Answer: Everyone else is taken.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish poet and playwright who was noted for his wit. He was born in Dublin, Ireland to successful Ango-Irish intellectuals. He is best remembered for his plays, his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and for his criminal conviction for "gross indecency".
2. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "Some cause happiness wherever they go ..."

Answer: Others, whenever they go.

After graduating from Oxford, Wilde returned to his home in Dublin. Wilde was disappointed when his childhood sweetheart, Florence Balcombe married Bram Stoker of "Dracula" fame.

With money inherited from his father, Wilde set himself up as a bachelor in London and began writing poetry and plays.
4. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "Cats are put on earth to remind us ... "

Answer: That not everything has a purpose.

Apparently Oscar Wilde was not a cat lover.
5. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "I don't want to go to heaven ..."

Answer: None of my friends are there.

There was never anything modest about Oscar Wilde. He made a year-long lecturing tour in America in 1882. It is said that when he stepped off the boat and the customs agent asked if he had anything to declare, his reply was "Nothing but my genius".
6. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "A pessimist is somebody who ... "

Answer: complains about the noise when opportunity knocks.

In the Oscar Wilde play "The Importance of Being Earnest", some who are not familiar with the play confuse the word "Earnest" with "Ernest", which gives a different impression of what the play is about. Actually, the plot concerns a pillar of the community, Jack Worthing, who pretends to have a brother, Ernest, who engages in all sorts of debauchery. Jack is always running off to supposedly bail his brother out of trouble once again.

In fact, Ernest is just the alter ego of Jack, who uses these occasions to engage in behavior which would definitely not be approved of by proper Victorian society.
7. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: 'It's not whether you win or lose ..."

Answer: It's how you place the blame.

In 1891, Wilde became acquainted and infatuated with Lord Alfred Douglas, the son of the Marquess of Queensberry, the man who created the modern rules of boxing. Alfred introduced Wilde to the Victorian underground of gay prostitution, which was later to lead to Wilde's downfall. The Marquess called on Wilde and told him to stay away from his son or he would thrash him.
8. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "Everybody who is incapable of learning ... "

Answer: Has taken to teaching.

In 1895, the Marquess of Queensbury left a calling card at Wilde's club and wrote on the back "For Oscar Wilde, posing sodomite". Against the advice of his friends, Wilde sued the Marquess for libel. Unfortunately for Wilde, the Marquess was able to line up several witnesses to prove that Wilde was, indeed, guilty of sodomy and in a subsequent trial Wilde was sentenced to two years' hard labor.
9. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "Anyone who lives within his means ..."

Answer: Suffers from a lack of imagination.

Wilde was released from prison in 1897, but the harshness and diet of prison had taken its toll. He spent the last three years of his life impoverished and in exile in a seaside village in Northern France.
10. Finish the Oscar Wilde quote: "A good friend will always ...

Answer: Stab you in the front.

It is said that as Oscar lay dying of meningitis, abandoned by his friends, his last words were "This wallpaper is hideous. Either it goes or I do". The wallpaper won.
