Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We are recognised as the first people to successfully climb to the summit of Mount Everest in 1953. Who are we?

Answer: Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay

After their historic climb, Hillary was knighted by the queen. The Hillary Step, a steep wall of ice and rock just before the summit is named after Hillary. In 2003, Hillary's son Peter and Norgay's grandson Tashi met on the summit in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Everest being climbed.
2. We are the native people of Nepal. Usually, we work as porters on Everest, and we are known for being strong, hardy and good-natured. Often, we summit Everest without any supplementary oxygen! What is our name?

Answer: The Sherpa

Sherpas have played a very important role in Everest's history. One of the first two people on the top of Everest, in 1953, was Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa. They have many towns around the base of Everest, and because they grow up at such a high altitude, many of them never need to use oxygen tanks to climb Everest, and they can still carry all kinds of gear!
3. My name is Junko Tabei, and I was the first woman to summit Mount Everest. What nationality am I?

Answer: Japanese

She accomplished this on May 16, 1975, via the South Col route, and she is also the first woman to have climbed the highest peaks in all seven continents.
4. My name is Kushang Sherpa, and when I accomplished my "first", I was an instructor at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. What is my first?

Answer: First person to climb all four sides of Everest.

Kushang ran away from home when he was 14 to work as a porter on Everest. He was illiterate, so he had to climb for a living.
5. My name is Reinhold Messner, the famous mountaineer. I was the first person to make a true solo climb of Everest, in 1980. What route did I take?

Answer: North

Messner was also the first person to summit Everest without oxygen. He did this with Peter Hebeler on May 8, 1978. Not only this, but he was also the first person to climb all fourteen of the world's peaks over 8,000m.
6. My name is Krzysztof Wielicki. I was the first person to summit Everest in the winter. What nationality am I?

Answer: Polish

This was, in fact, the first winter ascent of ANY peak over 8000 meters. He did this on February 17, 1980 with another man, Leszek Cichy.
7. My name is Erik Weihenmayer, and I'm from Denver, Colorado. I was the first person with a certain disability to climb Everest. What is my disability?

Answer: I'm blind.

Erik accomplished this remarkable feat on May 25, 2001 at the age of 32. He went blind when he was 13.
8. My name is Roche Bertrand, aka "Zebulon." I hold two "firsts" for my favourite way of descending the mountain. What is that way?

Answer: Paragliding

His first record was set in 1990, when he paraglided from the summit with his father Jean Noel Bertrand. They were the first father and son pair to summit Everest, and Roche was only seventeen, making him the youngest person to summit Everest at that time.

His second record was when he paraglided with his wife, Claire Bernier, in 2001. They reached Base Camp in eight minutes, and became the first husband and wife pair to fly from Everest!
9. My name is Flight Lieutenant D.F. McIntyre, and I was the first person to fly over Everest. In what year did I do this?

Answer: 1933

In that year, 1933, it was rare for aircraft to fly much over 10,000 feet, yet Everest is 29,035 feet! The plane he used was a biplane, a Westland PV.3 Bomber powered by a supercharged Bristol Pegasus engine. He took off from Purnea, India (150 miles south of Everest) on the April 3 and approached the Himalayas, where he was almost defeated by vicious winds.

The mission was successful, however, and he took many pictures that really helped to map Everest.
10. Our names are Davo Karnicar and Marco Siffredi. We made the first ski descent and the first snowboard descent, respectively. In what years did we do this?

Answer: 2000 and 2001

There had been attempts to ski and snowboard down Everest before, but they weren't successful. Davo Karnicar is from Slovenia and made his descent on October 7 and Marco Siffredi was from France and made his descent on September 9. In 2002, however, Marco vanished on Everest after summitting a second time.
