Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On December 26, 1996, the little body of JonBenet Ramsey was found in the basement of her home. She was discovered by her father, who went to search for his daughter. In what city and state did this murder take place?

Answer: Boulder Colorado

On Christmas Day, JonBenet, her brother, and her parents went to a friends house for Christmas dinner. On the way back JonBenet fell asleep in the family car. Her father carried her upstairs, and placed her in her bed. When Patsy, her mother, awoke at 5:00 A.M., she noticed a letter on the kitchen stairway.

The note said that JonBenet was being held for ransom. Patsy immediately yelled for John, her husband, and together they called the police. When the police arrived, a search began in earnest for the little girl. Hours later, JonBenet's little body was discovered in the basement of the family home by her father.

She had been strangled. Who could have done such a horrible thing to an innocent little girl?
2. On Christmas Eve, John Ramsey received a bonus. Coincidentally, the day JonBenet was found, her mother discovered a ransom note. According to the police, the letter and John's bonus were for the same amount. What was the amount of the ransom and the bonus?

Answer: $118,000

The Boulder City Police were suspicious from the start. Especially when they discovered that John's bonus and the ransom note were for the exact same amount of money. However, in most criminal investigations, there are bound to be some errors. In this case however, there were major mistakes right from the start. If the police had started the investigation properly, would the killer or killers have been caught right away?
3. Did the police properly search the residence for clues as to how JonBenet was murdered?

Answer: No

Upon the arrival of the Boulder City Police, one would have expected the Ramsey house to be sealed off. This was not the case. The police never sealed off the house, thus letting friends, family, and neighbors walk right into a crime scene. They took no means to collect or protect any forensic evidence.

The scope of the mistakes were quite apparent. However, by that afternoon, upon searching the house again, with John Ramsey, Detective Fleet wanted to know if Ramsey had seen anything unusual. Ramsey did not think that anything was out of the ordinary in the house.

However, while searching, John Ramsey came upon a door at the other end of the basement, and much to his horror when he opened the door, the only thing he saw was a white blanket. After only seeing the white blanket, he told Detective Fleet, that he had found JonBenet.
4. On December 27, 1996, a newspaper quoted a district attorney as saying 'It was very unusual for a kidnap victim's body to be found at home - it's not adding up'. What is the name of the newspaper?

Answer: Rocky Mountain News

Charlie Brennan, Rocky Mountain News Reporter, wrote the story about the murder. According to Brennan, the police had strong suspicions that the Ramseys were the ones responsible for the murder of their daughter. One day later on December 28, 1996, Brennan had made it perfectly clear to his readers that the Ramseys were the main suspects for the murder.

Although the police refused to comment, reporters started to cite their own evidence as fact.
5. According to the newspapers, what vital piece of evidence did they think the police overlooked?

Answer: Footprints in the snow.

The Rocky Mountain News and various other newspapers reported what they felt was a valid piece of evidence, missing footprints in the snow. The reason for this is that, although there was snow all around the Ramsey house, there was in fact no snow around the base of the house, such as near doors or ground windows.

As noted in the police reports, there was no reason for someone to have to break into the Ramsey home. The house was not secured, either by locked doors or windows. In fact, in the room that JonBenet was found in, there was indeed a broken window.
6. After the burial of their daughter on New Years Eve 1996, the Ramseys again fell under even more suspicion. This time their lack of emotion came under scrutiny. The Ramseys gave an interview a few days later on 'CNN'. Mrs. Ramsey was quoted as saying, 'There is a killer on the loose, I don't know who it is, I don't know if it's a he or a she - but if I were a resident of Boulder I would tell my friends to keep their babies close to you'. The very next day, the Mayor Of Boulder was quoted as saying, 'People in Boulder have no need to fear that there is someone wandering the streets of Boulder, as has been portrayed by some people, looking for young children to attack. Boulder is safe, it's always been a safe community and it continues to be a safe community'. What is the name of the Mayor?

Answer: Leslie Durgan

Needless to say, the Ramseys were outraged. They couldn't understand why someone such as the Mayor would say things like this publicly when it was obvious to them that their daughter's killer was still out there. They were yet to realize that the Mayor's comments were the opinions of the police and the general public who truly thought that the Ramseys were responsible for the death of their daughter. During an interview given by Mayor Durgan in 1997, she clearly stated that the reason for her response to Mrs. Ramsey's message to her friends, family, and neighbors was to 'stop the fear in the neighborhood that someone was out there to murder young children in the night'.

When the interviewer asked Mayor Durgan where she received her information she stated, 'The Police Chief'.
7. As the Ramseys entered 1997 without their daughter, an FBI Criminal Profiler began to put together information about the killer or killers of the little girl. What is the name of the FBI Profiler?

