Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On June 23, 1993, Lorena Bobbit committed an act that would make her infamous around the world: she cut off her husband's penis. In court testimony, what did she allege was the main cause of the wounding incident inflicted on John Wayne Bobbit?

Answer: John Wayne had raped her

In court testimony, Lorena Bobbit, an Ecuadorian native, told police that she had been suffering from years of abuse at John Wayne Bobbit's hands. She alleged that John Wayne stumbled home on June 23, 1993 in a drunken stupor and raped her. Later that night, as she was having a drink of water, she was mesmerized by a large knife in her kitchen.

In a haze, she claimed that she held the knife and "memories of past abuse raced through her head". She stated she was inexplicably drawn to hurt him in kind. (truTV website, 2008)
2. Once Lorena realized the enormity of her actions, what did she do with her husband's severed body part?

Answer: She threw it into a field, out of her moving car

Lorena fled the scene of the assault, with her husband's severed body part in tow. As horror over her actions sank in, she panicked and tossed her husband's penis out of her car window into a nearby field.
3. Was John Wayne Bobbit's 'member' ever retrieved?

Answer: Yes

Lorena Bobbit called the police soon after the amputation incident, and informed them where they could find John's penis. The police collected his organ, packed it in ice, and were able to produce it to John's surgeon. He underwent a nine-hour operation, but was able to leave with his member reattached. (NationMaster Website, 2008)
4. During her malicious wounding trial, Lorena shed light on many other marital incidents that led to the bizarre act of castrating her husband. Lorena accused John Wayne of all of the following EXCEPT:

Answer: pedophilia

The Bobbits' marriage was by no means a happy one. During the trial, Lorena revealed a less than ideal background story: she married John Wayne on the cusp of an expiring visa. Shortly after the vows were spoken, Lorena began to see cracks in John Wayne's hitherto kind persona.

He allegedly began to physically abuse her, often by choking and kicking her. Additionally, he was constantly getting drunk. The police had to intervene in their domestic problems on multiple occasions. Lorena also claimed that John taunted her about his other women, raped her, and forced her to have an abortion. (law.jrank.org)
5. When John Wayne Bobbit testified against Lorena, what did he allege was the real reason behind her assault?

Answer: He was too tired to have sex with her.

Under oath, John Wayne Bobbit refuted allegations of raping his wife. He told jurors that she wanted to have sex with him on the night of the attack, and was enraged because he was too tired to comply with her demands.
6. Lorena's attorneys utilized temporary insanity as her defense. More specifically, they proclaimed that her maiming of John Wayne Bobbit was an "irresistible impulse" after years of vicious abuse. Lorena claimed that she had no recollection of the alleged crime and that she was suffering from brief reactive psychosis. How did the jury of seven women and five men react to Lorena's battered woman/temporary insanity defense?

Answer: They found her not guilty

The jury deliberated for half a day, and finally reached a conclusion: "Lorena Bobbitt was temporarily insane when she cut off her husband's penis". The jury members later explained that testimony from the couple's acquaintances was entirely too convincing. Even John Wayne's friends admitted to the court that he enjoyed abusing and dominating Lorena. John Wayne himself was a poor witness and contradicted his own statements. Lorena served 45 days in a psychiatric hospital.(law.jrank.org)
7. John Wayne Bobbit also had to stand trial for malicious assault against his wife. The jury found him guilty of all charges.

Answer: False

John Wayne Bobbit was acquitted of the charges against him. Due to a lack of empirical evidence, the jury could not conclude that John Wayne had indeed assaulted his wife, prior to his castration at her hands. Incidentally, John Wayne was never charged with rape.

In 1993, the state of Virginia did not recognize rape between a cohabiting, married couple, unless there was proof of severe injuries. (law.jrank.org)
8. What happened to John Wayne and Lorena's relationship after the trial?

Answer: They divorced

Once a woman cuts off her husband's organ, it is a safe guess that the couple's problems far exceed what is salvageable. Lorena and John Wayne formally divorced in 1995, after the end of both trials.
9. Four years after taking the law into her own hands, Lorena appeared in the news once again in 1997. What was she accused of doing?

Answer: Attacking her mother

In 1997, Lorena was charged by the police with physically attacking her mother. The details of the alleged crime are unclear, and she was found not guilty. After the event, she and her mother continued to live together for a short period of time. ("Seattle Post-Intelligencer", December 8, 1997).
10. John Wayne Bobbit also landed himself in the news after the trials ended. Which of the following did NOT contribute to his headline status?

Answer: He attempted to kill Lorena

John Wayne Bobbit led quite an eventful life after the trial. He dabbled in many occupations, including making movies. He starred in the adult film "John Wayne Bobbitt: Uncut", among others. He also continued to be in conflict with the law and was arrested for many alleged crimes, including domestic violence and grand larceny.
