Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The word "left" itself has ominous origins. It comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "lyft" meaning what?

Answer: Weak

Even being "ambidextrous" isn't truly descriptive. The Latin word for "right" is "dexter," the root word in "dexterity." Adding "ambi" doesn't change it to "even handed," it's literally "being right-handed on both sides."
2. When is "International Left Handers' Day"?

Answer: August 13

Left Handers Day was started on August 13, 1992 by the "Left Handers' Club" in the UK. It's now a world-wide celebration.
3. Can you pick the one president from the list who was NOT left-handed?

Answer: George W. Bush

Some say George W. Bush had more things to worry about than being right-handed. Five of the previous seven presidents had been a southpaw or ambidextrous.
4. An astonishing 25% of the Apollo program astronauts were left-handed. Which of the three on the first trip to land on the moon was NOT left-handed?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, was the only member of Apollo 11 who wasn't left-handed. Mike Collins stayed in the command module and played with switches - using his left hand, of course!
5. Which former president, assassinated in 1881, was reputed to be able to simultaneously write Greek with his left hand and Latin with his right?

Answer: James Garfield

James Garfield knew Latin and Greek, and would occasionally display his skill in writing both at the same time, using two hands. He was the last of the seven presidents born in log cabins, and was the middle president of three in 1881: Rutherford B. Hayes, James Garfield, and Chester A. Arthur.
6. Bill Gates, one of the richest men in the world, founded Microsoft and is left-handed. Who was his "right hand man" when he started Microsoft?

Answer: Paul Allen

Paul Allen and Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1975. Bill is worth about $76B; this doesn't include the $28B he and his wife, Melinda, have donated to charitable projects.
7. Who was the obvious southpaw in the Beatles?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has toured nearly every year since 2002 and had a 39-stop tour scheduled for 2016, at the age of 74. Ringo was born a 'lefty', but he was forced to use his right hand as a child; he is almost exclusively right handed.
8. Well known for her singing and wearing a "meat dress," which entertainer is left- handed?

Answer: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga wore a meat dress to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. While it got a lot of attention, it drew divided opinions. Understandably, the dress invoked the fury of animal rights organizations and activists worldwide.
9. One of the most electrifying musicians in the 60s was known for playing left-handed. Which guitarist is this?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

While it's true that Jimi played a right hand guitar turned upside down, he did string it for a left-handed player. And wow, did he play it!
10. A very famous person in the spotlight in Spring, 2016 is a southpaw. Who is this Olympic medalist who has undergone a major transformation?

Answer: Caitlyn Jenner

Bruce Jenner won the Olympic decathlon with a world record score in 1976. He was an instant hero and had a career in film, writing and television, and fathered several children. He allowed the world to keep track as he underwent operations and psychiatric examinations in the process of becoming Caitlyn Jenner in his mid-60s.