Answer: Robert Ressler

Now a former FBI agent, Ressler believes that JonBenet knew her killer. The killer could have come from a small circle of friends around the Ramsey home in Boulder. The circle would include family, neighbors, and employees of the Ramseys. Ressler based is findings on a resignation letter from Detective Lou Smit that was sent to District Attorney Alex Hunter.

This is part of the letter to the District Attorney: 'The case tells me that there is substantial, credible, evidence of an intruder and lack of evidence that the parents are involved'. Did this mean that the police were now going to start looking for the real killer or killers?
8. On October 13, 1999, a Grand Jury was called together to hear the case of JonBenet. District Attorney, Alex Hunter, called a press conference to announce that after thirteen months of testimony, the Grand Jury finally had a verdict. What was the verdict?

Answer: Insufficient evidence to charge any suspect with the murder.

Although there was DNA evidence that proved that someone had indeed killed JonBenet, the Grand Jury had come back with a verdict that there was insufficient evidence to charge any suspect with the murder. Three weeks after this announcement, the Governor of Colorado declared that John Ramsey was still considered a prime suspect.

In response to the Governor's declaration, the Ramseys threatened legal action if he continued to malign them.
9. On May 25, 1999, a tabloid newspaper made headlines by saying that JonBenet's brother, Burke, had murdered her, and that their parents were covering for Burke. What was the name of the tabloid?

Answer: The Star

When The Star reported that Burke had killed his sister, the Ramseys immediately threatened to sue the newspaper. A court order made The Star print a retraction on behalf of Burke.
10. In February 2000, John Ramsey admitted to being on a prescription drug during the time of his daughter's death. The drug, if not taken daily, could lead to paranoia. What is the name of the drug?

Answer: Prozac

John Ramsey was taking the anti-depressant drug known as Prozac. He was taking the drug around the time of his daughter's death. If a person who is under a doctor's care for depression and paranoia, like John Ramsey was, fails to take the drug for a few days, their depression and paranoia could come back with a vengeance.
11. In February 2000, a private therapist told the police that she had information about the murder. She told the police that a client of hers had been treated for ten years because of a trauma resulting from sexual abuse. What is the name of this therapist?

Answer: Mary Bienkowski

Mary Bienkowski told police that her client, whom she refused to name, was involved in the murder of JonBenet. She said her client was a woman who had been treated for ten years because of a trauma resulting from sexual abuse when she was a child. She said that her client told her that JonBenet was murdered in a sex-ring operation.

The police later dismissed Bienkowski, saying that she has been known to give false statements.
12. In March of 2000, retired detective, Lou Smit, said he found evidence of an intruder, an intruder that murdered JonBenet. He said that part of the evidence was found outside the Ramsey home. What was this piece of evidence?

Answer: Baseball bat

Smit said that the evidence included: 1. A metal baseball bat found outside the Ramseys' Boulder home. Fibers on the bat matched a carpet found in the basement near the storage room, where JonBenet's body was found. The bat was found in a place where kids normally wouldn't play. 2. DNA evidence that indicates JonBenet's attacker was a male, but the DNA does not match John Ramsey, and 3. Peanut-shaped foam packing material and leaves found in the basement that Smit thinks might have been tracked inside by someone entering through a broken basement window.

It would have been something that would not have been blown in there. This information is directly from www.crimelibrary.com.
13. In 2000, John and Patsy Ramsey gave an interview on national television, all the while promoting Smit's theory of an intruder. On what national television show did the Ramseys give this interview?

Answer: 20-20

During their interview, the Ramseys said that the police should look at their friends. They said that it is possible that one of their friends was a pedophile. John and Patsy said that it was possible that this friend of theirs had waited for hours in the Ramsey home to attack and murder JonBenet.
14. In Steve Thomas' book 'JonBenet: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation', Donald Foster, a linguistics scholar concluded that the ransom note was without a doubt written by Patsy Ramsey. What letter of the alphabet was the highlight of this piece of evidence?

Answer: A

According to Donald Foster, Patsy's use of the letter 'a' prior to the murder, matched perfectly with the ransom note. However, after the murder, Patsy changed her handwriting, and so the letter 'a' looked different. Also, the ransom note was signed 'S.B.T.C.', and Patsy's use of acronyms had been observed on Christmas cards she sent out that same year.

Another piece of damaging evidence was that the paper that the ransom note was written on matched perfectly to Patsy's stationary, as did the pen that wrote the ransom note.
15. In April 1998, a famous psychic began to have visions of the murder of JonBenet. With her help, the Ramseys were able to have a sketch drawn of the man who supposedly murdered their daughter. What is the name of this famous psychic?

Answer: Dorothy Allison

Dorothy Allison, who passed away on December 3, 1999, began to have visions of the day JonBenet was murdered. Since then, the sketch that Dorothy helped them to make had been placed on the Ramseys web site.
