Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Richard II reigned from 1377 to 1399. One of the following statements is true of this king, but which one?

Answer: he abdicated

Richard was forced to abdicate in favour of Henry IV in 1399, and died the next year. It is believed that he was murdered.
2. Since William the Conqueror, how many generally listed reigning monarchs never married?

Answer: 4

They were: William II, Edward V, Edward VI and Elizabeth I.
3. The present Queen is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror, and through his kinship to Edward the Confessor (on which he based his claim to the English throne) to the House of Wessex as well. Which of the following names was NOT a King of England from the time of the House of Wessex?

Answer: Henry

Egbert was the first ruler of *all* the English kingdoms from 830AD, and between then and 1066, there were a total of 22 Kings. The oldest royal name in Britain is Edward, as Edward was King in 899, and the present Queen's fourth child is called Edward. (NB, Edward I reigned from 1272 to 1307)
4. Which King was known as 'Lackland'?

Answer: John

John was the youngest son, and as was the custom of the time, the wealth was divided according to rank and birth. John came away with very little and the general populace taunted him with the nickname 'Lackland'. William II was known as Rufus because of his red hair, and Henry I was nicknamed Beauclerc because he was bookish.
5. We all know that Henry VIII married six times, but do you know how many times King John married?

Answer: twice

His first wife was Isabel (married 1189, annulled 1199). He next married Isabella of Angouleme in 1200 when she was twelve years old. They had two sons and some daughters before John died after 16 years of marriage; Isabella lived another 30 years.
6. Who wrote Edward VIII's abdication speech?

Answer: Walter Monckton

Edward abdicated in favour of his brother, the Duke of York, in December 1936. That year saw three monarchs; their father, George V, then Edward VIII, then George VI (our present Queen's father). Walter Monckton was Edward VIII's friend and lawyer.
7. Which Queen Consort married both an English King and a French King?

Answer: Eleanor of Aquitaine

Eleanor was the divorced wife of Louis VII when she married Henry II. She and Henry had five sons and three daughters. Berengaria married Richard I (the Lionheart), Anne married Richard II and Catherine married Charles II.
8. Queen Victoria had more children than any other reigning Queen (as opposed to a Queen Consort), but which King could claim the same as reigning King (legitimate children, that is!)?

Answer: George III

Edward III had eight sons and five daughters, William I had four sons and five daughters and Henry VII had three sons and four daughters, but George III and Charlotte surpassed them all with their FIFTEEN children! There is some dispute about the number of legitimate children born to Edward I - some sources say eighteen and others say fourteen, so I am sticking with George III with his undisputed fifteen. (Victoria had nine children.)
9. What is the connection between Princess Anne and Ian Ball?

Answer: Ian tried to kidnap her

Ian Ball tried to kidnap Princess Anne in 1974 in the Mall (the wide, straight road directly in front of Buckingham Palace).
10. William IV was the third son of George III and as such never thought he would be King. The law stated that he could not marry without the Monarch's consent, so established himself in a household with his common-law wife and their ten children. What was his partner's name?

Answer: Dorothea

William married Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818; all the Royal Dukes rushed to marry because Charlotte was the only one of the next generation and it seemed the House of Hanover could end with their generation if more children were not produced with some urgency.

His next brother, Edward, also married, and it was from Edward we get Victoria, and directly from her most of the crowned heads of Europe including Queen Elizabeth II.
11. Queen Victoria was the first Monarch to live in Buckingham Palace, but she did not buy it. Which previous King did?

Answer: George III

George bought Buckingham House for his wife (it was called the 'Queen's House') in 1761 but it was not until Victoria became Queen in 1837 that it was used as a palace. In the years since it was bought from the Duke of Buckingham, the building has had more than a million pounds spent on the fabric alone.
12. Which was the last British King to lead troops into battle?

Answer: George II

This was in 1743 at Dettingen; the battle was won. Shortly afterwards the Duke of Cumberland (George II's second son) won the battle at Culloden in Scotland. (Handel composed the 'Dettingen Te Deum' to celebrate George II's victory).
13. In the past, when referring to children of a reigning sovereign, what was the difference between a 'heir apparent' and a 'heir presumptive' (of which there is only one at a time)?

Answer: one was male, the other female

This distinction between male and female heir no longer applies and the terms are now of purely historical interest.
14. What was the common link between all the Kings who were called Richard?

Answer: they each died violently

Only Richard III had a child (a son) the other two died childless. Richard I's Queen, Berengaria, never actually came to England. Richard II married twice, but had no children. All the kings called Richard, however, died a violent death.
15. While some monarchs became Kings and Queens at an early age (Mary Queen of Scots was a Queen virtually from her birth), some had to wait a long time. Which was the eldest 'new' monarch on the British throne?

Answer: William IV

William IV was 64 when his brother died, and his greatest wish was to live long enough to see his niece reach the age of 18 so his hated sister-in-law would not become regent. His wish was granted. Victoria became Queen in 1837, when she was 18.
