Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As an adult Scout leader, you need to complete various training topics. One of the most important is YPT, done online at least every two years. What is "YPT"?

Answer: Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training covers the various BSA policies and procedures to keep kids safe and to keep adults out of situations where they could be unfairly accused of wrongdoing. YPT has to be completed before being accepted as a Scout leader and periodically thereafter in order to remain as one.
2. You may start out as a Tiger Adult Partner when your son is six years old. What BSA program includes ranks such as Tiger, Wolf, Bear and WEBELOS?

Answer: Cub Scouts

Cub Scouts are for boys in six to 11 years old, in First to Fifth grades. Adults work very closely with their Scouts, but as the Cub Scout gets older he works more with his adult leaders and fellow Scouts and less with his parents.
3. What title, from Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book", do Cub Scouts use to mean "leader" - such as their parents, older Scouts or their adult Scout leaders?

Answer: Akela

In "The Jungle Book", Akela is the leader of the pack of gray wolves. Cub Scouting borrows many themes from "The Jungle Book", including having the boys formed into Dens by age, and all of the Dens making up the Pack.
4. When a Cub Scout completes his second year as a WEBELOS, he has completed Cub Scouting and is ready to move on to Boy Scouting. What is the ceremony called when the boy moves from the Cub Scout Pack to the Boy Scout Troop?

Answer: Crossover

Crossover is usually held in Spring of the boy's last year of Cub Scouting. He says good-bye to the organization, uniform and world of the Cub Scout and is accepted by a Boy Scout Troop of boys aged 11-18.
5. After you've been a BSA adult leader for a few years, you may want to take what is billed as the premier Scout adult leader leadership training. At this course, you'll "work your ticket" and, hopefully, within 18 months will earn your "beads". What is the name of this course?

Answer: Wood Badge

Wood Badge is taught over two 3-day weekends, with the trainees learning various leadership and management techniques to improve their Scout unit and their overall abilities. When they complete their "ticket" of five projects, they earn the distinctive neckerchief and beads that mark them as Wood Badgers.
6. Your older Boy Scouts or Venturers may want to complete a fun & challenging trek at one of the four BSA High Adventure Bases. These are: The Summit in WV, Northern Tier in MN, Sea Base in FL and which other, in NM?

Answer: Philmont

Philmont Scout Reservation covers 137,500 acres near Cimarron, NM. Philmont hosts treks in the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains and conducts many training courses each year for Scouts and Scout leaders.
7. Scouts and adult leaders that distinguish themselves may be nominated for membership in Scouting's "honor society", the Order of the Arrow (OA). Who elects Scouting youth to the Order of the Arrow?

Answer: Members of their unit, who may not be OA members.

One of the unique features of the OA is that non-members appoint the members. A Scout becomes eligible to join OA by meeting certain requirements (achieved First Class rank, camped a minimum amount of nights, etc.), but they must first receive a majority of votes from their Troop, most of whom won't be OA members.
8. What BSA program is for youth aged 13-21 and includes both young men and young women?

Answer: Venturing

Venturing is for high school and college-aged young men and women. Carrying on the progression from Cub Scouts through Boy Scouts, Venture Crews are to be entirely run by the youth members, with adults acting only as Advisors.
9. As your child ages out of Scouting, you may want to continue in roles beyond the local unit level. What is the next organizational level up from the local BSA unit (Pack, Troop, Crew, Team or Post)?

Answer: District

Districts directly serve the BSA units in their area, providing training, assistance, advice, etc. to Scouts and adults running the individual units. Districts are sub-divisions of Councils; National BSA is made up of 282 Councils.
10. Are the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) part of the same organization as the Boy Scouts of America (BSA)?

Answer: No

Despite the similarities in organization, methods and goals, GSUSA and BSA are completely separate organizations. The only co-educational units are the BSA's Venturing Crews and Exploring Posts
