Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Georgia Totto O'Keefe was born on November 15, 1887. Where?

Answer: Sun Prairie, Wisconsin

She has been quoted as saying that she disliked Sun Prairie, but her family moved to Virginia when she was fifteen.
2. Georgia studied at the Art Institute of Chicago but after only one year she had to withdraw as she contracted a serious illness. Which of these was it?

Answer: Typhoid fever

After recovering, she went on to study at the Art Student League in New York City, but did not stay for very long, and she went on to study at a range of colleges across the United States.
3. Georgia married a well known pioneering photographer. Who was it?

Answer: Alfred Stieglitz

Stieglitz had an immense influence on the development of photography, and single-handedly introduced America to the works of Picasso, Matisse and Cezanne. Also edited and published his own, highly respected magazine, "Camera Works".
4. Georgia's husband founded and ran which gallery in New York City?

Answer: 291 Gallery

PS 122 is a performance art/visual art space, WOW Cafe is a women-specific performance/visual art space, and the Factory was the location of Andy Warhol and his art world cohorts.
5. Alfred was obsessed with photographing Georgia since the day their relationship began; roughly how many portrait photos did he take of her from 1918 to 1937?

Answer: 300

Alfred took many eroticized portraits of Georgia, including nudes which he took in the deserts of New Mexico.
6. Alfred was married to another woman while living with Georgia throughout the first six years of their relationship.

Answer: True

Stieglitz's wife divorced him in 1924, and he tried to push Georgia into marriage. Eventually, she relented in December of that year.
7. When were Georgia's first giant flower paintings exhibited?

Answer: 1925

A Calla Lily painting would sell for $25,000 in 1928, which grounded her in the art community as a successful and talented artist; sadly, the prices made and the extent of sales indicate whether an artist is 'fashionable' and is/was 'successful' or 'talented.'
8. What artist contributed a 'place setting' honoring Georgia O'Keeffe in a 'Dinner Party' piece?

Answer: Judy Chicago

Georgia was, in fact, not pleased with this place setting at all. She resented having her work reduced to certain imagery, and while Chicago's piece is fascinating, Georgia would have preferred to be left out of it.
9. What is the name of the famous ranch that Georgia visited and eventually bought in New Mexico?

Answer: Ghost Ranch

The ranch is located in a remote area approximately 120 miles north of Albuquerque. Guests at the ranch included D.H. Lawrence, Charles and Anna Lindbergh, and Ansel Adams. Georgia purchased the house where she had been staying at Ghost Ranch in 1940, along with the view of the flat-topped mesa in the Jemez range, called the Pedernal.
10. When did Georgia O'Keeffe die?

Answer: March 6, 1986

She died at the age of 98. In accordance with her instructions, she was cremated the next day. Juan Hamilton walked to the top of the Pedernal Mountain and scattered her ashes to the wind - over her beloved "faraway".
