A firkin is a small wooden barrel while a tierce is slightly larger wooden cask. Both are made by a cooper like Mortimer. This is a skilled profession that takes many years to learn. Much of the cooper's work is done on a shaving horse, a type of wooden bench with a foot operated clamp to hold and shape the barrel wood. Any cooper would need an auger, which is basically a hand operated drill, with a long drill bit, that is used to make the necessary holes in a barrel.
