Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous Long Islander grew up in Massapequa and had a sitcom with his name in the title.

Answer: Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry Seinfeld and his wife bought Billy Joel's old house in the Hamptons. They also live in New York City.
2. This 'difficult' diva often talks about her painful childhood in Huntington and Northport. She graduated from Harborfields High School. She gave a concert at her old middle school that was televised on the FOX network.

Answer: Mariah Carey

Mariah was often picked on because of her bi-racial background (unfortunately intolerance exists everywhere). She has developed a reputation for being quite nasty, even to her fans.
3. This serial killer was from East Meadow. He killed prostitutes and often stuffed their body parts in oil drums (yuck!). Many of the dead women's personal possessions were found in his bedroom. His mother and sister who lived with him had no idea what was going on. What is this killer's name?

Answer: Joel Rifkin

Rifkin was quiet, shy and unpopular with the ladies. These seem to be common traits with other serial killers. My brother-in-law actually worked with him and ate lunch with him from time-to-time....no comment there!
4. This Modern abstract-expressionist artist lived and painted in his home and studio in the Hamptons. He died in a car crash near his home in 1956.

Answer: Jackson Pollock

Many of Pollock's paintings hang in MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York City. They are large canvases that look like paint was dripped all over them (and sometimes he did just that). I love his work, each time you see it it looks just a little bit different.
5. This 20th Century president had a home in Oyster Bay. He and his family spent summers there while he was president and lived there full time when his terms were over.

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Teddy's home is now a National landmark. If you're ever on Long Island, take the time to visit his home. You won't be disappointed.
6. What was the name of the second baseman from Kings Park who spent 20 years with the Houston Astros?

Answer: Craig Biggio

Biggio was the catcher. They moved him to second base to protect him physically and hopefully prolong his career.
7. This author of 'The Great Gatsby', based the fictional towns of East Egg and West Egg on Long Island's Great Neck and Sands Point.

Answer: F. Scott Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald wrote 'The Great Gatsby' while he was living in Great Neck.
8. This poet and writer of 'Leaves of Grass' has a mall named after him.

Answer: Walt Whitman

I don't know if it's an honor to have a mall named after you, but Whitman was an extraordinary man. He was also a teacher on Long Island as well as a nurse during the Civil War.
9. Okay, a house isn't really a celebrity, but where was the 'horrible' house that spawned a novel, one decent movie and many poor sequels.

Answer: Amityville

The rumors about the Amityville 'Horror House' started after Ronald DeFeo murdered his entire family in the house. The next family that moved in claimed it was haunted. The latest owners have changed the house so it is no longer recognizable to movie-goers. Those famous half windows are long gone.
10. This famous basketball player who was on the Nets and the 76er's grew up in Roosevelt.

Answer: Dr. J.

Erving was the lead scorer in the ABA three times. He was the NBA MVP in 1980. Sadly, Erving's son was found dead near his family's home in Orlando.
