Answer: Jack the Ripper

In 1888, Jack the Ripper killed Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly. Their murders were known as the "Canonical Five" as it is thought they were linked and are generally reckoned as Ripper victims. The Ripper is thought to have committed other murders, but it has never been proven.

Although there have been many suggestions as to the identity of Jack the Ripper, including Walter Sickert the artist and Prince Albert the grandson of Queen Victoria, it remains unsolved.
2. English film director William Desmond Taylor was found murdered in his Hollywood bungalow on 2 February 1922. Which famous silent film actress with an alliterative name was a murder suspect?

Answer: Mary Miles Minter

Mary Miles Minter (1902-1984) was in love with Taylor and passionate love letters written by her were found in Taylor's bungalow. Although Mary was in love with Taylor, it is thought that he wanted to be more like a father figure. Mary was considered a suspect for a while but was never formally charged with murder. As for who killed William Desmond Taylor, it remains unsolved.
3. Between December 1968 and October 1969 residents of Northern California were terrorised by a killer who was nicknamed what?

Answer: Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer murdered five people and injured two more. It could be that he killer murdered between 20 to 28. The name "Zodiac" was provided by the murderer in a series of letters and cryptograms he sent to the press. Several people have been suspected of being the Zodiac Killer, but it remains unsolved.
4. JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in the basement of her home in Colorado on December 25, 1996. Which of these people were suspected of killing her?

Answer: All of them

John and Patsy (JonBenét's parents) and brother Burke were all suspected of having murdered her. JonBenét was a frequent bed wetter and this was one of the reasons why Patsy was suspected. She lost her temper at having to clean her daughter once again. John Ramsey was considered a suspect as he knew exactly where to find JonBenét, and despite being told otherwise, covered her with a blanket, picked her up and carried her upstairs.

This led to vital physical evidence being destroyed. Burke was suspected of hitting JonBenét over the head with a flashlight as she had stolen a piece of pineapple (later found in her stomach) from Burke's fruit tray.

The three were not exonerated until 2008, 12 years after the murder, and it remains unsolved.
5. Nicknamed "The Black Dahlia", what was the name of the woman found murdered in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947?

Answer: Elizabeth Short

Elizabeth Short, later known as "The Black Dahlia" was found mutilated with her body cut in half. She was an aspiring actress, but at the time of her murder she hadn't received any work. There were over 150 people suspected of killing Elizabeth, but no one was arrested, and it remains unsolved.

The bodies of Marianne and Christine, both 15, were found on Wanda Beach on January 11, 1965. The girls had taken their brothers and sisters to the beach for the day, but it was closed because it was a very windy day. The girls left their siblings and went for a walk along the beach and were never seen alive again. Although there were suspects, it remains unsolved.
7. Jill Dando was shot and killed outside her London home in 1999. What was her occupation at the time of her death?

Answer: BBC Presenter of Crimewatch

Jill Dando was the BBC Presenter of the television show Crimewatch and she was BBC Personality of the Year in 1997. Because of her occupation there was great speculation over the reason for her murder. Barry George was arrested and convicted of the crime, but was acquitted on appeal. Who murdered Jill Dando? It remains unsolved.
8. In 1986 this man was officially pardoned for murdering Mary Phagan in 1913. Who was this man?

Answer: Leo Frank

Leo Frank was convicted of murdering Mary Phagan who was 13 at the time. He was the Jewish supervisor of the pencil factory where she worked. Frank was implicated by another employee and suspect, Jim Conley. Frank insisted that Conley's story had been fabricated.

However, he was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to be hanged. Governor John Stanton had doubts that Frank was guilty of the murder based on the evidence, and had Frank's sentence commuted to life imprisonment. The public were outraged and swore revenge.

The "Knights of Mary Phagan" a group of prominent men, planned to kidnap Leo Frank and deliver the punishment he deserved. Frank was abducted from prison in 1915 and lynched the next day. It took two attempts to obtain a posthumous pardon for Frank and it was finally granted in 1986.

As for who was the real killer of Mary Phagan, it remains unsolved.

The crimes occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana. Many of the victims were killed with their own axe. The axeman was never identified, although there were suspects. It was thought that the crimes were ethnically motivated as most of the victims were Italian or of Italian descent, and it is not known why these crimes were committed, it remains unsolved.
10. Although he is thought to have been murdered, it remains unsolved as to what happened to this person. Who disappeared in 1975?

Answer: Jimmy Hoffa

Jimmy Hoffa an American labor union leader, disappeared and was probably murdered on July 30, 1975. He was president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He became involved in organised crime very early on with the teamsters and this continued until his disappearance.

The Kennedy's, especially Robert, became heavily involved in implicating Hoffa on criminal charges and his team of investigators and prosecutors were allegedly known as the "Get Hoffa" squad. On July 30, 1975 Hoffa disappeared from the parking lot of the Red Fox restaurant in Detroit.

It is not known what happened to him after this. Was he murdered? It remains unsolved.
