Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1930 William Kogut was on death row in San Quentin. Rather than wait for the State to kill him, he decided to kill himself. What did he use?

Answer: Playing cards

William tore up several packs of playing cards into pieces, which, utilising various items from his cell he packed into a pipe bomb. He then held the bomb against his head so that when it exploded the pieces of pipe were forced into his skull killing him.
2. In 1979 Robert Williams was working at Ford Motor Co. when he became the first person that we know of to be killed by what?

Answer: A robot

Whilst working at a casting plant in Michigan, Robert was struck in the head by the arm of a one ton robot and was instantly killed. His is not the only recorded death by robot. Kenji Urada was carrying out maintenance on a robot in a Japanese factory. Unfortunately he had not shut it down properly and it activated, pushing him into a grinding machine.
3. In February 1994 British MP Stephen Milligan was found dead at his home. What caused his demise?

Answer: Auto eroticism

Conservative MP Stephen Milligan was found by his cleaner, laying on his kitchen table naked except for stockings and suspenders, with a bin bag on his head, electric flex round his neck and with a segment of an orange in his mouth. An inquest concluded that he had been engaged in erotic autoasphyxiation which had gone too far. Suggestions of murder staged in such a way as to ruin his reputation were firmly ruled out.
4. Actor Vic Morrow died while filming "The Twilight Zone". What was the cause of his death?

Answer: Decapitated by a helicopter blade

Vic Morrow was filming a scene where he is rescuing two children and taking them to a helicopter. The helicopter was very low and a special effects explosion caused the pilot to loose control. As the helicopter crashed one of the blades decapitated both Morrow and one of the children he was carrying. The second child was crushed to death under the crashed aircraft.
5. Tailor Franz Reichelt fell to his death from the Eiffel Tower while testing what invention?

Answer: Coat Parachute

In 1911 Franz Reichelt invented a coat that he felt sure would also double as a parachute. So convinced was he that his invention would work that he decided to test it from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Instead of using a dummy he wore the coat himself. Unfortunately it did not live up to his expectations and he fell to his death.
6. In 1982 David Grundman and his friend were having a little fun with a shotgun by shooting at cactus plants, but something went wrong. What killed him?

Answer: Cactus plant

The first cactus the men shot was fine. It was quite a small one and disintegrated in a very satisfying manner, so they turned their attention to something larger, in fact something very big. Mr Grundman blasted a big chunk out of the cactus, but instead of disintegrating it fell on him and crushed him to death.
7. In 1911 Bobby Leach was the second person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive. What eventually killed him?

Answer: Slipped on some orange peel

After surviving Niagara Falls and other death defying stunts Bobby Leach went for a walk in his home town, slipped and fell on some orange peel on the pavement, and broke his leg so badly it had to be amputated. Complications set in and he died of these a short time later.
8. In July 1974 Christine Chubbuck became the first newsreader to do what live on television?

Answer: Commit Suicide

About 8 minutes into the broadcast the newsreader, who was suffering from depression at the time, announced that the audience were about to see a television first. She was certainly correct in that statement as she then drew a gun and shot herself in the head.
9. In 1991 Lori Rae Matthews drove to California to see an outside art installation that had become a massive tourist attraction. On that trip something killed her. What was it?

Answer: Giant umbrella

The art installation was by Christo and consisted of giant white yellow and blue umbrellas. Each one was about twenty feet high, twenty eight feet across and weighed around five hundred pounds. They became a huge attraction with thousands of people coming to see them.

The day Lori Rae Matthews chose to visit was windy and one umbrella was uprooted by a gust of wind and blew into her, crushing her against a boulder and killing her. Christo ordered them to be taken down immediately, but they were to claim another life in Japan when a crane operator installing them touched a high voltage wire with the crane arm and was electrocuted.
10. In 2006 Mariesa Weber was reported missing by her family. After two weeks searching her body was found in the family home. Where was she?

Answer: Wedged behind a bookcase

For two weeks Mariesa Weber's family frantically searched for her before her body was found wedged behind a bookcase in her bedroom. She had been in the habit of plugging in the TV by standing on a bureau next to the bookcase and leaning over the top.

The best suggestion anyone could come up with was that she overbalanced and fell headfirst behind the bookcase. At only five foot three inches tall and weighing only one hundred pounds she would have found it impossible to extricate herself. It is thought that the fall must have killed her instantly as no-one in her family heard any screams or cries for help.
