Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what 1966 film does Richard Widmark wear a patch over his left eye? (The star of "An American in Paris" knows.)

Answer: Alvarez Kelly

"Alvarez Kelly" stars William Holden as Kelly, a cattleman who is to deliver a herd to the Union Army in Virginia. The herd and Kelly are captured by Confederate raiders led by Colonel Tom Rossiter (Widmark) who want to take the beef to besieged Richmond. (Gene Kelly starred in the 1951 film "An American in Paris.")
2. Which famous artist cut off part of his own left ear?

Answer: Vincent Van Gogh

On December 23, 1888, Van Gogh cut off the lower half of his left ear with a razor while in Arles. He supposedly gave it to a prostitute at a nearby brothel. He later painted "Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear." Over a dozen theories exist regarding why Van Gogh did that, all of which center on his depressed mental state.
3. Which pirate in "Peter Pan" had his left hand replaced by a hook?

Answer: James Hook

James Hook is the Captain of the brig "Jolly Roger." His only fears are the sight of his own blood and the crocodile who has relentlessly pursued him since eating the hand that Peter Pan cut off. Smee is Hook's Bo'sun. Teach is the real name of the pirate Blackbeard. I invented Horatio Hook.
4. On July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong put his left foot on the surface of the moon. Which Apollo mission was he on?

Answer: Apollo 11

Apollo 11 made the first manned landing on the moon. Debarking from "The Eagle," Armstrong said, "That's one small step for [a] man; one giant leap for mankind." After Armstrong, "Buzz" Aldrin became the second person to step onto the moon's surface. Apollo 10 was a practice flight for a lunar landing.

The lunar module was flown manned around the moon, but did not land. Apollo 12 did land and the astronauts performed two surface visits. Apollo 13 was aborted after an oxygen tank explosion and the astronauts barely made it back to planet Earth.
5. Which famous aviator wore an eye patch over his left eye? (Will Rogers knows.)

Answer: Wiley Post

Wiley Post was the first pilot to fly solo around the world. On August 15, 1935, he and Will Rogers were both killed when Post's plane crashed on takeoff from a lagoon near Point Barrow, Alaska. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1935, Amelia Earhart, pilot, and Fred Noonan, navigator, disappeared without a trace over the central Pacific Ocean while attempting a flight around the world.

Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin (1889-1977) was a comic actor and film maker whose career began in silent films and spanned over 75 years. Primarily known for his persona "The Tramp," he is generally considered one of the major figures in the movie industry. Such films as "The Gold Rush," "City Lights," "Modern Times," and "The Great Dictator" are often included on any list of the all-time top films. (Oona O'Neill, Eugene O'Neill's daughter, was Chaplin's fourth wife from 1943 until his death in 1977.)
8. The title character in "Dr. Strangelove" used his crippled right hand to make the Nazi salute. What actor played Dr. Strangelove (and several other parts) in the film? (Inspector Clouseau knows.)

In the movie Sellers not only played Dr. Strangelove, nuclear war expert and former Nazi, but also Merkin Muffley, President of the United States, and Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, a British RAF officer. The other three actors also appeared in the film: Scott played General Buck Turgidson; Wynn was Colonel Bat Guano; and Pickens was Major T.J. "King" Kong, B-52 commander and pilot. (Sellers played Inspector Clouseau in the series of "Pink Panther" films.)
9. The pirate Long John Silver is missing his left leg and uses a crutch. In what book does he first appear?

Answer: Treasure Island

Long John Silver, who once served under the notorious Captain Flint, is the most interesting and complex character in "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. "Privates Latitudes" is an adventure novel by Michael Crichton about piracy in the Caribbean in the 17th century, published posthumously in 2009. "Flint and Silver" is a prequel to "Treasure Island." Written by John Drake and published in 2010, it answers such questions as why the treasure was buried, how Silver lost his leg, and from where Silver's parrot Captain Flint came.
