Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of Henry VIII's other wives was a close relation to Katherine Howard?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Katherine's father, Edmund Howard, was the brother of Anne's mother, Elizabeth Howard. Therefore, Anne and Katherine were first cousins.
2. In May 1540, Katherine was given quilted sarcanets that were paid for by Henry VIII. How many of these did she receive?

Answer: 23

Sarcanet (or sarcenet) is a fine silk used for linings. Previously, on April 24, Katherine had been granted land titles that had been confiscated from a felon. At the time of these gifts, Henry had not yet had his marriage to Anne of Cleves declared invalid.
3. In 1540, what date were Katherine and Henry VIII married?

Answer: July 28

The wedding took place at Oatlands Palace in Surrey, on a Wednesday. This was the same day that Thomas Cromwell was executed. In her wedding vows, Katherine promised to be buxom and bonair in bed. Both bonair and buxom meant yielding or complaisant.
4. Katherine received a necklace from Henry VIII in January 1541. What precious gems were in it?

Answer: diamonds, rubies, pearls

The necklace had 6 diamonds, 5 rubies, and pearls in between. Also that month, Henry gave her an item of clothes with 8 diamonds and 7 rubies.
5. What was the title of the book dedicated to "... Lady Quene Katheryne" in 1540?

Answer: The Byrthe of Mankind

This book was written by Richard Jonas. It was a work on obstetrics and midwifery. By 1545, the dedication had been taken out.
6. Fill in the blank. Katherine's motto was "No other _______ but his".

Answer: wish

Her motto, "Non autre volonte que la sienne" can be translated as both "No other wish but his" and "No other will but his". Regardless of which translation you favour, she unfortunately did not live by her motto, and thus came to a tragic end.
7. Henry VIII is said to have called Katherine his "blushing rose without a thorn". What badge did she choose that reflected this phrase?

Answer: crowned rose

The rose on her badge was red and white with a gold centre. The crown was gold and red.
8. In her letter to Thomas Culpeper, Katherine used what phrase above her signature?

Answer: Yours as long as life endures

This letter is the only one of Katherine's to survive. It is filled with misspellings, which was common for women of that day. Katherine was literate, but uneducated. In the letter, she wrote, "I wode you war wythe me now that you mouthe se wat pane I take yn wryteg to you" (I would you were with me now that you might see what pain I take in writing to you).
9. Who was Katherine accused of having a precontract with?

Answer: Francis Dereham

Francis Dereham was in Katherine's step-grandmother's household (where Katherine lived for a time). He is very likely the first person she had full sexual intercourse with; they called each other "wife" and "husband".
10. Which of these women gave evidence against Katherine by saying she saw Katherine look lovingly out of a window at Thomas Culpeper?

Answer: Margyt Morton

Katherine Tylney's evidence was even more damaging. She revealed that Katherine met with Thomas two nights in a row, and stayed with him until 2 o'clock in the morning. Jane Viscountess Rochford said she was in the room with Thomas and Katherine, but she didn't know what they were doing. Jane was married to Anne Boleyn's brother, George, and is the one who gave evidence against Anne and George, saying they had an incestuous relationship.
11. What date in 1541 was Francis Dereham disembowelled and castrated while conscious (for treason)?

Answer: December 10

Thomas Culpeper was also executed, but for intent to commit treason. Because of his higher rank, and Henry VIII's possible fondness for him, he was beheaded rather than disembowelled, etc.
12. Katherine was sent to Syon to be imprisoned. What materials were her kirtles allowed to be made from?

Answer: satin, damask, velvet

She was not imprisoned in cells, but got a few rooms to live in. She was not allowed pearls or precious gems on her kirtles (basically the skirt part of a dress), and her jewels were confiscated before she left for Syon. She was allowed 6 French hoods, but not the ones that were decorated with gems.
13. Where was Katherine transferred to on February 10, 1542?

Answer: Tower of London

She was given the Queen's Apartments in the Tower. Many of her family members were in the Tower at the time. Their crime was misprision of treason (knowing that someone else was going to commit treason).
14. What day of the week was Katherine beheaded on?

Answer: Monday

It took place on February 13, 1542. She was executed in the same place and on the same block as her cousin, Anne Boleyn. Jane Viscountess Rochford was beheaded right after, for her part in the relationship between Thomas Culpeper and Katherine.
15. Where was Katherine's body interred?

Answer: Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula

Katherine was laid to rest with her cousin, Anne Boleyn. Henry VIII's other wives were interred at St George's Chapel, Windsor (Jane Seymour); chapel at Sudeley (Katherine Parr); Westminster Abbey (Anne of Cleves); and Peterborough Cathedral (Catherine of Aragon). Henry himself was put with Jane Seymour, the only wife to give him a living son.
