the skins of approximately 95 gophers) in 1999. Though the skull was missing, this was found in 2003.

The man was headed south-west along a valley, and would have crossed a glacier on his way. Examinations have established that he was a young man of between 17-22 years, and probably a hunter, from the spear and knife that were found nearby. As he was in good health, it was surmised that he died from an accident, around 1700 AD.

This question was excavated by Phoenix Rising member VegemiteKid.
2. Which Batman actor played the role of Iceman in the 1986 action film "Top Gun"?

Answer: Val Kilmer

Tom Cruise starred in "Top Gun" as Maverick. His chief rival was the cocky Iceman played by Val Kilmer. The two spend the movie vying for the best pilot in the class at the Navy's Top Gun school. Iceman finally wins the coveted title but later in real life combat, Maverick saves his life when he is outnumbered by enemy fighters. Anthony Edwards played Maverick's RIO who was killed in an accident at Top Gun. George Clooney was not in the film but did play Batman in the 1997 film "Batman & Robin". Kilmer played Batman in the 1993 movie "Batman Forever".

This question shot its way to the top courtesy Phoenix Rising member tazman6619, call sign Wolfman.
3. Richard Kuklinski was a serial killer who was nicknamed The Iceman. How did he earn this moniker?

Answer: Froze a victim to conceal time of death.

Kuklinski was convicted of 5 murders but claimed to have committed over 100. One of his associates did drive an ice cream truck, and reportedly suggested freezing victims. Kuklinski failed to allow the frozen victim to thaw completely so his attempted trick was a failure. The event led to his being named The Iceman by police. Books and movies have been made detailing his story; Kuklinski died in prison in 2006.

This question was investigated and found to be guilty by Phoenix Rising member pusdoc.
4. Who or what is Otzi the Iceman?

Answer: A mummy

Otzi is the remarkably well preserved "natural" mummy of a man believed to have lived between 3400 and 3100 BCE. Currently on display at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy, he was discovered on the Austrian/Italian border in the Otztal Alps, near Similaun mountain and Hauslabjoch. The place of discovery, in turn, has led to the nickname Otzi. He has also been called the Similaun Man.

The body was discovered by two German tourists, Helmut and Erika Simon, on the 19th September of 1991. It was so well preserved, their first instinct was that it was the remains of a recently deceased mountain climber. Five days later the body was examined by archaeologist Konrad Spindler at the University of Innsbruck and the truth was discovered.

This question was created for team Phoenix Rising by a well preserved pollucci19.
5. In the same year that Barack Obama was inaugurated president for the first time, professional poker player Jeffrey Lisandro, aka Iceman, won three WSOP bracelets and WSOP Player of the Year. Which year was this?

Answer: 2009

Lisandro accomplished all of this in the summer of 2009 at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas. Barack Obama was sworn in as President on January 20th of the same year. In a span of 21 days Lisandro played in five events, making four final tables and winning three bracelets. Even more impressive, his three bracelets all came in stud events: 7-Stud High, 7-Stud Hi-Lo, and 7-Stud Razz. That had never been done before.

His nickname Iceman has a couple of different explanations as to how it came about. One article claims it is because of his "seemingly cold and calculating disposition while playing cash games." (Bankrollmob.com June 29, 2009) But the more interesting story involves his penchant for chewing gum at the table to hide any possible tells. During his first summer playing in the WSOP he kept running out of gum so he would run to the corner store to get more. His favorite brand was "Ice" gum so the lady behind the counter started saying "Here comes the Iceman" and the name stuck. (The Sydney Morning Herald June 13, 2009 article by Joe Hachem)

6. With a play on the title of a Eugene O'Neill work, and set in a Klondike blizzard, this cartoon tells of Daffy Duck's vain attempts to trap furs for money - but at the wrong time of the year. And Bugs Bunny didn't help (he made a snow rabbit for Daffy to "catch"!). Then there was the avalanche...oops. Complete the name of the 1964 Warner Brothers cartoon: "The Iceman ___"

Answer: Ducketh

The cartoon was directed by Phil Monroe, Chuck Jones (uncredited) and Maurice Noble, and was voiced by Mel Blanc. Released on May 16, 1964, it was the last of the Warner Bros. short cartoons developed for theatrical release (until 1991), as television was starting to take over. It features many of the gags common to the Looney Toons genre, with a snowball of Daffy's making rolls down the hill, through a bear's cave and catapults high into the air, landing on Daffy. Bugs sings his signature "Baby Face" song. It runs for about six minutes (including credits!).

This question was concocted by Phoenix Rising Team member VegemiteKid.
7. Robert "Bobby" Drake is known as "Iceman" in the Marvel Comics' universe and is a member of which of the following super-hero teams?

Answer: The X-Men

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Iceman is one of the original members of the X-Men and, as such, makes his first appearance in "The X-Men #1" (September 1963). Bobby Drake was born in Long Island, New York, a mutant who has the ability to manipulate water vapour in the air around him. He can also turn his own body to ice. His powers manifested themselves at a young age when he froze a local bully. This caused an angry reaction from the locals and Bobby was thrown in jail, for his own protection. He was broken out by Scott Summers and Professor Xavier, the latter placing him in his school for the gifted.
The other super-hero groups named above are all from the DC Comics universe.

This question was created by pollucci19 who still claims that Bobby Drake should have been christened "Cold Duck".
8. In the late 19th century, the iceman was a common site in cities with his horse drawn cart delivering huge blocks of ice in the days before refrigeration. Where did the iceman get the ice?

Answer: Frozen rivers or ponds

When rivers and lakes froze over with approximately a foot of ice, great cubes of ice approximately 1 foot cubed were cut from the ice and stored in ice-houses, which were essentially insulated warehouses (ice was usually insulated with sawdust). Each day an iceman would ride his cart around a regular route delivering a great block of ice to households' iceboxes.

This question was cold-compressed by team member 1nn1 who always seems to be skating on thin ice.
9. Eugene O'Neill's play "The Iceman Cometh" was based on the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969.

Answer: False

"The Iceman Cometh" was actually written decades earlier in 1939 and was not performed publicly until 1946. It takes place in 1912 and tells the story of a group of dead-end drunks, 12 men and three prostitutes, who live in Harry Hope's Greenwich Village saloon and rooming house. A revival of the play in 2018 starred Denzel Washington.

The 1974 true crime book "Helter Skelter" by Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecutor in the case, tells the story of the Tate-LaBianca murders.

This true crime question was prosecuted by Phoenix Rising member tazman6619.
10. Which Scottish professional snooker player made winning such a habit he was nicknamed "The Ice Man" because of his ability to remain cool under pressure?

Answer: Stephen Hendry

The debate as to whether Hendry or Ronnie O'Sullivan is the greatest snooker player of all time is a hotly contested one and this quiz won't endeavour to resolve the issue. The statistics, whilst they don't paint the whole picture, currently point toward Hendry. In time, that too could change. The strongest pointer toward Hendry being the greatest is that he won seven World Snooker Championships, the pinnacle in the sport, whereas O'Sullivan has won five to this point.

Hendry would win his first World Championship in 1990, at the time a mere twenty-one-year-old. It made him the youngest to win the title at that point in time. Additionally, he has won six Masters titles and five UK Championships. He successfully completed eighteen Triple Crown events during his career.

"Steady" Eddie Charlton is an Australian snooker player, Alex "Hurricane" Higgins is from Northern Ireland and Cliff "The Grinder" Thorburn is Canadian.

This question was potted by Phoenix Rising's pollucci19 with nerves of ice.
