Both of their children died in early childhood. Which of these presidents and their wives lost one of their children after a difficult birth and another child to typhoid fever while he was a lawyer in Ohio?

Answer: William and Ida McKinley

This biography is rather sad. William and Ida McKinley lost both of their children while William was a lawyer in Ohio. Their youngest, Ida, died four months after a very difficult birth. Her mother became super protective of their surviving child Katie, but Katie died of typhoid fever at the age of three. Grief stricken, Ida McKinley felt God was punishing her and developed epilepsy which affected her for most of her later life.

The McKinleys did not get to enjoy long term parenthood but they were not failures.

They became the First Family when William McKinley was elected as the 25th president of the United States. He led the United States to victory in the Spanish-American war and his presidency focused on expansion and prosperity. He was assassinated in office on September 14, 1901 and was succeeded by Theodore Roosevelt.

Which of these women was unable to have children due to an auto bus collision, which she later sketched and it became one of her well known artworks called "The Accident"?

Answer: Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was riding the bus when it collided with a trolley car. She received several injuries, one of which was from an iron bar that went through her abdomen and uterus, permanently injuring her reproductive organs. Her husband, Diego Rivera, had met her when she was a young artist and encouraged her to pursue being an artist as a career. They married and through her artwork she became a very famous woman.

6. On the outside, you may never have guessed this man had struggles. He was a successful poet, playwright, and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948. His works include "Murder in the Cathedral", "Hollow Men", and "The Waste Land". Which of these men did not have children, largely in part to the poor health and mental instability of his first wife?

Answer: T. S. Eliot

T. S Eliot's first wife Vivienne suffered from poor health and was not stable mentally. Vivienne had many physical problems which included irregular periods. This often led to violent mood swings, fainting, and migraines. She often embarrassed her husband in public because of her illnesses. Eliot became more separated from her as she was sent away by doctors for periods of time in hopes it would improve her health.

In their later married life, Eliot tried to hide his wife from his reputation. She was eventually committed to a mental hospital, where she died.
7. Rosa Parks, the United States' civil rights activist also known as the "Mother of the Civil Rights Movement", never had any children with her husband Raymond Parks.

Answer: True

Rosa Parks and her husband Raymond never had any children. Although she was childless, with the support of her husband, she accomplished many things that were discouraged among African Americans and women during the time. She finished her high school education, and after three times fighting against the discrimination laws she became a registered voter.

She and her husband worked together to change the society that they lived in by being civil rights activists.
8. Kings and queens had their difficulties with children too! Which of these royal couples did NOT divorce, remarry, or separate because they could not have their own children?

Answer: Charles IV of France and Marie of Luxembourg

Marie of Luxembourg had a miscarriage after her first attempt to have a child, but a year later she became pregnant again. Unfortunately a carriage accident sent her into labor and she gave birth to their son prematurely. She and the baby both died. As for the other couples, Josephine had two children previous to their marriage but was divorced by Napoleon for not producing their own child as a couple. Mary I of England and Philip II of Spain separated after her "phantom pregnancy".

It is believed one of the causes of her death could have been uterine cancer. Baldwin I was one of the leaders of the First Crusade in Jerusalem and became King of Jerusalem in December 1100.

He saw little need of his wife Arda, who had no money and had given him no children.

He tried to divorce her, claiming she had been raped by pirates. Eventually he forced her into a monastery and married another wife, but they also had no children.
9. This particular queen was extraordinarily unlucky. Most of her pregnancies ended in stillborn children or miscarriages and the surviving children all died in childhood. Which of these queens had eighteen pregnancies and died without being able to have one of her own children as an heir?

Queen Anne had more than her share of tragedies. Out of her eighteen pregnancies, Anne only had six living children. Three of those six died within twenty four hours of being born. Later her two living daughters died of smallpox within a few hours of each other.

Her longest living child, William died when he was eleven of fever and pneumonia. She tried to have children up until the age of 34. Despite the tragedies of not having her own children, Anne had a very happy marriage. Anne's husband Prince George of Denmark was very loving and supportive of her, which is rare in many of the cases where royal families could not have children.

When he died, Anne mourned the loss greatly.
10. Tragedy even affects the families of some of the strongest and bravest people in history. What was the name of Julius Caesar's daughter who had a miscarriage and later died trying to have another child?

Answer: Julia

After her husband had a skirmish with rioters that spattered blood on his clothes, Julia saw a servant carrying the blood stained robe in the house and thought her husband had been murdered. Her husband was fine, but Julia went into labor and had a miscarriage that permanently damaged her.

A year later she died while trying to give birth to another child, which did not survive. Julius Caesar is thought to have been in Britain when he found out. Later when Julius Caesar was murdered a cremation pyre was set up next to Julia's grave, but Julius ended up being cremated in the Roman Forum.
