Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which queen consort said of her son when on her deathbed "At least I shall have the comfort in having my eyes eternally closed - I shall never see that monster again"?

Answer: Caroline of Anspach

Caroline of Anspach was the wife of George II. Neither she nor her husband could bear the sight of their eldest son Frederick. George II said of his son - "Our first born is the greatest ass, the greatest liar... and the greatest beast in the whole world and we wish he was out of it"!
2. Which queen fell out with her sister and brother-in-law over her choice in friends?

Answer: Anne

Mary II and her husband William III disapproved of Anne's friend Sarah Churchill, believing that Sarah had too much influence over her. When Anne became queen Sarah wielded immense influence and eventually they clashed over political appointments to the Cabinet and Sarah was dismissed. Sarah was replaced in the queen's affections by Abigail Hill, one of Sarah's poor relations.
3. Which king said on discovering that his youngest son had betrayed him - "Enough, now let things go as they may, I care no more for myself or the world" and died shortly after?

Answer: Henry II

Throughout his reign Henry had defeated rebellions from his three elder sons - Henry, Geoffrey and Richard (later Richard I).
A final rebellion led by Richard and Philip of France in 1189 saw Henry totally defeated. He was apparently shown the list of those involved in the rebellion and was devastated to see the name of his youngest and favourite son John (later King John). He died two days later.
4. Which king, on discovering his wife's infidelity, imprisoned her in a castle for the rest of her life?

Answer: George I

His wife was Sophia Dorothea and she was imprisoned for over 30 years. A popular rumour is that George I hacked Sophia's lover to death and buried the pieces of his body under her room although no corpse has ever been found.
5. Which future king's mother said of him - "Handsome I cannot think him with that painfully small and narrow head, those immense features and total want of a chin"?

Answer: Edward VII

His mother was Queen Victoria. Both she and her husband Prince Albert seemed to have little love for their eldest son. When Albert died of typhoid shortly after Bertie had had a relationship with an actress, Victoria blamed the ensuing scandal for her husband's death. Nothing and no one could convince her otherwise!
6. Which king threw his oldest son and daughter-in-law out of St. James's Palace but kept the grandchildren with him?

Answer: George I

George I had always had a poor relationship with his eldest son, who never forgave him for imprisoning his mother for the rest of her life.Their political differences led to George I to throw him out of the family home whilst retaining guardianship of his grandchildren. George II and his wife set up a rival court at Leicester House.
7. Which king said of his children - "My father was scared of his father, I was scared of my father and I'm damned well going to see that they're scared of me"?

Answer: George V

The children in question were Edward VIII and George VI. George V was a strict father and forced the left handed George VI to write with his right hand. George VI was also made to have his legs in splints to straighten his knock knees!
8. Which king ordered that his brother be drowned in a butt of malmsey wine?

Answer: Edward IV

The brother was George Duke of Clarence. He was charged with treason in 1478 and is rumoured to have chosen his own method of execution!
9. Which king was usurped by his cousin and reportedly starved to death?

Answer: Richard II

The cousin, Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV),had been exiled by Richard II in 1398 for supporting a rebellion. Henry's father, John of Gaunt, died the following year and Richard seized the family estate and stripped Henry of the hereditary title. Henry then mounted an attack whilst Richard was in Ireland and was victorious. Richard was arrested and died in 1400.

It is not known whether Henry deliberately starved his cousin or Richard starved himself to death.
10. Which king's father said of him - "The boy will ruin himself within a twelvemonth of my death"?

Answer: Edward VIII

Another quote from George V. He was right about his son though, within a year Edward VIII had abdicated the throne and married the now infamous Mrs. Simpson. It has also emerge that he was a Nazi sympathizer during WWII.
