Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christopher Hampton: "Asking a working writer what he thinks about critics is like asking ____."

Answer: a lamppost how it feels about dogs

At least the lamppost gets a warm feeling ... at first.

Christopher Hampton was a British playwright, screenwriter and film director. He won two Tony Awards, and was best known for the play 'Dangerous Liaisons.'
2. Welsh poet and writer Dylan Thomas said, "Someone's boring me. ____" (Hint: Dylan had a way with words, but this day he apparently had a self-confidence problem.)

Answer: I think it's me.

Dylan Thomas was a poet, born in Swansea, Wales. He was noted for his ingenious use of words and imagery, and lived a life marked by alcoholism which ended prematurely at the age of 39.
"Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Not boring at all, Dylan!
3. Scott Adams: " 'Wrong' is one of those concepts that depends on ___."

Answer: witnesses

If a bear errs while alone in the woods, was it barely an err?

Scott Adams is a satirist and the creator of the Dilbert comic strip.
4. In 1823 the German author Heinrich Heine wrote: "Where they begin by burning ____ they end up burning human beings".

Answer: books

This remark in his play "Almansor" (1823), set in Granada c. 1500, a few year after the final expulsion of the Muslims and Jews from Spain, has been famous as a remarkable prophecy.
5. Douglas Adams said: "You live and learn. At any rate, ___."

Answer: you live

Learning requires short term memory.

Douglas Adams is the author of 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.'
("You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young." "Why, what did she tell you?" "I don't know, I didn't listen." (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
6. Comedian Paula Poundstone said: "The wages of sin is death, but by the time taxes are taken out, it's ____."

Answer: just sort of a tired feeling

And then, fatigued, sinning just isn't as fun?

Paula Poundstone is an American stand-up comedian and author.
7. A quote that was often attributed to author Mark Twain but most probably was originated by Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, Attorney General of the United States: "I didn't attend the funeral, but ___."

Answer: I sent a nice letter saying that I approved of it

Hoar would not have wished him dead, but who's to argue with results?

The quote referred to the funeral of a prominent abolitionist and orator Wendell Phillips. "The Boston Post" in 1895 reported the quote and gave the understated note that "The Hon. E. R. Hoar did not love Phillips..."
8. Rodney Dangerfield, comedian, said, "I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. He said I was being ridiculous - ____."

Answer: everyone hasn't met me yet

But there's hope that Rodney's statement will be true in the future! And then
there will be a psych session to write home about!

Rodney Dangerfield was an American stand-up comedian with the famous tag
line "I don't get no respect." We lost him in 2004, unfortunately.
9. Groucho Marx: "I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. ___"

Answer: But this wasn't it.

And then he said "I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception."

Julius Henry Marx, called Groucho, was born in New York and gave us many years
of brilliance. He hosted the radio and TV show 'You Bet Your Life.' An interesting note is that his most famous "cigar" quote that supposedly got him fired from a radio show, never happened. "I never said it," said Groucho in 1972. I will let you find the quote on your own - this is a wholesome quiz.
10. And lastly, upon being told the cost of an operation, Oscar Wilde said , "I suppose that ___"

Answer: I shall have to die beyond my means.

And he means, dying is mean by all means.

Oscar Wilde was a famous author and wit. Did he indeed die during the operation? I think not, because his last words were purportedly uttered as he lay penniless in a French hotel, in 1900. He looked around at the room and said, "My wallpaper and I are in a battle to the death, one or the other must go."
