Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A stylist would never cut hair using which of these implements?

Answer: Pinking Shears

Pinking shears are for cutting fabric only. All cutting implements used in styling must be precise and extremely sharp and should be sterilised between use on each client. Most stylists are very protective of their cutting tools.
2. If a client with blonde hair wishes to colour her hair dark, the stylist must pre-pigmentate her hair first. What colour would be used to pre-pigmentate?

Answer: Red

Using green, brown or gold would, most likely, turn your Clients hair yellow or khaki green. This is usually when your client would contemplate contacting a lawyer!
3. Before colouring a client's hair, the stylist should do what?

Answer: All of these

The most important aspect of colouring is giving your client the result they desire. If certain products have been used on the hair previously, such as compound hennas or products containing metallic salts, the hair could break or even dissolve! Some people are allergic to certain products so a skin test should be administered prior to any colour service.
4. If you're not sure how to describe the cut you want, what should you do?

Answer: Bring a picture of the desired style

Sometimes you have a clear mental picture of what you want but there is no guarantee that the stylist will have the same mental picture. The best way to achieve this is to bring a picture of what you want along with you.
5. I think I may have head lice. Should I go to my stylist for them to check?

Answer: No

The last thing any stylist needs is to be exposed to lice. If a client comes in with lice, the salon has to be closed, everything has to be sterilised and all the staff treated as a prophylactic measure. If you suspect lice, see a clinic sister or nurse.
6. You'd like your hair straight and sleek. What tool would the stylist use to achieve this?

Answer: Straightening Irons

One of the best things that ever happened in the hairdressing industry was the invention of ceramic straightening irons. They smooth and straighten the hair beautifully. It is very important that a protective agent of some kind is used on the hair first as most irons are between 190 to 220 degrees celsius.
7. I think I may have dry scalp or dandruff. What should I do?

Answer: Consult a stylist or medical practitioner to diagnose

You could have dandruff, dry scalp, seborrhea or eczema, all of which need different treatments. It is very important that your condition be correctly diagnosed as some of the treatments may aggravate the condition if used incorrectly.
8. You would like to have your hair in an "upstyle" or "updo" for your wedding. Should you have a trial run before the big day?

Answer: Yes

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and can be ruined by a bad hairstyle, after all, you'll be looking at those pictures for years to come. It is vitally important that you have a trial run at least two weeks before the wedding to be certain you like the style and that it will last the entire day.
9. I just need a little trim, is it okay for me to just snip the ends a little bit? The stylist will never notice.

Answer: No

Oh yes, they will! The cut is usually the most important aspect of any style and therefore should be left to a professional. It is very difficult to fix a cut that has had some "help" from the client.
10. My mother told me to brush my hair 100 times before I go to bed at night. Is this a good idea?

Answer: No

This is an old wives tale. Brushing your hair that much is more likely to create split ends and a greasy scalp.

I hope you've enjoyed my quiz and you've found it somewhat informative, thanks for playing.
